9. Do not defeat the safety purpose of the polarized or grounding-type plug. A polarized plug has two blades with one wider than the other. A grounding type plug has two blades and a third grounding prong. The wide blade or the third prong are provided for your safety. If the provided plug does not fit into your outlet, consult an electrician for replacement of the obsolete outlet.

10. Protect the power cord from being walked on or pinched particularly at plugs, convenience receptacles, and the point where they exit from the apparatus.

11. Only use attachments/accessories specified by the manufacturer.

12. Use only with the cart, stand, tripod, bracket, or table specified by the manufacturer, or sold with the apparatus. When a cart is used, use caution when moving the cart/apparatus combination to avoid injury from tip-over.

13. Unplug this apparatus during lightning storms or when unused for long periods of time.

14. Refer all servicing to qualified service personnel. Servicing is required when the apparatus has been damaged in any way, such as power-supply cord or plug is damaged, liquid has been spilled or objects have fallen into the apparatus, the apparatus has been exposed to rain or moisture, does not operate normally, or has been dropped.

15. Damage Requiring Service Unplug the apparatus from the wall outlet and refer servicing to qualified service personnel under the following conditions: A. When the power-supply cord or plug is damaged, B. If liquid has been spilled, or objects have fallen into the apparatus, C. If the apparatus has been exposed to rain or water, D. If the apparatus does not operate normally by following the operating instructions. Adjust only those controls that are covered by the operating instructions as an improper adjustment of other controls may result in damage and will often require extensive work by a qualified technician to restore the apparatus to its normal operation, E. If the apparatus has been dropped or damaged in any way, and F. When the apparatus exhibits a distinct change in performance this indicates a need for service.
16. Object and Liquid Entry Never push objects of any kind into the apparatus through openings as they may touch dangerous voltage points or short-out parts that could result in a fire or electric shock. The apparatus shall not be exposed to dripping or splashing and no objects filled with liquids, such as vases shall be placed on the apparatus. Don’t put candles or other burning objects on top of this unit.
17. Batteries Always consider the environmental issues and follow local regulations when disposing of batteries.
18. If you install the apparatus in a built-in installation, such as a bookcase or rack, ensure that there is adequate ventilation. Leave 20 cm (8″) of free space at the top and sides and 10 cm (4″) at the rear. The rear edge of the shelf or board above the apparatus shall be set 10 cm (4″) away from the rear panel or wall, creating a flue-like gap for warm air to escape.

Precautions
1. Recording Copyright–Unless it’s for personal use only, recording copyrighted material is illegal without the permission of the copyright holder.
2. AC Fuse–The AC fuse inside the unit is not userserviceable. If you cannot turn on the unit, contact your Onkyo dealer.
3. Care–Occasionally you should dust the unit all over with a soft cloth. For stubborn stains, use a soft cloth dampened with a weak solution of mild detergent and water. Dry the unit immediately afterwards with a clean cloth. Don’t use abrasive cloths, thinners, alcohol, or other chemical solvents, because they may damage the finish or remove the panel lettering.
4. Power WARNING BEFORE PLUGGING IN THE UNIT FOR THE FIRST TIME, READ THE FOLLOWING SECTION CAREFULLY. AC outlet voltages vary from country to country. Make sure that the voltage in your area meets the voltage requirements printed on the unit’s rear panel (e.g., AC 120 V, 60 Hz).
5. Never Touch this Unit with Wet Hands–Never handle this unit or its power cord while your hands are wet or damp. If water or any other liquid gets inside this unit, have it checked by your Onkyo dealer.
6. Handling Notes · If you need to transport this unit, use the original packaging to pack it how it was when you originally bought it. · Do not leave rubber or plastic items on this unit for a long time, because they may leave marks on the case. · This unit’s top and rear panels may get warm after prolonged use. This is normal. · If you do not use this unit for a long time, it may not work properly the next time you turn it on, so be sure to use it occasionally. · When you’ve finished using this unit, remove all discs and turn off the power.
7. Installing this Unit · Install this unit in a well-ventilated location. · Ensure that there’s adequate ventilation all around this unit, especially if it’s installed in an audio rack. If the ventilation is inadequate, the unit may overheat, leading to malfunction. · Do not expose this unit to direct sunlight or heat sources, because its internal temperature may rise, shortening the life of the optical pickup. · Avoid damp and dusty places, and places subject to vibrations from loudspeakers. Never put the unit on top of, or directly above a loudspeaker. · Install this unit horizontally. Never use it on its side or on a sloping surface, because it may cause a malfunction. · If you install this unit near a TV, radio, or VCR, the picture and sound quality may be affected. If this occurs, move this unit away from the TV, radio, or VCR.

