CONNECTING THE GAS CYLINDER

Fire and explosion hazard

WARNING:
Never connect new or not-empty gas cylinders if there are ignition sources in the immediate vicinity. Do not smoke.

The gas connection is located in the base cabinet on the left side, below the burners.

The following parts are included. They comply with the applicable standard of the country in which the gas grill is supplied:

  • Gas hose (pre-assembled): CE-approved hose line of sufficient length (maximum 1.5 m) that allows kink-free installation.
  • Pressure regulator (pre-assembled on the gas hose): Permanently adjusted and CE-approved pressure regulator under DIN EN 16129 and DIN EN 16436-1, max. 1.5 kg/h, operating pressure 50 mbar, suitable for the gas cylinder used.
  1. Place the gas cylinder in the trolley.
  2. Screw the coupling nut of the hose onto the fitting on the pressure regulator and tighten the connection with a spanner.
  3. Screw the coupling nut on the pressure regulator onto the screw connection on the gas cylinder. Tighten the coupling nut with your hand. To prevent damage to the seal, don’t use tools.

PERMITTED GAS CYLINDER SIZES
Gas cylinder sizes that may be operated and stored on the grill base within the cylinder compartment are:

  • 5 kg (height 420 mm, diameter 200 mm)
  • 8 kg (height 505 mm, diameter 229 mm)
  • 11 kg (height 600 mm, diameter 300 mm)

Do not use composite plastic gas cylinders in the grill as they are too tall. Feed the gas hose through the opening in the side panel. Connect the gas cylinder outside the grill to the gas hose.

Fire and explosion hazard due to damage to the gas hose.

WARNING:
When placing the gas hose, ensure that the following requirements are met:

  • The gas hose does not touch any hot surfaces.
  • The gas hose does not run along sharp edges and corners.
  • No hot grease can drip onto the gas hose.
  • The gas hose is not twisted or kinked at any point.

LEAK TEST

  • Use a commercially available leak detection spray or paint brush and soapy water to check all connections (mixing ratio of soap to water: 1:3).
  • Open the gas cylinder valve. Bubbles will appear on all leaking points.BURNHARD-EARL-4-Burner-Gas-Grill-with-Back-Burner-fig- \(24\)
  • Close the valve again.
  • Tighten the nuts on both sides by hand again and repeat the leak test. If you still notice bubbles, close the gas valve and consult a specialist dealer.

Repeat the leak test every time you change the gas cylinder. Never check for leaks with a match or open flame.

ENERGY SAVING TIPS

  1. Turn the grill off as soon as you are done grilling.
  2. Preheat the grill with the lid closed for only 10-15 minutes (except for the first use).
  3. You do not need to preheat the grill longer than specified.

WARNING:
Check the gas connections for breakages, wear, or tear before use. Should you notice any of these, do not use the grill until the issue has been resolved.

When replacing or unscrewing the gas cylinder, make sure there are no fire sources such as candles, electrical appliances, or cigarettes within reach. Always check to ensure the cylinder is properly closed. Do not store a disconnected gas cylinder in the vicinity of this or any other appliances.

FIRST USE

OPERATING THE GAS GRILL

WARNING: Never light the grill with the lid closed.
Before cooking on the gas grill for the first time, be sure to wipe the lid’s surface and the combustion chamber’s outer parts with a soft cotton cloth using mild soapy water and dry all the parts. This will prevent any residues from the production process from burning in. Ensure that there is no debris caught in the head of the gas cylinder, regulator, burner and burner ports.

WARNING:
Check that all burners are correctly positioned in the respective nozzles and that all cables below are accessible before using the gas grill. If this is not the case, loosen the safety splints, remove the burners, and reposition them on the nozzles. Then retighten the safety splints.

STARTING UP THE AUTOMATIC IGNITION

WARNING:
The ignition electrode is operated with a battery. There is a risk of fire and explosion if batteries are handled incorrectly. Leaking battery acid can cause skin burns and damage to components.

  • Observe the manufacturer’s safety instructions for handling batteries.
  • Do not throw batteries into fire, short-circuit them or destroy them in any other way.
  • If you are not going to use the grill for a long time, remove the battery. This can leak out and cause irreparable damage to the grill.
  • Only handle damaged batteries with protective gloves.

Unscrew the battery compartment in the base unit and insert an AA battery (make sure the + symbol on the battery is pointing towards the cap). The automatic igniter is now ready for use.

BURNING THE GAS GRILL
Let the main burners (not the rear burners) burn in for 20 minutes without placing any food on the grill before using them for the first time. Preservation residues are removed in this way. You need not worry if it results in a slight odour. This is harmless. Make sure the grill is adequately ventilated.

IMPORTANT:
Over time, the heat inside the grill can lead to discolouration of the material. This is a normal reaction of stainless steel that does not reduce the quality of the product.

OPERATING THE GAS GRILL

CAUTION:
Do not use aluminium foil or an aluminium tray on the grease-drain plate or the grease-drip tray. Food residues can easily accumulate there and catch fire.

