WARNING AND SECURITY RULES
Imperative charge after all deep discharge
Damage not covered under warranty
Familiarize personnel with battery installation, charging and maintenance
procedures. Display operating instructions visibly near the battery system.
Restrict access to battery area, permitting only trained personnel, to reduce
the possibility of injury.
Batteries are extremely heavy. Exercise care when handling batteries. When
lifting use appropriate mechanical equipment to safely handle batteries and
avoid injury to personnel.
Prohibit smoking. Keep away flames and sparks of all kinds from the vicinity
of storage batteries as liberated or entrapped hydrogen gas in the cells may
be exploded, causing injury to personnel and/or damage to cells.
Wear rubber apron, gloves and safety goggles (or face shield) when handling,
installing, or working on batteries. This will help to prevent injury due to
splashing or spillage of sulfuric acid. Observe all accident prevention rules.
Wash all acid splashes in eyes or on skin with plenty of clean water and seek
immediate medical assistance. Acid splashes on clothing should be washed out
with water. Acid on skin or clothing should also be immediately neutralized
with a solution of baking soda and water.
Electrolyte is highly corrosive. Promptly neutralize and remove any
electrolyte spilled when handling or installing cells. Use a baking soda/water
solution (1 lb. per gallon of water) to prevent possible injury to personnel.
Explosion and fire risk. Avoid short-circuits. Never place metal tools on top
of cells since sparks due to shorting across cell terminals may result in an
explosion of hydrogen gas in or near the cells. Insulate tool handles to
protect against shorting. Prior to making contact with the cell, discharge
static electricity by touching a grounded surface.
Dangerous voltage. Whenever possible, when making repairs to charging
equipment and/or batteries, interrupt AC & DC circuits to reduce the
possibility of injury to personnel and damage to system equipment. This is
particularly important with high voltage systems (110 volts and above).
Recycle and Dispose of Used Batteries
Used batteries contain valuable recyclable materials. They must NOT be
disposed of with domestic waste. Modes of return and recycling shall conform
to the prevailing regulations in operation at the site where the battery
system is located.
Dear customer, thank you for purchasing one of our Uniteck products. Please read all the instructions carefully and thoroughly before using the product.
DESCRIPTION
UNIBAT is a lead-acid battery with a VRLA technology and an AGM carbon
technology.
Equipped with an advanced technological design (compressed high density pure
lead grid, highly absorbent glass mat, carbon additive…), UNIBAT AGM batteries
perform up to 2 times better in cycling and lifespan than most batteries of
the same category on the market.
Thanks to their unique internal design, UNIBAT AGM batteries can accept
discharge rates of up to 80% to use the maximum of the available energy. Their
weak self-discharge guarantees a good stability over time.
Its AGM technology guarantees safe use, without leaks or gas release.
VRLA = Valve regulated Lead Acid
PRECAUTIONS BEFORE INSTALLATION
Ventilation
Valve Regulated Lead-acid batteries produce hydrogen and oxygen during their
functioning.
These gases result from electrolysis of the water portion of the electrolyte
by the charging current. Natural or artificial ventilation is recommended in
the battery room, or area, to prevent build-up. Concentrations above 4% can
result in an explosive mixture, which could be ignited by sparks from adjacent
electrical equipment as well as sparks or open flame introduced by personnel.
All air moved by ventilation should be exhausted into the outside atmosphere
and should not be allowed to re-circulate into other confined areas.
Ventilation requirements vary. Contact your local authority for requirements.
Storage location
A battery system should be installed in a clean, fresh (between 20°C and 25°C)
and dry location.
Avoid placing the battery in a warm area or in direct sunlight. Heaters,
radiators and steam pipes can cause serious electrolyte temperature variation
among cells within a battery system. The layout and contents of a battery room
must comply with all local standards and allow easy access to the batteries.