8. To Obtain a Clear Picture–This unit is a high-tech, precision device. If the lens on the optical pickup, or the disc drive mechanism becomes dirty or worn, the picture quality may be affected. To maintain the best picture quality, we recommend regular inspection and maintenance (cleaning or worn part replacement) every 1,000 hours of use depending on the operating environment. Contact your Onkyo dealer for details.
9. Moisture Condensation Moisture condensation may damage this unit. Read the following carefully: Moisture may condense on the lens of the optical pickup, one of the most important parts inside this unit. · Moisture condensation can occur in the following situations: The unit is moved from a cold place to a warm place. A heater is turned on, or cold air from an air conditioner is hitting the unit. In the summer, when this unit is moved from an air conditioned room to a hot and humid place. The unit is used in a humid place. · Do not use this unit when there’s the possibility of moisture condensation occurring. Doing so may damage your discs and certain parts inside this unit. If condensation does occur, remove all discs and leave this unit turned on for two to three hours. By this time, the unit will have warmed up and any condensation will have evaporated.
10. Region Numbers–The DVD standard uses region numbers to control how discs can be played around the world, the world being divided into six regions. This unit will only play DVD discs that match its region number, which can be found on its rear panel
(e.g., 1 , ). ALL
11. About this Manual–This manual explains how to use all of this unit’s functions. Although the DVD standard offers many special features, not all discs use them all, so depending on the disc being played, this unit may not respond to certain functions. See the disc’s sleeve notes for supported features.

If placed in a cabinet, make sure there is adequate ventilation at the back and the front of the cabinet. If you detect any damage, contact your dealer immediately. · To avoid short circuits, keep paper clips, screws, and staples away from connectors, slots, sockets, and circuitry. · Avoid dust, humidity, and temperature extremes. Do not place the product in any area where it may become wet. Place the product on a stable surface. · If you encounter technical problems with the product, contact a qualified service technician or your retailer. · Slots and openings are provided for ventilation; to ensure reliable operation of the product and to protect it from overheating. These openings must not be blocked or covered. This product should never be placed near or over a radiator or heat register.

Precautions–Continued
Hard Disk Data
Subjecting the product to vibration, shock, power loss, etc., may cause damage or data lose. Especially when using the product, do not subject it to vibration or shock and do not disconnect the power cord. In addition, back up your important data regularly to a recordable CD, DVD, or an external hard disk. Note that hard disk failure is not covered by the warranty. Any repairs must be paid for by the user.
Cooling Fan Noise
When you first turn on the product, or when you turn it on after disconnecting and reconnecting the power cord, the sound of the cooling fan may be quite loud temporarily. This is because the fan control circuit has not yet activated and is not a malfunction.

Disc Notes

Playable Discs
The types of discs that can be played in the NVS-7.7 is dependent on the playback software (i.e., Media Center and PowerDVD). Read this section carefully and play discs accordingly. · Depending on how they were recorded, some discs
may not play properly even if they bear one of the supported disc logos. · Do not move or vibrate the NVS-7.7 during playback, as it may damage the disc. Do not touch the disc tray while it’s moving, as it may cause a malfunction. · Do not press down on the disc tray, and do not place anything other than discs on it. Doing so may damage the disc drive. · Typically a menu appears when movie playback finishes. If the same menu is displayed for a long time, it may cause screen burn-in and damage your TV screen. To prevent this, press the Stop button when playback finishes.

*d. The NVS-7.7 doesn’t support digital output for DTS CDs. DTS CDs can only be played with the PowerDVD program when the Enable S/PDIF option is deselected. Trying to play a DTS CD with Media Center may produce noise or a system crash. When playing DTS CDs, always start PowerDVD before loading the disc (see page 38).
· The NVS-7.7 does not support DVD-VR discs that use CPRM (Content Protection for Recordable Media). Do not try to play such discs.
· Some audio CDs feature copy protection that doesn’t conform to the official CD standard. Since these are nonstandard discs, they may not play properly in the NVS-7.7.
· Some CD±R/RW and DVD±R/RW discs may not work properly for any of the following reasons: incomplete disc finalization, disc burner characteristics, disc characteristics, the disc is damaged or dirty. See the manual supplied with your disc burner for more information. Condensation or dirt on the optical pickup lens can also affect playback.
· The NVS-7.7 supports 8 cm and 12 cm discs. · Don’t use discs with an unusual shape, such as those
shown below, as they may damage the NVS-7.7.
· Don’t use discs that have residue from adhesive tape, rental discs with peeling labels, or discs with custom-made labels or stickers. Doing so may damage the NVS-7.7 and you may not be able to remove the disc properly.
DVD-Video Regions
The DVD-Video standard uses region numbers to control how discs can be played around the world, the world being divided into six regions, as shown. The NVS-7.7 will only play DVD-Video discs that match its region number, which can be found on the rear panel (e.g., ). If you attempt to play a disc intended for another region, a message saying that the disc cannot be played appears. Discs marked ALL can be played in any DVD player.

a. Discs recorded in VR mode can only be played with the PowerDVD program.
b. DVD-Audio discs can only be played with the PowerDVD program.
*c. Video CDs can only be played with the PowerDVD program.

