IMPORTANT SAFEGUARDS

Please read all of the safety and operating instructions before operating this unit. For best results, follow all warnings placed on the unit and adhere to the operating and use instructions. These safety and operating instructions should be retained for future reference.

  1. Power sources – The unit should be connected to a power supply only of the type described in the operating instructions or as marked on the appliance.
  2.   3. Grounding or polarization – The precautions should be taken so that the grounding or polarization means of this unit is not defeated.
  4. Ventilation – The unit should be situated so that its location or position does not interfere with its proper ventilation. To maintain good ventilation, do not put records or a tablecloth on the unit. Place the unit at least 10 cm away from the walls. Do not use the unit on a bed, sofa, rug or similar surface that may block the ventilation openings.

  6. Temperature – The unit may not function properly if used at extremely low, or freezing temperatures. The ideal ambient temperature is above + 5°C (41°F).
  7. Heat – The unit should be situated away from heat sources such as radiators, heat registers, stoves, or other units (including amplifiers) that produce heat.
  8. Electric shock – Care should be taken so that ob-jects do not fall and liquid is not spilled into the enclosure through openings. If a metal object, such as a hairpin or a needle, comes into contact with the inside of this unit, a dangerous electric shock may result. For families with children, never permit children to put anything, especially metal, inside this unit.
  9. Enclosure removal – Never remove the enclosure. If the internal parts are touched accidentally, a serious electric shock might occur.
  10. Magnetic fields – Keep the unit away from sources of magnetic fields such as TV sets, speaker systems, radios, motorized toys or magnetized objects.
  11. Cleaning – Do not use volatile solvents such as alcohol, paint thinner, gasoline, or benzene, etc. to clean the cabinet. Use a clean dry cloth.
  12. Carts and stands — An appliance and cart combination should be moved with care. Quick stops, excessive force, and uneven surfaces may cause the appliance and cart combination to overturn.
  13. Nonuse periods – The power cord of the unit should be unplugged from the outlet when left un-used for a long period.
  14. Abnormal smell – If an abnormal smell or smoke is detected, immediately turn the power OFF and pull out the power cord. Contact your dealer or nearest service center.
  15. Damage requiring service – The unit should be serviced by qualified service personnel when:
    • A. The power-supply cord or the plug has been damaged; or
    • B. Objects have fallen, or liquid has been spilled into the unit; or
    • C. The unit has been exposed to rain; or
    • D. The unit does not appear to operate normally or exhibits a marked change in performance; or
    • E. The unit has been dropped, or the enclosure damaged.
  16. Servicing – The user should not attempt to service the unit beyond that described in the operating instructions. All other servicing should be referred to qualified service personnel.
  17. Outdoor antenna grounding – If an outside antenna is connected to the receiver, be sure the antenna system is grounded so as to provide some protection against voltage surges and built-up static charges. Section 810 of the National Electrical Code, ANSI/NFPA 70, provides information for proper grounding of the mast and supporting structure, grounding of the lead-in wire to an antenna discharge unit, size of grounding con- ductors, location of the antenna-discharge unit, connection to grounding electrodes, and requirements for the grounding electrode. See Figure.

Before operation

Beware of condensation

  • When water vapor comes into contact with the surface of cold material, water drops are produced.
  • If condensation occurs, correct operation may not be possible, or the unit may not function correctly.
  • This is not a malfunction, however, and the unit should be dried. (To do this, turn the POWER switch ON and leave the unit as it is for several hours.)

Be especially careful in the following conditions:

  • When the unit is brought from a cold place to a warm place, and there is a large temperature difference.
  • When a heater starts operating.
  • When the unit is brought from an air-conditioned place to a place of high temperature with high humidity.
  • When there is a large difference between the internal temperature of the unit and the ambient temperature, or in conditions where condensation occurs easily.

Note related to transportation and movement

Carry out the following operations before transporting or moving this unit.

  1. Remove the discs and the magazine from the unit and turn the power on.
  2. Wait a few seconds to check that the display appears as shown in the illustration at the right.
  3. Turn the power off.

Disc handling precautions

  • Handling
    • Hold a compact disc so that you do not touch the playing surface.
    • Do not attach paper or tape to either the playing side or the label side of compact discs.
  • Cleaning
    • If fingerprints or foreign matter become attached to the disc, lightly wipe the disc with a soft cotton cloth (or similar) from the center of the disc outwards radially.
    • Never use chemical solvents. such as thinner, benzine, etc., and conventional record cleaner aerosols.
  • Storage
    • When a disc is not to be played for a long period, remove it from the CD player and store it in its case.

Types of disc that can be played with this unit

The 8 cm CD adaptor on sale cannot be used with this unit. If it is used with this unit, the disc or CD player may be damaged.

  • If it is required to place CD single discs using a magazine, please purchase and use the optional CDM-608 CD single disc magazine.
  • In the case of CD, the time display and music calendar display are all for the audio section only.

Notes on handling the magazine:

  1. If the disc tray is inserted aslant into the magazine the unit will not operate.
  2. The disc must be only inserted in the magazine after it has been inserted in the tray. If it is inserted directly the unit will not operate.
    • It is not necessary to press the lock button.
  3. Always keep the magazine loaded with six-disc trays.
  4. Store magazines and discs avoiding places of direct sunlight, high temperature, and high humidity.
  5. Do not drop, apply excessive force or subject shock to the magazine or tray.
  6. Do not use benzine, paint thinner, or cleaning detergents. These may damage surfaces.

