- 1. Am I eligible for the free 5-year extended warranty?
1.Am I eligible for the free 5-year extended warranty?
There are only three conditions we require for you to register your Airthings monitor for the 5-year extended warranty.
You must:
- Purchase your monitor from an authorized reseller. Amazon is an authorized reseller. However, there are 3rd party sellers active in the Amazon marketplace who are not Airthings authorized resellers. If you want to register for the warranty, pay special attention during the purchase process to ensure it is “Sold by”
- Register on com/register within 30 days of purchase.
- Retain your proof-of-purchase. It’s best to simply upload your receipt when you register for the 5-year extended
If you experience any hardware defects during the warranty period, you need only email support@airthings.com to report the problem.
2.Does the Wave Mini detect mold spores in the air?
No. To test your home’s air for mold, the only method is by using a home test kit that you send to a lab that examines the sample for mold spores. This still cannot be done with a digital monitor.
What Wave Mini does do is track the temperature and humidity levels over time to tell you if the conditions are becoming favorable to mold growth. If the risk level increases, take action to reduce humidity. This helps keep you a step ahead of mold.
3. Why do I need Wave Mini? What will it tell me?
Wave Mini is a versatile little monitor. On one hand, it gives you visibility into your room’s air quality – specifically by measuring volatile organic chemicals (VOCs), humidity, and temperature. By measuring the changing levels of VOCs, you’ll be better able to identify and eliminate the sources of chemicals that cause you headaches, skin irritation, or other symptoms.
And keeping humidity to between 30-60% is essential for maintaining a healthy indoor environment. Consistently high humidity levels contribute to mold growth and to the
proliferation of dust mites – both of which are major allergens. Too-low humidity levels cause dry skin and irritation, especially for those with conditions like eczema.
On the other hand, it integrates a virtual sensor called Mold Risk that alerts you when conditions are becoming favorable to mold. It does not detect mold – that can’t be done with a digital monitor. However, if your home has danger areas, you can use Wave Mini to keep watch on them and alert you when you may need to take action to prevent mold from taking hold.
4. Where should I place the monitor for best results?
Wave Mini is a versatile device, so ideal placement depends on what you’re
using it for.
To monitor the air: You can use Wave Mini in any room indoors where you want
to track VOCs, temperature and humidity. For best results, avoid placing it
within 3 ft / 90 cm of vents, fans, windows or doors – sources of ventilation
can skew the readings. It’s also a good idea to place the device in the room
near to where people spend time and at an average breathing height – and never
higher than 6 ft (182 cm).
To monitor the risk for mold growth: it’s essential that you place Wave Mini
on the surface and in the center of the area where you are concerned about
mold growing. The monitor will calculate the mold risk for the area
immediately surrounding the device so it’s important the monitor be placed
inside the “danger zone”.
For both of these cases, bathrooms, laundry rooms and other utility spaces are
great places to use Wave Mini.
5. How reliable is the mold risk indication?
When Wave Mini reports a high risk for mold growth, it is not saying that
there is mold present or that mold will definitely grow, as this also depends
on surface materials in the room and other factors. What it is telling you is
that local environmental conditions (namely temperature and humidity) are
favorable for mold growth. Wave Mini’s mold detection aims to keep you one
step ahead of mold so you can take action to reduce humidity levels before
mold takes hold.
While high humidity (>60%) is a prime factor in mold growth, another important
one is the material it would grow on. Mold likes textiles and porous or
organic surfaces. While ceramic tiles offer an inhospitable surface for mold,
the grout between the tiles often provides a cozy spot for mold to grow.
6. What are VOCs and why should I care?
VOCs are volatile organic chemicals and come from an array of everyday items
including paints and varnishes, wax and cosmetics, cleaning and hobby
products, and even cooking and human breath. VOCs are not a single chemical,
rather a large and diverse group of chemicals that are airborne at room
temperature.
The level of VOCs indoors often rise and fall based on activity in the room
and the amount of ventilation. While many VOCs are harmless and normal, others
can cause headaches, dizziness, or skin and respiratory symptoms. By tracking
the changing levels, you are better able to identify sources of those that are
irritating so that you can minimize or eliminate them
1. How do I know the measurements are accurate?
Wave Mini incorporates sensors that use established technologies for VOCs, temperature and humidity. It takes air samples and updates measurements as needed every 5 minutes.
The VOC sensor needs a little explaining. Like our nose, this sensor eventually gets used to its environment. It provides an indication of the amount of VOCs relative to the “cleanest” air it has experienced in the last several days. This means that it
should experience fresh air regularly to set this baseline and thus be able to detect VOCs consistently. In ordinary circumstances, it will regularly experience clean air due to natural ventilation in the room which maintains the baseline – however, if you are in any doubt, simply open a window to introduce fresh air every once in a while or place it next to an open window for 15-20 minutes to be sure.
2.Which smart home systems is it compatible with?
Wave Mini can be used with Homey Bridge and Homey Pro smart home hub devices via Bluetooth. The data it collects can then be used to trigger flows like turning smart plugs on or off, activating smart appliances, sending SMS messages, and more.
When Wave Mini is internet-connected via the hub in a View series monitor, you can also use it with the Homey app or IFTTT for home automation. Although Airthings is working towards compatibility with the Matter standard, our devices are not yet directly compatible with systems like Apple HomeKit or Samsung SmartThings.
Compatibility with Alexa and Google Assistant is limited to voice commands. Ask your Alexa or Google Home device about the air quality in the room and it will read out the current measurements.
3.Can I check my live Wave Mini air quality readings in the app from
anywhere?
No (but it’s possible!). Let’s explain. Wave Mini is equipped with Bluetooth
and syncs the air quality data it collects to your app when your phone is
within Bluetooth range (about 30ft or 10m) and you open the app. On its own,
it’s not connected to the Internet for anytime access.
However, View Plus and other View series monitors can act as an Internet hub
for your Wave Mini. Just plug your View monitor in to activate the hub, then
use the Airthings Wave app to link Wave Mini wirelessly* to the hub. With
internet connectivity, not only will you be able to access live readings from
anywhere, but you will also receive timely notifications when air quality
declines.
Plus, you can use smart home systems like IFTTT or Homey appto create home
automation flows using sensor readingsas triggers.