Disc Notes–Continued

About PowerDVD Playability
You must use the PowerDVD program to play DVD-Audio, DTS CD, and Video CD discs. These types of discs are not supported by Media Center. PowerDVD cannot display photos and images (JPEG, GIF, BMP, etc). Use Media Center to display these types of files.
Video CD
The PowerDVD program supports Video CDs with PBC (Versions 1.1 and 2.0). Media Center does not support Video CD. · Video CD (Version 1.1)
On the NVS-7.7, the contents of Video CDs that conform to Version 1.1 of the Video CD standard are handled as tracks. · Video CD with PBC (Version 2.0) In addition to the functions supported by Version 1.1, Version 2.0 offers playback control via interactive menus and search functions. Note that the NVS-7.7 doesn’t support all PBC functions.
Unfinalized Discs
Unfinalized discs cannot be played in the NVS-7.7. If you record your own discs with a DVD recorder or other disc burner, always remember to finalize them.
Recordable Discs
The types of discs that can be recorded in the NVS-7.7 is dependent on the recording software (i.e., Media Center and NeroVision Express 3). Read this section carefully and record discs accordingly. · To make a data CD/DVD or audio CD, in Media
Center, select to the Create CD/DVD menu. From there, you can make a data CD/DVD containing your digital music files, photos, and video, or make an audio CD, which can be played in any standard CD player. · To make a DVD in Video mode or VR mode, use NeroVision Express 3. You can burn your video files in DVD-Video format (Video mode) or DVD Video Recording format (VR mode). With CD-R/RW discs, you can make Video CD, Super Video CD, and miniDVD discs.
Disc Recording Notes
· While disc recording is in progress, don’t use the NVS-7.7 for anything else, as it may cause the recording to fail.

· Even if they bear one of the supported disc logos, recording may not be possible with some discs, and some discs may not be playable due to the way in which they were recorded.
· Some file formats cannot be recorded to disc. · Recording is not possible with some copy protected
CDs and CDs that do not conform to the CD standard. For more details, contact the dealer from where you buy your CDs.

Handling Discs
· Never touch the underside of a disc. Always hold discs by the edge, as shown.
Underside · Never attach adhesive tape or sticky labels to discs.
Cleaning Discs
· For best results, keep your discs clean. Fingerprints and dust can affect the sound and picture quality and should be removed as follows. Using a clean soft cloth, wipe from the center outwards, as shown. Never wipe in a circular direction.

J COAXIAL/OPTICAL DIGITAL AUDIO OUT (30) These coaxial and optical digital audio outputs are for a digital audio connection to your AV receiver. They support up to 5.1channels. With this connection, the volume level is set solely on the AV receiver.
K ANALOG 7.1CH AUDIO OUT (31) These FRONT L/R, SURROUND L/R, SURR BACK L/R, CENTER, and SUBWOOFER jacks are for a 7.1- or 5.1-channel analog audio connection to your AV receiver. With this connection, the volume level can be set on the NVS-7.7 and AV receiver.

Installing the Batteries
1 To open the battery compartment,
press the small lug and remove the cover.
2 Insert the three supplied batteries
(AA/R6) in accordance with the polarity diagram inside the battery compartment.
3 Replace the cover.

Using the Keyboard
The wireless keyboard uses radio signals (RF) to communicate with the NVS-7.7 so you don’t have to aim it at the NVS-7.7 when you use it. Notes: · The operating range for the wireless key-
board is up to approximately 20 feet (7 m), although, this will depend on the environment in which it’s used. If the keyboard doesn’t work reliably, try moving it closer to the NVS-7.7, or press the Transmit [ ] button. · Even within the operating range there may be some areas (dead spots) where the keyboard doesn’t work reliably. This is a characteristic of RF signals and is not a malfunction. If this occurs, move the keyboard. · Don’t put anything on top of the keyboard, such as a book or magazine, because a button may be pressed continuously, thereby draining the batteries.