BEFORE EVERY USE

  • Check that the gas hose is not damaged and is free from cracks, porous spots and punctures.
  • Make sure that the gas hose is positioned as far away as possible from the heat of the combustion chamber. Ensure that the gas hose complies with your country’s requirements, e.g. that it has not exceeded the stipulated service life.
USING THE MAIN BURNERS

USING THE MAIN BURNERS

  1. Open the grill lid.

  2. Turn all control knobs clockwise to the “OFF” position.

  3. Connect the pressure regulator to the gas cylinder.

  4. Open the gas cylinder valve and use a leak detection spray or soapy water to check for leaks between the gas pressure regulator and the gas cylinder.

  5. The grill has an automatic ignition system for the main burners. You can use the main burners independently of each other. To do this, press the knob for one of the main burners and hold it down while turning it counterclockwise to the “HI” position. Press and hold down the left knob while turning it anticlockwise to the “HI” position. You will hear a “click” sound and the burner should ignite. If it does not ignite right away, repeat this step 3 to 4 times.
    WARNING:
If the burner does not ignite after repeated attempts, turn the knob clockwise to the “OFF” position and close the gas cylinder valve. Wait 5 minutes and then start again from step 4.

  6. Adjust the heat by turning by turning each knob to the desired setting between the highest (“HI”) and lowest (“LO”) levels.

  7. Let the grill heat up for approx. 15 minutes with the lid closed. The grill is now ready!
Your gas grill has a flame bridge that connects the individual main burners. If a burner goes out, e.g. due to strong gusts of wind, the flame bridge ensures that it automatically reignites.

USING THE INFRARED CERAMIC BURNER

WARNING:
The lid of the infrared ceramic burner installed on the side table must always be open before ignition or during operation. Allow the burner to cool completely after use before closing the lid.

The burner heats a ceramic stone perforated with small holes. The energy is stored by the stone, which allows particularly high temperatures to be reached. For example, you can give your steak a crispy crust in next to no time.

  1. Press and hold the knob while turning it counter-clockwise to the “HI” position. You will hear a clicking. The burner ignites.
  2. If the burner does not ignite, proceed as described for stainless-steel burners.

The ceramic burner is continuously variable, just like a standard stainless- steel burner.

USING THE REAR BURNER

WARNING:
The back burner must not be used at the same time as the main burners.

Use the rear burner, for example, when cooking with a rotisserie.

  1. Open the grill lid.
  2. Remove the warming grid.
  3. To ignite the back burner, proceed to ignite the infrared ceramic burner.

For an optimal grilling result, the lid should be closed during grilling with the back burner.

THE LID THERMOMETER
The optimum grilling range is 250–370 °C. Please note that the temperature displayed represents the cooking chamber and that the temperature of the grids may differ. This is generally higher.

USING THE FLAVOUR BARS AND THE SMOKER BOX

  • The flavour bars distribute the heat evenly and catch the juices, evaporating and adding extra flavour to your barbecued food. They also protect the burners from clogging with food and your food from flames.
  • Use the smoker box to add smoky flavours to your barbecued food. Fill the smoker box with dry or moist pellets or wood chips. Place the smoker box directly onto the flavour bars.

USING THE WARMING GRID
You can use the warming grid to keep barbecued food warm or to let it cook through slowly. You can pull it out to increase the surface area. Make sure the warming grid is fully extended and correctly positioned in the grooves on the sides.

USING THE DRAWERS
Use the drawers to store your barbecue accessories. You can also attach Gastronorm bowls and have sauces, spices and marinades directly to hand.

OUR TIP:
Convert the drawers into cooling chambers. To do this, place a large zip-top freezer bag with ice cubes into the drawers. You can then hang smaller Gastronorm bowls over the top. Once the ice has melted, you can simply refreeze the bag in the freezer and use it again.

  • The drawers can be removed. To do this, take two flat screwdrivers and press the black plastic tabs upwards on the left and downwards on the right to release the drawers from the tray.BURNHARD-EARL-4-Burner-Gas-Grill-with-Back-Burner-fig- \(29\)

Pull out the drawers. You can put them back in by simply pushing them in until they click.

SWITCHING THE GAS GRILL OFF

  1. To turn off the gas grill, move the switch to “OFF” in a clockwise direction.
  2. Close the valve of the gas cylinder and move all switches clockwise to the “OFF” position.
  3. Always turn the valve on the gas bottle off as soon as you finish barbecuing.

CLEANING THE GAS GRILL

Fire and explosion hazard

  • Do not use any flammable cleaning agents.
  • Remove the gas cylinder before cleaning the gas grill.
  • Wait until the grill has cooled down completely before cleaning.
  • Clean the grill after each use.
  • Remove the grease-drip tray and dispose the grease in an environmentally friendly manner.
  • Wipe the stainless-steel surfaces and grids using a wet cloth or clean it with hot water. If necessary, use a mild detergent. Rinse with water and allow the gas grill to dry completely before the next use. The stainless-steel grates, flavour bars and smoker box can be cleaned in the dishwasher.
  • Use a brush to remove food particles from the burners.
  • If in exceptional cases one of the nozzles is blocked, use a jet needle to clean it.
  • If in exceptional cases the Venturi tube (gas- mixing pipe) is blocked, use a needle or pipe cleaner to clean it.
  • Never use oven cleaner.