Handling
Batteries are supplied in a fully charged state and must be unpacked carefully
to avoid short-circuit between terminals of opposite polarity. The cells are
heavy and must be lifted with appropriate equipment. Avoid lifting batteries
by the terminal posts. Batteries should be lifted from bottom of jars or with
available lifting straps. At all times exercise caution when handling
batteries to prevent damage of the plastic containers.
Tools
Use tools with insulated handles. Do not place or drop metal objects onto the
battery. Remove rings, wristwatch, and metal articles of clothing which may
come into contact with the battery terminals.
Removal
Before removing old batteries, ensure that all electric loads are switched off
(breakers, fuses, and switches). Batteries must be packaged, shipped and
recycled in accordance with the regulations.
Operating temperature
All technical data are measured with an ambient temperature of 25°C.
High ambient temperatures reduce the lifespan of batteries. On the contrary,
weak temperatures reduce available capacity.
Thus, in order to make the most of Unbait batteries performances (number of
cycling, lifespan, available capacity), you need to use it in an environment
with a temperature between 20°C and 25°C.
WIRING
Wiring connection series / parallel
For the coupling, proceed as below:
NB : Cables resistors in every chain need to be the same (same section, same length).
Some advice:
-
For the parallel wiring, use the diagonal wiring for standardization of charging/discharging, with a maximum of 4 parallel chains.
-
Do not couple batteries of different ages and different technologies.
-
If there is the same capacity, prefer one powerful battery than 2 small batteries connected in parallel.
-
Spread a thin layer of contact lubricant on terminals and on roll thread. Avoid all contact with the battery box.
Distance inter-batteries
When they are functioning batteries produce heat. In order to reduce those
effects on performances, it is recommended not to stick batteries together.
Make sure you have at least from 0.5 to 2cm between each battery.
Tightening
Tighten terminals screws according to the tightening torque mentioned below:
23.5~25.5 Nm or 240-260 Kgf-cm
A wrong tightening can interfere with your charger or your charging system. It
means that it can create irregular performances and/or damage your battery.
Once all bolts are well tightened, put the isolator cap to protect against all
accidental contacts.
WARNING BEFORE USING
Initial capacity
As all lead-acid batteries, after production, UNIBAT battery does not offer
its full storage capacity (initial capacity 90-100%). Its full capacity will
be reached only after a few cycles of full charging (it depends on the using
frequency during the first 6 months).
Imperative charging after deep discharging
Be careful, it is hardly recommended not to leave a lead-acid battery in deep discharge state more than 24h. To avoid damaging your battery in an irreversible way you absolutely need to recharge it at 100%.
Overcharge prohibited
The charge does not have to exceed 15V. An overcharge can damage in an irreversible way the battery and cancel the warranty.
Maintenance free battery
UNIBAT batteries have VRLA technology (Valve Regulated Lead acid). There is no need to add liquid, that is the main difference with liquid lead batteries. UNIBAT batteries are completely hermetic. If you open the battery you cancel the warranty.
Bubble and/or crackling during charging
Crackling or bubbles is a common phenomenon on all technologies for lead
batteries (Liquid, AGM, GEL).
It is caused by the current going from the electrolyte of positive plate to
negative plate. It often appears at 13.8V, and it is intensified by the
current and/or by some charging curves with throb charging steps.
This noise is more intense during the first charges, it is when the battery
increases its capacity. It can be softened with time.
Warning: the same phenomenon can also come from a charging issue. It is the
case when the noise is present with tensions higher than 15.5V. It is a
problem from voltage regulation or too powerful charge from your charging
system (alternator/battery charger, solar…). If it happens, disconnect your
charging system and make appropriate corrections.
CHARGING STEPS
In order to completely enjoy UNIBAT batteries storage capacity and power performance, it is recommended to charge at least in 3 steps: bulk/boost (main charge), absorption (equalization), float.
Bulk/boost Current (A) = 25% of the capacity (max 40%)
| A constant current of 25% of the capacity is recommended until the
equalization voltage is reached. At the end of this step, the battery is
charged at 80- 90%.
