OPERATION
5.1. CHECKING THE BELT TIMING
5.1.1. Remove the auxiliary drive belt, crankshaft pulley and timing belt
cover.
NOTE: on some variants the drive belt will have to be cut off, all
auxiliary belts will have to be replaced regardless of variant. The timing
cover will require replacement as these cannot be reused.
Rotate the Crankshaft in the normal direction of rotation until the mark on
the Crankshaft Gear and the two marks on the Intermediate Gear are aligned.
(fig.1)
NOTE: A number of rotations of the Crankshaft may be required to achieve
this position as the marks align every 14th full revolution.
5.1.2. Locate VS5285.01 Crankshaft Setting Tool into the recessed profile of
the Crankshaft Sprocket, ensuring that the 3 teeth are fully located in the
profile of the sprocket and that the flat area of the tool is located against
the guide sleeve that protrudes from the engine. (fig.2)
5.1.3. Insert the two VS5285.02 Camshaft Setting Pins through the holes
located at the 12 o’clock position in the Camshaft Sprockets and into the
apertures of the Cylinder Head (fig.3).
5.1.4. If it is not possible to fully install the Camshaft Setting Pins, the
engine timing position may need to be adjusted.
5.1.5. This kit also includes a third pin which can be used as a Tensioner
Retaining Pin (Fig.4).
5.1.6. To retain the tensioner for timing belt removal and installation, use
an 8mm Hex Key to rotate the belt tensioner in a clockwise direction to
release the belt.
5.1.7. Retain the Tensioner in this position using the one remaining Setting
Pin (Fig.4).
5.1.8. Remove and discard the Toothed Belt and Toothed Belt Tensioner.
5.2. INSTALLATION
5.2.1. Ensure the engine is in its timed position using the Camshaft Setting
Pins and the Crankshaft Alignment Tool .
5.2.2. Fit a new timing belt tensioner and tighten the securing bolt to 25 Nm.
5.2.3. Fit the new timing belt in a clockwise direction starting at the
intermediate sprocket.
5.2.4. Remove all tooling and reassemble in the reverse order of dismantling.
NOTE: always reassemble using a new crankshaft pulley bolt.