Care in handling:

  1. There are openings in the disc trays for signal reading. These openings leave part of the shiny side of the disc exposed. Be careful not to touch the shiny surface of the disc.
  2. Never put a single disc directly into the magazine through these openings.
  3. Always keep the magazine loaded with six-disc trays.
  4. When removing or inserting disc trays, hold the magazine level.
  5. Do not expose the magazine to high temperature or direct sunlight.

How to use labels

  • Be sure to put the provided labels in the designated places.
  • Placement of the labels or tape in the wrong place may cause a malfunction.
  • Note: When labeling the magazine, never put labels on top of each other.

Lighting of indicators

Notes:

  1. When the power is switched on, if a magazine and discs are already inserted, this unit will automatically start to play.
  2. Hold the magazine by the central section when inserting or removing it.
  3. When the unit is to be transported, be sure to remove the magazine pack from the main body.
  4. It will not operate if the key of a nonilluminated DISC NO. is pressed.

How to load a compact disc (for PLUS ONE tray)

Press the OPEN/CLOSE key to open the tray. Load the disc with the labeled side up.

Notes:

  1. Make sure to load the disc with the labeled side up. The disc cannot be played if it is placed upside down.
  2. Do not place objects other than discs on the disc tray.
  3. As this unit employs an auto-close function, be sure to place a disc correctly.

System connections

Make a connection as shown below. When connecting the related system components, refer also to the instruction manuals of the related components. Do not plug in the power lead until all connections are completed.

Notes:

  1. Connect all cords firmly. If connections are loose there could be loss of sound or noise produced.
  2. Do not connect up a power source that is larger than that indicated on the socket at the rear of the unit.
  3. When plugging and unplugging connection cords, be sure to first remove the power cord from the AC outlet.
  4. Plugging/unplugging connection cords without removal of the power cord can cause malfunctions or damage to the unit

System control connections

Note: When using the system control function, be sure to connect the LINE OUTPUT jacks of this unit to the input jacks of the amplifier using audio cords.

System control connection (Except for some areas

  • When connected to an amplifier or receiver having KENWOOD SYSTEM CONTROL terminals, system operation is made possible.
  • For details, refer to the instruction manual of the amplifier or receiver.
  • If your amplifier or receiver is not equipped with the SYSTEM CONTROL terminals, do not connect anything to any SYSTEM CONTROL terminal.
  • Do not connect the unit in any system configuration other than specified.

CCRS

  • By connecting the systEm COntRol jack of this unit with the “EXS” SYSTEM CONTROL jack of a KENWOOD cassette deck, CCRS recording can be carried out.
  • The CCRS function is used when recording from a compact disc to a tape in a cassette deck and operates to adjust the cassette deck’s recording level to the optimum setting according to the playing level of the compact disc.
  • For details on the CCRS function. refer to the instruction manual provided with your cassette deck.

CCRS recording

  1. Select the CD input with the input selector switch of the amplifier or receiver.
  2. Load a CD into the CD player.
  3. Insert the tape to be used for recording into the cassette deck.
  4. Select the desired DISC No. to record on the cassette deck by the Disc selector keys on this unit.
  5. Press the CCRS key on the cassette deck.

Note:

  1. In PGM (program) mode. CCRS recording cannot be performed.
  2. CCRS recording cannot be performed for multiple play of many discs. For each disc, perform the operations given in procedures 4 and 5.

Editing

  • When recording tunes from one or more CDs onto a tape, this function edits the tunes to ensure that the tunes fit within the specified tape length and that the last tune on either side does not get cut off in the middle.
  • Two edit keys, EDIT 1 and EDIT 2, allow you to edit two different discs separately.
  • This is convenient for times when you want to record two tapes in succession.
  • Set the player to TRACK mode before performing the adit generation.

Notes:

  1. If you enter a tape length different from the tape used for recording, editing will be carried out but the recorded tape may contain long unrecorded blank sections or the last tune on side A and/or B may get cut off in the middle.
  2. The EDIT function can edit up to 20 tunes.
  3. Editing will not be carried out properly with a disc which has only one track or a disc that contains a very long track (such as a classical music disc).

Time display and timer playing

To change time display
Each time you press the TIME DISPLAY key during any play mode, the time display changes in the order as below.

Note: This player stores time information for up to 20 tracks on a disc. When discs having 21 or more tracks recorded on them are played the time may not be displayed. In such a case the display may show –:–

Timer playing

  • Plug the CD player’s AC power plug into the audio timer.
  • Load a disc. Leave the CD player’s power switch turned on and set the audio timer to the desired time.
  • Play will begin from the first track on the disc. (The track mode is selected automatically when the power turns on.)

Notes:

  1. Refer to the instruction manual for the timer.
  2. Be careful of your amplifier volume setting when using an audio timer.

In case of difficulty

What appears to be a malfunction may not always be serious. If your unit should not perform as expected, consult the table below to see if the problem can be corrected before seeking help from your dealer or service representative.

Notes:

  1. Since this unit incorporates a microprocessor, external noise or interference may cause the unit to operate abnormally.
  2. If this should ever occur, press the POWER switch OFF and then press it ON again after several seconds.