Notes: · If the keyboard doesn’t work reliably, try
replacing the batteries. · Don’t mix new and old batteries or different
types of batteries. · If you intend not to use the keyboard for a

About Audio and Video Connections

Optical Digital Jack
The NVS-7.7’s optical digital jack has a shuttertype cover that opens when an optical plug is inserted and closes when it’s removed. Push the plug in all the way.
Caution: To prevent shutter damage, hold the optical plug straight when inserting and removing.

This is a high-quality analog video connection and is commonly used to connect computer displays.

Component video separates the luminance (Y) and color difference signals (PR, PB), providing better picture quality than S-Video. (Some TV manufacturers label their component video jacks slightly differently.)

S-Video separates the luminance and color signals for a better picture. We recommend that you use the S-Video plug.

This section explains how to connect TV signal sources to the NVS-7.7. The options are as follows:

This section explains how to connect your TV or PC monitor to the NVS-7.7. The options are as follows:

If you connect a cable or satellite set-top box to the NVS-7.7, you must also connect a commercially available IR emitter.

Turn on your system components in the following order:

Connect the supplied power cord to the NVS-7.7’s AC INLET,

and then connect the other end to a suitable wall outlet. (We

recommended that you use a power surge protector.)

Turn on your display (TV or computer monitor).

Always turn on your TV or display before turning on the NVS-7.7, other-

wise the picture may not appear.

Press the NVS-7.7’s Standby/On button.

The Standby indicator goes off.

Keyboard

Turn on your audio system.
To turn on the wireless keyboard, press its Transmit button. To conserve battery power, the keyboard will automatically switch to Standby mode when it’s not used for a while and pressing the keys will have no effect. In this case, press the Transmit button to turn it on again.

Notes: · Before connecting the power cord, connect all of your AV components.
· Turning on the NVS-7.7 may cause a momentary power surge that might interfere with other electrical equipment on the same circuit. If this is a problem, plug the NVS-7.7 into a different branch circuit.
· Do not use a power cord other than the one supplied with the NVS-7.7. The supplied power cord is designed exclusively for use with the NVS-7.7 and should not be used with any other equipment.
· Never disconnect the power cord from the NVS-7.7 while the other end is still plugged into a wall outlet. Doing so may cause an electric shock. Always disconnect the power cord from the wall outlet first, and then the NVS-7.7.

Step 9: Complete the Windows® Setup Wizard
The Windows® Setup Wizard will appear the very first time you turn on the NVS-7.7. Follow the Windows® Setup Wizard’s onscreen instructions to set the date, time, and other basic settings.
You will be asked to enter your product key, which you can find on the Windows® Certificate of Authenticity (COA) label attached to the side of the NVS-7.7. The product key consists of 25 alphanumeric characters divided into five parts and separated with hyphens. You do not need to enter the hyphens.

Activating Windows® After turning on the NVS-7.7 for the very first time, you must activate Windows® within 30 days by using the Activation Wizard, which you can start by clicking the Windows® Activation icon in the taskbar. Step 11: Complete the Media Center Setup Wizard
The Media Center Setup Wizard will appear the very first time you start Media Center. Follow the Media Center Setup Wizard’s onscreen instructions. Once you have completed the Setup Wizard, the Media Center’s Start menu will appear.

Step 12: Activate PowerDVD
Before playing a DVD in Media Center, you must enter your CD key in the CyberLink PowerDVD program. In addition, to enable DVD-Audio playback, after entering your CD key and restarting, PowerDVD will automatically connect to the Internet and obtain a CPPM key code (Content Protection for Prerecorded Media), so make sure it’s possible to connect to the Internet before starting PowerDVD.
You’ll Need:
· PowerDVD CD key (attached to the last page of this manual) · Internet access
1 On the Media Center Start menu, click DVD Audio.
PowerDVD starts. You can also start PowerDVD from the Windows® desktop. Click the Start button, click All Programs, and then click PowerDVD.
2 Use the keyboard or the remote controller’s number buttons to enter the CD key.
Your CD key is attached to the last page of this manual. You will be asked to enter the CD key only the very first time you start PowerDVD.

3 Click Activate. 4 Repeat step 1 and restart PowerDVD to obtain a CPPM key code.

Step 13: Enable 5.1-channel Digital Audio Output

If you’ve connected the NVS-7.7 to your AV receiver with an optical or coaxial digital audio connection, to enjoy Dolby Digital and DTS, you must change the following settings for Media Center and PowerDVD.

Setting the NVS-7.7 to Standby Mode
You can set the NVS-7.7 to Standby mode by pressing the Standby/On button on the NVS-7.7 or remote controller. In Standby mode, scheduled activities such as TV recording are still performed.