Recommended equipment:
Barbecue brush, soft cotton cloth (not microfiber), sponge, wooden scraper, bucket, suitable barbecue cleaner (for the interior), mild dishwashing detergent, possibly a scouring pad/steel wool, protective goggles, single-use gloves, splash guard for your upper body (apron)

CLEANING AFTER EACH USE
To prepare for your next barbecue session, you should let the grill burn out after every use (without food). This allows residue and grease on the grids to burn. Afterwards, you can simply brush them off.

  1. Close the lid and set all main burners (not the back burner) to “HI”.
  2. Let the grill burn out for 15–30 minutes until there is no more smoke coming out of the grill.
  3. Close the gas cylinder valve and turn off all burners.
  4. Slowly open the grill (be cautious of escaping heat) and scrub the grids with the barbecue brush until clean.
    • OUR TIP: Grill cleaning brushes come in different materials; each user prefers a specific type of brush.
  5. Stainless steel grids are very hard-wearing and can be brushed with more force. However, do not use steel wool, as small steel particles left behind can lead to flash rust.
  6. When the grill has cooled down completely, also empty and clean the grease-drip tray and the grease-drain plate. You can easily remove them via the opening under the table on the right-hand side.

CLEANING THE INTERIOR
To clean the inside of your grill, start by removing the grids, take out the grease-drain plate, and remove coarse dirt. Empty and clean the grease-drip tray.

  1. To clear coarse dirt out of the flame distributors, take them out and let them soak in warm water with a little dishwashing detergent for 1 hour. Then clean them with a sponge, warm water, and dishwashing detergent. You can also clean them in the dishwasher. Dry thoroughly afterwards.
  2. Loosen the locking pins and safety clips on the stainless steel burners and remove the burners from the grill.
  3. Replace the grease-drain plate with an opening above the gas cylinder and place an empty bucket on the position of the gas cylinder.
  4. Rinse out the interior of your grill with water (e.g. with a watering can). CAUTION: Make sure that no water gets into the gas nozzles.
  5. Apply a suitable cleaning agent for grill interiors (barbecue cleaner or dishwashing detergent) to the inside of the grill and let it soak for the amount of time indicated by the manufacturer. CAUTION: Do not exceed the recommended application time of the cleaning agent used. Otherwise the material can become discoloured or damaged.
  6. Remove stubborn stains in the interior of your grill with a sponge or a wooden scraper.
  7. Thoroughly rinse you grill with water, let it dry completely, and carefully clean the burners and nozzle outlets with a dry cotton cloth (or a brush).
  8. Put the removed parts back in place. When the burner tubes are correctly inserted into the opening to the control panel, they can be easily returned to their original position without much effort. Secure the burners again using the locking pins and safety clips.
  9. Check that all the burners are properly connected and functioning.

CLEANING THE EXTERIOR
Clean the exterior of your grill with a soft cotton cloth, warm water, and mild detergent.

WARNING:
Do not use a microfiber cloth to clean the surfaces – this would scratch the material.

MAINTENANCE OF THE STAINLESS STEEL GRIDS

  • Stainless steel grids do not need to be burned in. You can clean the durable grids with warm water, mild detergent and a sponge by hand or in the dishwasher.
  • Stainless steel can slightly discolour when exposed to high temperatures. This is a natural process and has no effect on the quality or your grilling result.

MAINTENANCE AND CLEANING OF THE WOODEN CHOPPING BOARD

PLEASE NOTE:
The enclosed wooden chopping board is a natural product and will expand and/or develop mould due to moisture and weathering. Therefore, store the chopping board in a warm, dry place after each barbecue and only take it outside when you are using the grill.

Clean the board after use with a damp sponge or with a little mild washing-up liquid if it is more heavily soiled. Never put the board in the dishwasher. Do not leave it in the dishwasher or soak it in any water for a long time. Treat the chopping board regularly with a suitable care oil.

MAINTENANCE AND CLEANING OF THE INFRARED CERAMIC BURNER
The ceramic brick cannot be cleaned. Fat and meat juices dripping onto the ceramic brick will combust. Hence, staining of the brick and baked-on residues are normal and do not affect the burner’s performance.

WARNING:
Under no circumstances should the ceramic brick be cleaned with water and/or detergents. If something falls through the protective grid and is not burnt completely, adjust the burner to the highest heat possible and let all residues combust for 10-15 minutes.

Make sure to only cook non-marinated grillables on the ceramic burner. Salty and acidy marinades or pepper may damage the ceramic brick when dripping down during cooking over long periods of time.

REGULAR MAINTENANCE

  • The grill should be thoroughly cleaned every 3-4 months or after long periods of non-use. You should let the grease residues burn, empty the grease trap, and clean the grease tray and grids every time you use the grill.
  • Check the venturi tube at the end of the main burners, especially after long periods of inactivity. It comes equipped with an insect and spider screen. Clean the screen with a brush.BURNHARD-EARL-4-Burner-Gas-Grill-with-Back-Burner-fig- \(31\)
