INSTALLATION, COMMISSIONING AND NETWORKING

6.1 Selection of the installation site
Note: The installation locations for smoke alarms are bindingly regulated in the application standard DIN EN 14676 valid for Germany.

  1. For comprehensive protection, smoke alarms should be installed in all rooms, corridors, storage areas, cellars and storerooms. In rooms larger than 40 m² or corridors longer than 10 m, the use of several smoke alarms is recommended.

  2. You should at least meet the minimum protection and equip every bedroom and children’s room as well as all corridors that serve as escape routes with a smoke alarm device. (see figure E)

  3. For optimal protection, install at least one smoke alarm in all rooms and corridors. (see figure E)

  4. Since smoke rises, smoke alarms must always be mounted on the ceiling, if possible in the centre of the room in a horizontal position. According to DIN EN 14676, there must be at least 0.5 m distance to all furnishings on the ceiling and to the walls.

  5. If ceiling mounting is not possible (e.g. in roof peaks), the smoke alarm can be installed on the wall. The distance to the ceiling should be between 30 and 50 cm.

  6. If the room height is more than 6 m, use an additional smoke alarm.

  7. In corridors and hallways with a maximum width of 3 m, the distance between two smoke detectors may be max. 15 m. The distance between the detector and the end face of the  corridor or hallway must not exceed 7.5 m. In intersections, junctions and corner areas of corridors and hallways, one smoke detector must be installed in each case.

  8. In the case of galleries, an additional smoke alarm device is required below if the gallery has a total area of more than 16 m² and the length and width are more than 2 m. (see figure C)

  9. For rooms with sloping roofs: (see figure D)
    a) If the slope of the ceiling is > 20 ° to the horizontal, then the smoke alarm must be installed in the range of 50-100 cm from the highest point.
    b) If the horizontal ceiling is less than 1 m wide, then install the smoke alarm on the slope of the roof.
    c) If the horizontal ceiling is wider than 1 m, mount the smoke alarm device centrally on the horizontal ceiling.

  10. For rooms with a joist (e.g. beams):
If a joist extends downwards up to 20 cm from the ceiling, this is irrelevant for the selection of the installation location for the smoke alarm.
For joists higher than 20 cm, the following applies: If the sum of the ceiling bays separated by joists is
    a) larger than 36 square metres, a smoke alarm must be installed
    b) up to 36 square metres, a smoke alarm device must be installed in the middle of all ceiling bays.

Detector - fig 2 6.2 Distance to sources of interference
This unit uses 868 MHz radio technology, the range indoors may differ greatly from that in the open field. Apart from the transmitting power and receiving characteristics of the receivers, environmental influences such as humidity play an important role in addition to structural conditions on site.
The range can be reduced, sometimes considerably, by:

  • Walls made of wood, plaster, concrete, reinforced concrete
  • Proximity to metallic and conductive objects
  • Broadband interference, e.g. in residential areas (DECT telephones, mobile phones, radio headsets, radio loudspeakers, radio weather stations, baby monitoring systems)
  • Proximity to electric motors, transformers, power supplies, computers

6.3 Installation locations to avoid

  1. Do not install smoke alarms in draught-prone areas, e.g. near air conditioning and ventilation inlets/outlets, air conditioning units and fans.
  2. In bathrooms, shower rooms or rooms where the temperature exceeds 39 °C or falls below 0 °C. (see figure F)
  3. Not in the peak of a roof, as smoke-free air could accumulate in the event of a fire.
  4. In kitchens, garages, laundry rooms or boiler rooms, cooking fumes, vehicle exhaust, dust and moisture can trigger a false alarm.
  5. In very dusty or dirty areas. Dirt and dust can accumulate in the smoke alarm and impair the functional safety.
  6. At a distance of less than 1.50 m from fluorescent lamps.

6.4 Installation and commissioning of the smoke alarm device Installation
Warning! To avoid accidents, install the smoke alarm device in accordance with the
Mounting requirements Mount correctly on the ceiling.
Caution! Risk of electric shock!
Make sure that you do not damage any live wires in the wall during installation.
The unit is equipped with a mounting plate that allows ceiling mounting. The enclosed fixing material is suitable for concrete ceilings. For other surfaces, the appropriate fixing material must be obtained from a specialist dealer.

  • Select a suitable mounting position for the unit in the room to be monitored.
  • Remove the unit from the mounting plate. (see figure G)
  • Mark the drill holes on the ceiling using the mounting plate with a pencil. (see illustration G)
  • Drill the marked holes (5 mm drill, approx. 25-30 mm deep for concrete ceilings / 2.5 mm drill approx. 20 mm deep for wooden panelling or beams) and insert the dowels. (see figure G)
  • Screw down the mounting plate.
  • Place the unit on the mounting plate and secure it clockwise.

Commissioning

  • Before putting the smoke alarm into operation, it is important to activate it and test it for correct functioning.
  • Slide the activation switch to the right with a screwdriver (see figure B) or secure the mounting plate clockwise. When the smoke alarm is activated, the device LED and the LED on the underside of the device light up briefly.
  • Test the correct activation of your smoke alarm by pressing the test button. If no signal is generated, the smoke alarm is not properly activated and should not be used.