The NVS-7.7 switches to Standby mode and the Standby/On indicator lights up red. The display remain on in Standby mode.

Note: If the NVS-7.7 is not used for a while, it will automatically switch to Standby mode. In this case, press the Standby/On button on the NVS-7.7 or remote controller to resume operation. Caution! Do not disconnect the power cord plug while the NVS-7.7 is on Standby.
Reducing Power Consumption in Standby Mode
The NVS-7.7 will consume the same amount of power in Standby mode as it does when it’s on. To reduce power consumption in Standby mode, from the Windows® desktop, click the Start button, click Turn Off Computer, and then click Standby. Caution! Do not disconnect the power cord plug while the NVS-7.7 is on Standby.

Advanced Audio Output Settings
Multichannel Output Settings
If you connect the NVS-7.7’s ANALOG 7.1CH AUDIO OUT to your AV receiver, you can use the SigmaTel Audio control panel to configure the speaker settings. These settings only apply to the multichannel ANALOG 7.1CH AUDIO OUT. You only need to change these settings if your AV receiver doesn’t have its own speaker configuration settings.

Open the SigmaTel Audio Control Panel
1 Click the Start button, click Control
Panel, and then click Sounds, Speech, and Audio Devices.
2 Click SigmaTel Audio.
The SigmaTel Audio control panel opens.
Speaker Test Settings
1 Click the Speaker Test tab.
2 From the Speaker Configuration
pop-up menu, select the configuration that matches your speakers: 7.1 Speakers: Select this if your AV
receiver is connected with a 7.1channel connection. 5.1 Speakers: Select this if your AV receiver is connected with a 5.1channel connection. Stereo Speakers: Select this if your AV receiver or TV is connected to the ANALOG 7.1CH AUDIO OUT FRONT L/R jacks for a stereo connection. Headphones: Select this to use Dolby Headphone.

3 Right-click the subwoofer picture
and make the following settings: Enable/Disable: Select Enable if a sub-
woofer is connected. Select Disable if no subwoofer is connected. Delay: This is used to specify the subwoofer distance relative to the front speakers. If the subwoofer is closer to the listening position than the front speakers, select a + value. If it’s further away than the front speakers, select a negative value. Crossover Frequency: Specify the subwoofer’s crossover frequency.
4 Right-click each speaker in turn and
make the following settings: Speaker Size:Based on the diameter of
the speaker, select Large for speakers larger than 6-1/2” (16 cm), and select Small for smaller speakers. Delay: This is used to specify the speaker distance relative to the front speakers. If the speaker is closer to the listening position than the front speakers, select a + value. If it’s further away than the front speakers, select a negative value.
5 Click the Start Setup button.
A test tone is output by each speaker in turn. Make sure that all speakers output the test tone. If any speakers don’t output the test tone, check the speaker connections.

1 Click the Levels tab. 2 Use the slider to adjust the master
volume. The slider is linked to the remote controller’s VOL +/ button.

The Speaker Volume dialog box appears, where you can adjust the individual volume level of each speaker.
Left: Front left speaker. Right: Front right speaker. Center: Center speaker. Low Frequency: Subwoofer. Back Left: Surround back left speaker. Back Right: Surround back right speaker. Aux Left: Surround left speaker. Aux Right: Surround right speaker.

3 To emphasize the subwoofer, adjust
the Bass Boost slider.
Note: The Enable Digital Output check box on the Advanced tab should be left selected, otherwise no digital audio will be output.
Adjusting the Volume Level by Format
On the SigmaTel Audio control panel, you can adjust the volume level by format.
1 Click the Levels tab.
Wave: This adjusts the volume level of digital audio files such as WAV, MP3, and WMA. On the NVS-7.7, it also determines the volume level for CD playback.
SW Synth: This adjusts the volume level of MIDI song file playback.
CD Player: This slider is not used on the NVS-7.7.

Bass Management

Dolby Settings
The SigmaTel Audio control panel allows you to configure the Dolby functions. Although you can fully enjoy Dolby Digital with the default settings, you can fine tune them as you like. Note: The Dolby functions only work with the DIGITAL AUDIO OUT jacks and the ANALOG 7.1CH AUDIO OUT jacks. They do not work with the 2CH AUDIO OUT (VLSC) jacks.
Click the Dolby tab.

5.1 Speakers: Select this if your AV receiver is connected with a 5.1-channel connection. If the Pro Logic IIx check box is selected, you can enjoy 5.1-channel playback from any source.
Stereo Speakers: Select this if your AV receiver or TV is connected to the ANALOG 7.1CH AUDIO OUT FRONT L/R jacks for a stereo connection. If the Enable Speaker Virtualization Support option is selected, you can enjoy Dolby Virtual Speaker. (This setting has no effect on the ANALOG 2CH AUDIO OUT.)

