The RIM-7 Sea Sparrow Program is a program that requires rugged commercial- off-the-shelf (COTS) control solutions with specific I/O requirements. These solutions need to be easily deployed within existing and new Sea Sparrow/ESSM launchers and radar systems. The program requires support for MIL-STD-1553, proprietary digital control, and high-voltage analog signals. The control systems also need to be able to support the hardened and secure VxWorks operating system.

WHAT IS THE RIM-7 SEA SPARROW PROGRAM?
Raytheon’s RIM-7 Sea Sparrow and guided Evolved Sea Sparrow Missile (ESSM®, developed in conjunction with NATO) are ship-borne short-range anti-aircraft and anti-missile defense systems. They are designed to be lightweight “point- defense” weapons, easily retrofitted to existing ships to replace dated anti- aircraft armament technology. Raytheon was struggling to secure control system solutions for these launchers and their radar interfaces as major vendors were unable to meet supply demands. UEI has gone to great lengths to shore up an inventory of data acquisition (DAQ) and control hardware to meet the urgent needs of top defense contractors and the armed services they support.
THE IMMEDIATE CHALLENGES
- Raytheon needed rugged commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) control solutions that met specific I/O requirements and could be easily deployed within existing and new Sea Sparrow/ESSM launchers and radar systems. This includes MIL-STD-1553, proprietary digital control, and high-voltage analog signals.
- Control systems had to be able to support the hardened and secure VxWorks operating system.
- All hardware and I/O had to be in stock and ready to ship in quantity.

- With over 90+ I/O boards available COTS, UEI provided Raytheon with the right digital I/O and power conversion products to ensure dependable launcher and radar operation. Since our industrial products are the same as those deployed, this accelerated the design and validation of the final systems – Raytheon prototyped with the industrial while we prepared the deployed systems.
- Due to UEI’s supply of product, all hardware and I/O were immediately available, and UEI was able to work with Raytheon to quickly develop and ship these solutions. UEI adapted existing hardware to fulfill the high voltage needs – and gained two new products as a result.