6.5 Activating networking
Note: Only smoke alarms of the same manufacturer and type can be networked.

  1. Select a smoke alarm device as a reference device. Mark the device with the enclosed label in a visible place. In case of possible device extensions, you must know which of the installed devices is the reference device in the context of networking.
  2. Switch the reference device into connection mode by pressing the test button 3 times quickly.
  3. The red LED on the bottom of the unit lights up, followed by the blue LED. This indicates that the smoke alarm is in connection mode. The smoke alarm remains in connection mode for approx. 30 seconds.
  4. Switch the next smoke alarm device into connection mode by pressing the test button 3 times quickly.
  5. The red LED on the bottom of the device lights up, followed by the green LED. This indicates that the smoke detectors are connected to each other.
  6. Repeat steps 2 to 5 to connect more smoke alarms. Make sure that you always use the same reference device.
  7. Test whether the smoke alarm has been connected successfully by pressing the test button of a random device until it beeps. The red device LED of all networked devices flashes twice per second for five minutes. You can end the test prematurely by pressing the test button of each smoke alarm once.

Note: Once you replace or exchange the reference device, you must re- network all smoke detectors connected to the original reference device. You can select any device as the new reference device.
6.6 Deactivating the networking

  1. Deactivate the networking by releasing the smoke alarm you wish to reset from the mounting plate by turning it anticlockwise or by pressing the activation switch to the left with a screwdriver.
  2. Press and hold the test button and activate the smoke alarm again by pressing the activation switch to the right.
  3. Press and hold the test button while the device LED lights up red and release the button when the LED goes out.
  4. When the unit LED lights up again, press the test button once more.
  5. The unit LED flashes to indicate that the network is being deleted.
  6. When the flashing has stopped, the network has been successfully deleted.
  7. Repeat steps 1 to 6 to disconnect the network from other smoke detectors.

OPERATION OF THE RADIO SMOKE DETECTOR

7.1 Normal operation
In normal operation, the unit LED flashes once every 40 seconds.
7.2 Function test
Caution: Possible hearing damage!
The smoke alarm emits a very loud and shrill alarm tone that can damage your hearing.
Therefore, keep a minimum distance of 50 cm when testing the function.
It is recommended to test the unit and the inter-unit networking weekly to ensure proper functioning.

  • Press and hold the test button for approx. 4 seconds until the alarm sounds. The alarm signal sounds 1x per second for a total of 3x in succession. After a pause of 1.5 seconds, the alarm pattern is repeated until the test button is released. If no signal or a different signal sounds, there is a defect or the battery is exhausted. The unit LED flashes in the same pattern.
  • The red device LED of all networked devices flashes twice per second for five minutes. You can end the test prematurely by pressing the test button of each smoke alarm once.

Note: If the function test is not successful, replace the unit.
7.3 Alarm function
When the smoke detector triggers the alarm, a continuous signal sounds. The alarm signal of the triggering device sounds 1x per second for a total of 3x in succession. After a pause of 1.5 seconds, the alarm pattern is repeated until no more smoke particles are detected. The unit LED flashes in the same pattern. The alarm signal of the networked devices sounds 2x per second after a short delay time.
Note: When the alarm signal is emitted, check whether a fire has broken out. In case of fire, leave the building immediately and call the fire brigade.
7.4 Mute function
If the smoke alarm triggers an unwanted alarm, e.g. due to cooking fumes, dirt or similar, the alarm of the smoke alarm can be silenced or the alarm acknowledged for approx. 10 minutes via the test button. After pressing the test button (approx. 1 second), the red device LED flashes every 8 seconds to indicate that the smoke alarm is muted. The sensitivity is minimised to such an extent that there is no longer a false alarm.
This desensitisation of the smoke chamber is automatically cancelled after 10 minutes. The smoke alarm has its normal sensitivity again.
Warning! Before using the mute function, you should always determine the cause of the alarm and be sure that there is no real danger.
Mute:
Note: The muting must be done at the smoke detector that triggered the alarm.
The networked devices fall silent shortly afterwards and cannot be muted themselves.
7.5 Error warning function
If the smoke alarm does not function properly, it switches to the error warning function. If a fault condition is detected, a beep sounds every 40 seconds. Try cleaning the smoke alarm (see chapter 8 “Maintenance and care”) or replace the smoke alarm.
7.6 Low battery warning/end of unit life warning
If a signal sounds every 40 seconds and the unit LED flashes in the same pattern, the unit indicates that the battery is low for up to 30 days. For the networked units, a signal sounds every 3 hours. Here, too, the device LED flashes in the same pattern.
This smoke alarm is equipped with a non-replaceable battery. When this warning occurs, replace the device as soon as possible!
Warning! The acoustic warning signal can be silenced for ten hours by pressing the test button. The smoke alarm is still fully functional and able to detect smoke in this mode.
Important: This smoke alarm device should be replaced after 10 years.