Pro Logic IIx
Pro Logic IIx expands 2-channel and 5.1-channel music and movies for 7.1-channel playback. It provides a natural and seamless surroundsound experience that fully envelops the listener.

Configuration

When you connect to the ANALOG 7.1CH AUDIO OUT jacks or you want to enjoy Dolby Headphone, select the appropriate configuration from the Speaker Configuration pop-up menu. The configuration you select determines which of the Dolby functions are available. 7.1 Speakers: Select this if your AV receiver is
connected with a 7.1-channel connection. If the Pro Logic IIx check box is selected, you can enjoy 7.1-channel playback from any source.

Advanced Audio Output Settings–Continued

Dimension
With the Dimension setting, you can move the soundfield forward or backward. With 0 being the base point, selecting a positive value moves the soundfield forward, while selecting a minus value moves it backward. If the stereo image feels too wide or there’s too much surround sound, move the soundfield forward to improve the balance. Conversely, if the stereo image feels like it’s in mono or there’s not enough surround sound, move the soundfield backward.
Center Width
With the Center Width setting, you can adjust the width of the center channel sound. By feeding some of the center channel signal to the front left and right speakers, the weight of the center channel sound can be controlled. With higher settings, the center channel signal is fed mostly to the front left and right speakers, for a wider sound.
Enable Panorama
With the Panorama function, you can create a seamless, wraparound sound from the front left and right speakers that fully envelops the listener. To turn on the Panorama function, select the Enable Panorama check box.
Dolby Digital Live
Dolby Digital Live converts computer and game WMA, WMV, and other digital audio into Dolby Digital so that it can be output digitally. (Dolby Digital Live only works with the DIGITAL AUDIO OUT jacks.)
Enable Dolby Digital Live Support
To turn on the Dolby Digital Live function, select the Enable Dolby Digital Live Support check box. To use Dolby Digital Live, the Pro Logic IIx check box must be selected.

Dolby Virtual Speaker
With Dolby Virtual Speaker, you can enjoy 5.1channel surround sound even with only two speakers. (Dolby Virtual Speaker only works with the ANALOG 7.1CH AUDIO OUT FRONT L/R jacks.)
Enable Speaker Virtualization Support
To use the Dolby Virtual Speaker function, select Stereo Speakers from the Speaker Configuration pop-up menu, and turn on the Enable Speaker Virtualization Support check box.
Speaker Mode
The Speaker Mode can be set to Reference or Wide. In Reference mode, the width of the frontsound image is determined by the distance between the front left and right speakers. In Wide mode, the front sound image is widened to provide a more spacious surround sound.
Dolby Headphone
With Dolby Headphone, you can enjoy 5.1channel surround sound in your headphones.
Enable Headphone Virtualization Support
To use the Dolby Headphone function, select Headphones from the Speaker Configuration pop-up menu, and select the Enable Headphone Virtualization Support check box.

System Recovery
If the NVS-7.7 or the preinstalled software is operating unreliably or connected peripherals don’t work as expected and it becomes necessary to reinstall the system software, you can perform a system recovery. The NVS-7.7 comes with the SoftThink System Recovery software preinstalled.
Important–Back up your important data before continuing
Before performing a system recovery, back up your important data, such as your digital music files, photos, mail, and so on.
System Recovery Types
There are two types of system recovery: Nondestructive and Quick Format. 1. Nondestructive System Recovery With a Nondestructive System Recovery, the operating system, drivers, and preinstalled programs are restored without affecting any files that you’ve added. 2. Quick Format System Recovery With a Quick Format System Recovery, the operating system, drivers, and preinstalled programs are reinstalled and any files or programs you’ve added are erased. Make sure that a Quick Format System Recovery is really necessary before continuing.
Nondestructive System Recovery
1 Disconnect all peripherals attached to the NVS-7.7.
To safely remove a USB device, click the Eject Hardware icon in the taskbar, and then click the Safely Remove USB message. When the Safe To Remove Hardware message appears, disconnect the USB device.
2 Click the Start button, click All Programs, and then click System Recovery.
The System Recovery dialog box appears.

If you have any trouble using the NVS-7.7, look for a solution in this section. Note that the trouble may be due to another of your components, so refer to your other instruction manuals as well while troubleshooting.
Power
Can’t turn on the NVS-7.7 · Make sure that the power cord is plugged into
the wall outlet properly. · Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet,
wait 5 seconds or more, then plug it in again.
Audio
There is no sound or it’s very quiet · Make sure that all audio connecting plugs are
pushed in all the way. · Make sure the volume isn’t turned down all
the way. · If the Mute indicator is shown on the display,
press the remote controller’s [MUTE] button to unmute the NVS-7.7. · When the S/PDIF settings in Media Center and PowerDVD are both on, nothing is output by the analog outputs when a Dolby Digital or DTS soundtrack is played (page 38).

