Part 4 TECHNICAL REFERENCE

1. NEW TECHNOLOGY

(1) Highly weather-resistant ink is available (color ink only). BCI-16 Color (highly weather-resistant ink) takes the place of BCI-15 Color.

Canon PIXMA IP90 Inkjet Printer User Manual - Highly weather-resistant ink
is available

Note: BCI-16 Color is NOT compatible with BCI-15 Color. Although BCI-16 Color and BCI-15 Color are mechanically and electrically same, the color conversion process of the printer driver is different. Use of BCI-15 Color on the PIXMA iP90 / PIXUS iP90 (or BCI-16 Color on the i80 / PIXUS 80i) is not allowed to avoid undesirable effects on printouts. However, use of BCI-15 Color on the PIXMA iP90 / PIXUS iP90 (or BCI-16 Color on the i80 / PIXUS 80i) does not cause any mechanical damages to the printer.

(2) An ink saving function has been added. In the Maintenance tab of the printer driver, by selecting the following two modes, an ink saving function can be set. This function becomes effective only when the media type is plain paper. In the default setting, the two modes are not set. The setting of two modes does not change until a user command the printer to do so.

Save Black Ink mode:
Black-print duty is reduced to save black ink consumption. In this mode, black printing is faint in some degree.

Use Composite Black mode:
The black color can be available by using color ink even when black ink is used up. In this mode, black becomes slightly greenish. With this mode enabled, the message which makes users recognize that print quality may deteriorate, due to the setting of Use Composite Black mode, is displayed on the screen every time a print job is operated.

(3) The following functions have been added to the Print Beam function. a. AU pictographic symbols (Japan only) b. QR codes (Japan only) c. Reprinting function: By pressing the Resume/Cancel button, printing is preformed again. (Image data only)

(4) Printing on plain paper is supported in PictBridge print mode. When printing on plain paper, borderless printing is not possible. (Even though borderless print is selected, a margin appears.)

(5) In Setup Utility, PictBridge print mode setting is available.

(6) The ink absorber has a 20% longer life. Approx. 20% longer life than that of the i80 / PIXUS 80i with the modification to the purging operation sequence, although the ink absorber is the same as one in the i70 / PIXUS 50i and i80 / PIXUS 80i.

(7) The wait time of the print head before capping is reduced. The period of time before the print head starts to move to the capping position from the home position becomes 11 seconds. In conventional models, it was 55 seconds.

Reason:
To prevent removal of the power cord while the print head is at home position (meaning,
the print head is not capped). The users may feel uncomfortable with an unforeseen frequent movements of the print head (the print head scan sequence*1 before capping). Thus, possible claims are expected.

*1: An action which the print head makes two round trips, from the right to the left, to eject ink mist: This function was newly introduced with the i80 / PIXUS 80i. Available when; Cleaning, Replacement of the print head and ink tanks, and Turning off the power.

2. CLEANING MODE AND AMOUNT OF INK PURGED

Print head cleaning is performed before a start of printing, except in the following cases:
– Cleaning on arrival:
Performed when the print head cover is closed.
– Cleaning by dot count:
Performed after ejecting paper.
– Manual cleaning / deep cleaning: Performed manually.

Canon PIXMA IP90 Inkjet Printer User Manual - CLEANING MODE AND AMOUNT OF
INK PURGED

1: The appropriate interval between the last cleaning and the next is separately maintained for Black and Color with the timer. For this reason, the cleaning mode may differ in Black and Color.
2: When 24 to 504 hours have elapsed since the previous Black cleaning, timer cleaning – 0 is performed. However, this cleaning is conducted only 5 times after printer installation, and no further timer cleaning – 0 (Black) will be performed.
