  • In the second stage: Adding 600# emery grit and ceramic abrasive with 3th speed can fine the rock surface.
  • In the third stage: Adding 1200# emery grit and ceramic abrasive with 2th slower speed will make the rock smoother.
  • In the fourth stage: Adding brightening powder and ceramic abrasive with the lowest 1th speed can increase the brightness of rocks.

Polishing Your Gemstones

  1. 1. Unscrew the black knob at the top of the barrel and remove it.

  2. 2. Detach the outer stainless steel cover. You may need to use something flat -like a regular screwdriver or cutlery handle – to pry it loose.

  3. 3. Remove the inner lid from the barrel: You can try by squeezing the barrel to push out the lid or screw the knob onto the lid and use that as a handle to pull out the lid easily.

  4. Start by putting your rocks inside the tumbler barrel. ( One box of ten gems; Round abrasive 350g; and water 3/5 full) Don’t overload it! If the tumbler barrel is too full, the rocks won’t move around enough to become polished. We recommend that you fill the barrel 1/2 to 2/3 full.
Please note: If you overfill the barrel, the machine will automatically turn off, and the screen will display ‘E’ and ‘1 ‘. If this happens, turn off the machine by pressing the on/Off button, remove some of the contents of the barrel, and then turn it on again.

  5. Empty the contents of the grit #1 packet into the barrel.

  6. Add water to the barrel until the water just covers the top of the rocks.

  7. Insert the lid back into the barrel in the sealed position (with the screw pointed (Remove the knob from the inner lid, if you attached it by step 3).

  8. Press half of the sealing ring on the inclined side first.

  9. Push the seal ring on the other edge.VEVOR ‎KD-C1011 Direct Drive Rock Tumbler-fig- \(5\)

  10. After confirming the push seal ring, the seal ring is inside the polishing barrel.

  11. Put back the stainless steel cover on top of the inner lid and reattach the knob and tighten it. Make sure to tighten the best as you can to ensure the barrel does not leak any water.

  12. Place the tumbler barrel onto the tumbler base, with the lid facing to the right.

  13. Plug in the machine, press the On/Off button and select the appropriate number of days and speed (refer to the Tumbling Cycles Guide on page 4), and let the machine do its job! You can always pause the machine without losing the speed and timer settings by pressing the Pause/Resume button. Press it again to resume.
    Cycle Change

  14. When the tumble cycle is done, pour out the tumbler barrel into the mesh strainer and rinse the rocks and barrel with water to remove all the grit.

  • Caution! Never pour used grit down a drain inside your house – it can destroy the plumbing! Make sure to wash your stones and barrel outside instead of in your bathroom or kitchen.
  • Check before you discard! The purpose of each grit cycle is to gradually smooth the rocks and round out the edges. Whenever you finish a cycle, it’s a good idea to wash off just a few of the rocks first to see if they are tumbled to your satisfaction before you dump the contents of the barrel. If they aren’t polished enough, return them into the barrel and let the cycle run longer. In general, the longer the cycle, the better the results.
  • Trust yourself. Use your own judgment to determine if the rocks are polished to your satisfaction. Some rocks are harder than others, so they may need more time in any grit cycle than is recommended here.
  • 15.Repeat the above steps with grits #2-4,in order. By doing so, you will bit-by-bit polish the rough rocks into smooth gemstones.
  • Feel free to experiment with the duration of your tumbling. Each rock you use is made of different material and so will respond differently. This is a great hobby to inspire experimentation!

Next Steps

  • Use mineral oil for extra shine! If you want your finished stones to be really shiny, coat and polish the stones with mineral oil.
  • You can use the included jewelry hardware to make a necklace, ring, keychain, and a pair of clip-on earrings or pins with your polished stones.
  • To make a keychain or necklace, simply insert the stone into the keychain/necklace cages, without using glue, by forcing it into the cage.
  • To make a ring or earrings, you’ll need to glue the stone by using a hot glue gun or an all-purpose adhesive sealant. Please have an adult help you if you are using glue!

Imitating Nature

  • The original rock tumbler is all natural – it’s water! If you’ve ever picked up stones on the beach or near a river, you know what this means. Those rocks have been smoothed and rounded by water over long periods of time to make them look and feel the way they do.

  • Here’s how it works: Over tens, hundreds, and even thousands of years, rocks get tossed around in the waves and currents of rivers and seas, banging against each other. The sand and sediment act as abrasives and further smooth the
rocks. When the rocks are wet, the sheen gives stones a highly polished look. Since the beginning of civilization, humanity has tried to find ways to polish stones faster than nature. In ancient Egypt, slaves would take roughly-cut rocks and move them back and forth in troughs filled with sand and water – a process that took months – to achieve polished stones.

  • In India, stones cUt into preliminary shapes were put in goatskin bags with water and roughly-ground rocks. Then, workers would roll the bag on the ground for weeks at a time.

  • Perhaps the first rock tumbler “machine” was invented in ancient India, where a teeter- totter board rolled jars flied with pre-cut beads, water, and abrasives to create polished beads.

  • The problem with all of these methods is that they took extremely long amounts of time to achieve results and only a few rocks could be polished at once.

More Successful Methods

  • Modern rock tumbling began in the 1950s in Los Angeles. A rock dealer named Edward Swoboda started selling hand polished rregular shaped rocks – called baroque stones – in simple settings. Which become very popular TO keep Up with demand, he partnered with a friend, Warren Jones, to build a tumbling machine that was able to polish a larger quantity of stones in a short amount of time and with little labor.
  • Spurred by Swoboda’s success, other inventors started producing their own versions of tumbler machines that, over time, became quieter, more durable, and able to polish larger numbers of rocks, even large enough to support wholesale efforts. By the early 1960s, a rock polishing craze had taken over the U.S. and rock tumbler machines could be found in homes across the country.

What Can You DO With Polished Stones?

You’ve spent the past month polishing stones. Now what? Besides simply enjoying looking at them, there is a lot you can do:

  • Jewelry: The most common use of polished rocks is to make jewelry. You can use the jewelry fasteners included in this kit, or you can do it yourself! Wrap a flexible wire around a single stone to create a pendant that can go on a chain, string or ribbon to create a necklace. Or, you can go to a craft store and buy materials to create keychains, earring, pins, rings and more.
  • Home decor: You also can use the polished rocks to create beautiful decorations for your home. For instance, you can glue the rocks to picture frames, magnets or tree ornaments. You can use larger stones to accent flower pots or vases. YoU can fill a jar with rocks and create a candle holder. Use your imagination!