There is no digital output · On the SigmaTel Audio control panel >

Noise can be heard · Make sure that all audio connecting plugs are
pushed in all the way. · Using cable ties to bundle audio cables with
power cords, speaker cables, and so on may degrade the audio performance, so don’t do it. · An audio cable may be picking up interference. Try repositioning your cables. · When playing a DTS source, using the pause, fast forward, or fast reverse function on your player may produce a short audible noise. This is not a malfunction. · Trying to play a DTS CD with Media Center may produce noise. DTS CDs can only be played with the PowerDVD program when the Enable S/PDIF option is deselected (page 38 of this manual and page 30 of the Media Center Instruction Manual).
Can’t output Dolby Digital or DTS from the digital outputs (optical/coaxial) · If you’ve connected your AV receiver to a dig-
ital audio output, to output Dolby Digital and DTS, you must change the digital audio output settings (page 38).
Can’t adjust the volume · If your AV receiver is connected to a digital
audio output on the NVS-7.7, the volume must be adjusted on the AV receiver (page 30). · If your AV receiver is connected to NVS-7.7’s 2CH AUDIO OUT jacks, the volume must be adjusted on the AV receiver (page 31).
Audio performance Audio performance will be at its best about 10 to 30 minutes after the NVS-7.7 has been turned on and had time to warm up.
Video
The picture distorts occasionally · Remove the disc and try cleaning it (page 9). · When fast forwarding or rewinding, the pic-
ture may distort slightly. · Running multiple programs simultaneously
may cause screen redraw problems. This is not a malfunction of the NVS-7.7.

Picture instability or noise · If the NVS-7.7 is connected to your TV via a
VCR or other video component, a copy-protection system may affect the picture quality, so connect it directly to your TV. · Depending on your TV or monitor, during playback, the color saturation (color level) may be slightly weak, or the color tint may change. In addition, some discs may contain high resolution video that may cause picture noise. In this case, adjust your TV or monitor to achieve the best picture.
There’s no picture · On your TV, select the input to which the
NVS-7.7 is connected. · Always turn on your TV or monitor before
turning on the NVS-7.7. · The NVS-7.7 cannot output video from the
component video, S-Video, and composite video jacks simultaneously. Connect your TV or monitor to only one of the video outputs. · When playback is paused or stopped and the same picture is displayed for a long time, the Windows® screen saver will activate. Press the Play [ ] button to cancel the screen saver. · If you’re using a DVI-to-HDMI adapter cable to connect the NVS-7.7, connect it directly to your TV. Don’t connect the NVS-7.7 via another component, as the picture may not display correctly.
The picture is not clear when using the S-Video or composite video connection · With an S-Video or composite video connec-
tion, the picture will not be as clear as it is when using the DVI or component video connection. If your TV has a large screen, we recommend you use the DVI or component video connection.
The picture color is distorted · Try moving your speakers away from your TV.

There’s no picture from the component video output when playing a DVD · When using the component video output,
right-click on the Windows® desktop, and click Graphics Properties to open the Display control panel. Click the Display Settings tab, and set the video standard to HDTV_480p59 or HDTV_480i59. If HDTV_720p59 or HDTV_1080i59 is selected, there will be no picture when playing a DVD. If you select HDTV_720p50 or a setting that ends with something other than 59, you may lose the picture completely, so be careful.
Disc Playback
Can’t start playback · Use only supported discs (page 7). · The types of discs that can be played in the
NVS-7.7 is dependent on the playback software (i.e., Media Center and PowerDVD). For example, DVD-Audio and Video CD discs can only be played by PowerDVD. · The NVS-7.7 supports NTSC. If you attempt to play a PAL disc, the picture will not display correctly.
Playback doesn’t start immediately · It takes time to read a DVD or CD that con-
tains lot of tracks. This is normal.
Audio playback skips, jumps, or is noisy · If the NVS-7.7 is subjected to vibration, or the
disc is scratched or dirty, audio playback may skip.
A disc is loaded but doesn’t play · Make sure the disc is loaded the right way up. · Make sure the disc isn’t scratched or damaged. · If you think there may be condensation on the
disc, leave the NVS-7.7 turned on for about 1 hour before using it.
DVD Playback
Can’t play a DVD · Before playing a DVD for the very first time,
you must enter the CyberLink PowerDVD CD key and obtain a CPPM key code (page 37).

