General Information
Requirements for the installation of a solar panel
The solar panel you just purchased for your above-ground pool or ground-level
pool is simple to install and effortless to operate once connected. The
installation instructions included in this manual are based on a few
assumptions:
- You have an existing above-ground pool that is completely set up and filled with water.
- Your above-ground pool is equipped with a pump-operated water filtering system.
- You have the necessary hoses needed to feed water in and out of your pool and filter system (32 mm Ø or 38 mm Ø).
These assumptions are necessary as the solar panel, once installed, will be
completely dependent upon your pool’s filter pump to push water in and through
the heater’s solar coils.
How It Works
When properly installed, the solar panel will be connected to your filter and
your pool by two hose connections: One hose will feed cold, filtered pool
water from your pump into one port of the solar panel. The other hose will
feed sun-warmed water from the other port of the solar panel to your pool via
the pool return inlet in your pool. As cold water is fed into the solar panel,
it travels through the solar coils where it is heated by the sun before it is
delivered back into your swimming pool.
The warming of the water depends on the following factors: the flow rate and
solar radiation.
Sunshine is required for the solar panel to operate. The solar panel can be
left connected even when the sun is not shining since its installation leads
to only a slight loss of pressure.
Tools & Equipment Required
The following items are not included with your new solar panel but will be
required for proper installation and operation:
-
2 Phillips screwdriver
- ¼” Flat head screwdriver
- Silicone-based lubricant
Know Your Pool
Before you begin installation it is a good idea to know certain specifications
about your pool:
- How big is your pool?
- What size hose does it use between the pool and filter pump (i.e. 32 mm Ø or 38 mm Ø)?
- What kind of hose connection does your pool use? (i.e. threaded/unthreaded)
- What location will position the collector for maximum sun exposure?
Connecting Multiple Units
DO NOT install multiple units directly into the return line. Doing so may
damage the product and will void the warranty.
To install multiple units, you MUST use a bypass valve and “T” connector with
a pressure gauge (not included, but optionally available under Article No.
060045 Bypass Set). The hose for multiple unit installations MUST be at least
38 mm in diameter. (Picture 1)
Install Instructions
Assembly Instruction
The system layouts below will help you install the solar panel(s) to your
above-ground pool:
- To assemble the solar panel two swimming-pool hoses are needed (not included in delivery): one to connect between the filtration system and the collector and one leading from the collector back to the pool
- Position the solar panel in a way that ensures maximum solar radiation (6 hrs. per day minimum). WARNING: If the filter installation is left running during the night, it is possible that it cools down the pool.
- Before setting up the solar panel, leave the panel in the sun for one hour.
Then connect the two-angle couplings and the end caps according to the installation diagram:| Large angle:
connect with the gasket ring, insert the end and turn until it is attached firmly
---|---
| Small angle:
connect with the gasket ring, insert the end and turn until it is attached firmly - Start the pump. If the collector turns cold despite the sun, everything has been installed properly.
- Solar panels are often installed on rooftops. Even if you are familiar with working on rooftops, please have the panels installed by a specialist. To prevent accidents, please make sure that safety guidelines are followed while installing solar panel on rooftops or heightened structures.
- When installing the solar panel on the ground, please make sure to position it in a way that children thereby cannot enter the pool.
Connection Possibility (Picture 2)
When connecting the main pipe and the angle, you must use one gasket ring at a
time. Turn the angle coupling until it is attached firmly (see diagram).
Assembly of small angle-coupling: (Picture 3)
Assembly of large angle-coupling: (Picture 4)
- Install the two end caps in the same way as the angle couplings.
- Always follow the assembly instructions. The solar panel will not work otherwise, furthermore, damage to the solar panel may arise which is not covered by the warranty.
- Before assembling the solar panel, please read the assembly instructions carefully.
Place the heater in a location where it will receive the greatest amount of sunlight, but keep a sufficient minimum distance from the pool. Always ensure that the solar panel faces in a SOUTHERLY direction and that solar radiation on the solar panel is unrestricted throughout the day. Make sure that the solar radiation is not disturbed by plants or other obstacles. Ensure ALL hose connections are tight and the hoses are NOT kinked or bent at severe angles. If the hoses are leaking, check to make sure ALL of the parts that have O-Rings have them attached and are screwed on tightly. DO NOT over-tighten hose clamps (15 kg max torque).
Initial Operation
Once the solar panel has been assembled and the hoses are connected to the
filter pump and pool return, unblock the flow of water into the pool return
hose and turn on the pump and filter system. Bubbles will shoot out of the
return nozzle into the pool initially while air is pushed out of the solar
panel. If this persists for longer than 2 or 3 minutes, check for and repair
any leaks in the hoses or connections.
NOTE: Be sure to place your pool cover on at night to prevent heat loss.
Troubleshooting
Problems | Possibilities/Solutions |
---|---|
The pool water is not heated. | ■ Check to make sure that water is flowing |
through the tubes.
■ Has it been sunny?
■ Use the maximum possible solar radiation and increase the running time of
the filter pump.
■ Put your pool cover on at night to prevent heat loss.
■ Additional panels may be necessary.
No initial bubbling after the panel is connected and the pump is on.| ■ Check
the setting of the filter system to make sure it is returning water to the
pool through the filter pump, then through the solar panel, and afterward
through the connection hose back to the pool.
Bubbles continue to flow out of the pool water inlet well after the
pump has been turned on.| ■ Check the connection hoses for possible damages.
■ Check if the hose clamps have been tightened enough…
Leaking heater.| ■ Check the connector seals in the pipeline system.
■ Check if the hose clamps have been tightened enough.
■ Check the connection hoses for cracks.
Important Note
Technical Data
- Max. pressure: 1 bar at 20°C
- water passage: min. 2.000 l/h; max. 10.000 l/h
NOTE: Connecting 2 or more elements requires the use of a Bypass-Kit
(sold separately).
Maintenance
The solar panel should not be exposed to cold weather. Prior to the first
frost, or at the end of your swim season, the solar panel should be removed
from its connections to the pool and stored in a frost-free location.
Winterizing
Drain all the water from the solar panel by disconnecting the tubes. Store in
a location protected from frost. Reconnect the pool return tubes. Do NOT allow
standing water inside the solar panel to freeze. Water expands as it freezes
and can rupture the solar coils on the heater.
Cleaning
Use conventional cleaning products. Do not use solvent-based or abrasive
cleaning agents/tools, i.e. no hard sponges, brushes, etc…
Storage
The product must be thoroughly dried after cleaning. After which, it is to be
stored in a dry location protected from frost.
Disposal
Disposing of packaging: The packaging material has been selected in view of
environmental concerns and disposability and is therefore recyclable. Paper
and cardboard can be recycled, as can plastic coverings. Disposing of the
product: Applicable in the European Union and other European states with
systems in place for collecting and sorting recyclable materials. Dispose of
the product in accordance with any laws and regulations applicable at your
place of residence.
Warranty conditions
The respective country’s legal provisions for warranty conditions shall apply
accordingly.