---|---
Absorption / Equalization Charging current (A) = 20% of the capacity Charging voltage = 14,4V (accepted: 14,1-14,7V)
| The voltage of the battery reaches its equalization voltage and it is stabilized. The current is reducing.
Floating / maintenance charging Current (A) = 0,5% of the capacity End of charging voltage = – with charger = 13,2V-13,7V – with Solar = 13,6-13,9V
| The battery is charged. Charging voltage is reduced and a low current must be delivered in order to offset the battery self-discharge.
Those 3 steps are minimum steps you need to follow in order to ensure a 100% charge for an occasional use. For regular and intensive charge, it is recommended using multi-steps evolved chargers (cf UNICHARGE chargers or UNIMPPT charge controller). Thanks to it you can completely enjoy your batteries performances (cycling number, lifespan)
Threshold voltage adjustment according to ambient temperature
Charging voltage data are indicated for an ambient temperature of 25°C. Below
this temperature it is recommended to adjust voltage threshold at +/- 30mV per
degree.
Ex.: Ambient temperature of 35°C = 35°C – 25°C x 0,003V = voltage must be
reduced by 0.03V.
CHARGING STATUS CHECK
Checking voltage during rest
Open circuit voltage (OCV) varies according to ambient temperature and
remaining capacity of the battery. In general, open circuit voltage is
determined by the specific gravity of the electrolyte. Open circuit voltage is
the voltage of an accumulator which is without external consumers (not under
load).
The measurement of the open circuit voltage needs to be taken either 24 hours
after a full charge, or at least 10 minutes after discharge. This measurement
allows an approximation of the residual capacity.
See bellow Unibat batteries data:
0°C | 10°C | 25°C | 30°C | 40°C |
---|---|---|---|---|
100% | 13,01 V | 12,96 V | 12,90 V | 12,88 V |
90% | 12,89 V | 12,84 V | 12,78 V | 12,76 V |
80% | 12,74 V | 12,69 V | 12,63 V | 12,61 V |
70% | 12,60 V | 12,56 V | 12,50 V | 12,48 V |
60% | 12,48 V | 12,44 V | 12,37 V | 12,35 V |
50% | 12,33 V | 12,29 V | 12,23 V | 12,21 V |
40% | 12,21 V | 12,17 V | 12,10 V | 12,08 V |
30% | 12,06 V | 12,02 V | 11,96 V | 11,94 V |
20% | 11,94 V | 11,90 V | 11,83 V | 11,81 V |
10% | 11,81 V | 11,76 V | 11,70 V | 11,68 V |
As mentioned, the voltage when the battery is rested give an approximative idea of the remaining capacity. It is a specific indication only given by Unibat batteries. Indeed, with other batteries, the fact the voltage is higher does not guarantee a higher capacity. The only way to know the real capacity of your battery is to charge it then unload it and to measure its restored capacity with a tester such as EMROL ones.
ADAPTED CURRENT INVERTER
In order to preserve your battery against excessive discharges it is imperative to use a current inverter adapted to your battery capacity.

PERFORMANCE
Number of cycle
Capacity retention
Number of cycle is determined according to:
- Unload velocity is made in C10 it means 10% of battery capacity per hour,
- Then one complete charge is made.
- Maximum number of cycles is reached as soon as returned capacity represent 80%. After this rate, the battery can still make cycles, but it cannot be taken into account in its cycling calculation.
NB : DOD XX% means Depth Of Discharge XX% = unload at XX%
Capacity according to temperature
A low temperature reduces remaining capacity.
For example, for a temperature of -10°C with an unload rate of 20% of the
capacity (0,2C), the available capacity will be 70%.
Also, in order to completely enjoy Unibat batteries performances, it is
recommended to have an ambient temperature between 20 and 25°C.
Self-consumption
The self-consumption is more important with high temperature.
Also, in order to avoid deep unload after period of non-use, it is recommended
to charge your battery regularly (every 3-6 months).