· Check the disc’s region number. The NVS-7.7 can play discs that bear the Region 1 or ALL logo.
DVD-Audio Playback
Can’t play a DVD-Audio disc · DVD-Audio discs can only be played by the
PowerDVD program. Start PowerDVD before loading the DVD-Audio disc (see page 30 of the Media Center Instruction Manual). · Before playing a DVD-Audio disc for the very first time, you must enter the CyberLink PowerDVD CD key and obtain a CPPM key code (page 37).
Copy-controlled CDs
Playback is noisy or skips, the first track doesn’t play, it takes longer than normal to locate the beginning of tracks, playback starts in the middle of a track, some sections of a track cannot be played, playback stops half way through a track, or the information shown on the display is incorrect · Copy- controlled CDs are special discs that
don’t conform to the audio CD standard and, therefore, may not work properly in the NVS-7.7.
CD-R/RW, DVD±R/RW Playback
Can’t play a disc · Make sure the disc has been finalized.
TV Reception
On the NVS-7.7, you can’t watch both TV received via antenna (CATV, TV (NTSC), TV (ATSC)) and TV received via a cable or satellite set-top box. The very first time you start Media Center, you must chose one or the other as the TV Signal Source in the Media Center Setup Wizard.
TV reception is noisy · Check your TV antenna connections (page 26). · Check the TV Input settings in Media Center
(see page 27 of the Media Center Instruction Manual).

FM radio reception is noisy · Check your FM antenna connections (page 27). · Relocate your FM antenna. · Passing cars and airplanes may cause interfer-
ence. · Concrete walls weaken radio signals. · If nothing improves the reception, install an
outdoor FM antenna.
Remote Controller
The remote controller doesn’t work · Make sure the batteries are installed with the
correct polarity (page 22). · Try replacing all of the batteries with new
ones. (Don’t mix new and old batteries or different types of batteries.) · Make sure the remote controller is not too far away from the NVS-7.7, and that there’s no obstruction between the remote controller and the NVS-7.7’s remote control sensor (page 22). · The remote controller may not work reliably if the NVS-7.7’s remote control sensor is subjected to bright light, such as direct sunlight or inverter-type fluorescent lights. · If the NVS-7.7 is installed in a cabinet with colored glass doors, the remote controller may not work reliably when the doors are closed.

· The keyboard may not work reliably when used close to a wireless computer network, microwave oven, or other device that uses the 2.4 GHz frequency range. Try using the keyboard closer to the NVS-7.7.
· Make sure the batteries are installed with the correct polarity (page 19).
· Try replacing all of the batteries with new ones. (Don’t mix new and old batteries or different types of batteries.)
· Make sure there’s no obstacle between the keyboard and NVS-7.7.
Memory Card Slots
Inserting a memory card 1. Insert the memory card with the labelside facing up.
Viewing the contents of a memory card 1. On the Windows® desktop, click the Start button, and then click My Computer.
2. Double-click the Removable Disk (i.e., memory card) you inserted. When you insert a memory card, four Removable Disk icons, each assigned a drive letter, appear. One for MMC/SD cards (E:), one for CompactFlash I/II cards (F:), one for SmartMedia cards (G:), and one for MS/MS Pro cards (H:).

Keyboard
The keyboard doesn’t work · Simultaneously press the NVS-7.7’s Key-
board Reset button and the keyboard’s Transmit button. Resetting the keyboard helps to protect against interference from other wireless keyboards used in the same environment.

Note: The actual drive letters assigned to the Removable Disks (e.g., E, F, G, and H) depends on which drive letters are already in use when the card is inserted.

Onkyo is not responsible for damages (such as CD rental fees) due to unsuccessful recordings caused by the unit’s malfunction. Before you record important data, make sure that the material will be recorded correctly.
The NVS-7.7 contains a microcomputer for signal processing and control functions. In very rare situations, severe interference, noise from an external source, or static electricity may cause it to lockup. In the unlikely event that this happens, unplug the power cord from the wall outlet, wait at least five seconds, and then plug it back in again.

3. After confirming that the information under Details has changed as shown in the screen shots below, remove the memory card.
Windows® About Windows® activation · After turning on the NVS-7.7 for the very first
time, you must activate Windows® within 30 days. If you don’t activate it, once the 30 days is up, you will no longer be able to use Windows® and the activation window will appear. Follow the instructions on the window to activate your copy of Windows® (page 34).
SigmaTel Audio Changing the SigmaTel Audio settings has no effect · The SigmaTel Audio settings do not affect the
2CH AUDIO OUT. · Some SigmaTel Audio settings only affect the
