Introduction

Thank you and congratulations on the purchase of your new D-Link Media Converter Series device.

These standalone plug-and-play converters offer increased flexibility when networking media technologies. The Media Converter Series is divided into two types of models. The DMC-300SC, 515SC, 530SC, and 920 series convert a copper Fast Ethernet connection to a fiber optic Fast Ethernet connection. The DMC- 810SC, 805G, 700SC, and 1910 series provide Gigabit Ethernet to Gigabit fiber optic conversion, ideal for expanding more demanding, high-speed networks.

The D-Link Media Converter Series offers network administrators a variety of solutions to expand networks over a greater distance while maintaining compatibility with existing network equipment.

Features

The Media Converter Series is designed for easy installation, increased networking flexibility, and high performance. Plug-and-play functionality means these media converters are also low maintenance, requiring no additional management after installation. Installation

This chapter provides step-by-step instructions on how to install your D-Link Media Converter.

Before Installing the Media Converter

As with any electrical device, you should place the equipment where it will not be subjected to extreme temperatures, humidity, or electromagnetic interference. Specifically, the site you select should meet the following requirements:

  1. The ambient temperature should be between 0 to 40 °C (32 to 104 °F).
  2. The environment’s relative humidity should be less than 90%, non-condensing.
  3. Surrounding electrical devices should not exceed the electromagnetic field (RFC) standards for IEC 801-3, Level 2 (3V/M) field strength.
  4. Make sure that the equipment is receiving sufficient ventilation. Do not block the ventilation grates on each side of the converter or the fan exhaust port on the side or rear of the equipment.
  5. The power outlet should be within 1.8 meters of the converter.
Standalone Installation

The D-Link media converters are primarily standalone plug-and-play devices. To use the converter, simply plug the supplied power adapter’s DC-jack into the power connector on the back panel of the converter and connect the adapter to a standard AC power outlet. The converter will be ready to use and requires no additional configuration or software. Once the device is powered, the module is ready to be connected to the network using the appropriate Ethernet and fiber optic cables.

  • Step 1: Connect the DC power plug to the back of the converter.
  • Step 2: Connect the power adapter to a power outlet.
  • Step 3: Connect the copper and fiber cables to the front panel connectors.
Rack Installation

All of D-Link’s media converters can be conveniently mounted in the specially designed DMC-1000 chassis. To install your converter into the chassis, you will need to remove the device from its original housing and install it into the chassis. The following steps will explain you how to install your converter into the chassis.

  • Step 1 : Unscrew and remove the media converter board from its original housing using the thumbscrew on the converter’s front panel.
  • Step 2: Unscrew and remove the bay cover from any of the vacant slots in the DMC-1000 chassis.
  • Step 3: Place the media converter board into the vacant slot and secure it using the thumbscrew on the converter board.

Management

  • Monitoring the Media Converter
    • All of the media converters feature a set of front panel LEDs that provide real-time feedback on the status of your device. You can also monitor and manage the media converter(s) that are installed in the DMC-1000 chassis by using the dedicated DMC-1002 Management Module. This module allows the attached media converter(s) to be controlled through the web UI, SNMP, or a terminal emulation program. It also lets you perform various control functions, such as changing the LLR and fiber mode settings.
  • Link Passthrough Functionality
    • The media converters feature intelligent troubleshooting mechanisms that assist network administrators to quickly diagnose connection problems in the network.
  • Link Loss Carry Forward (LLCF)
    • When the copper connection between a connected device and the media converter is lost, the converter’s fiber port will disconnect the transmission link so that the receiving media converter in the configuration knows that there is a connection problem on the opposite end. Similarly, when the signal to the fiber port is lost, the media converter will disconnect the copper link. It will then carry the link loss signal over to the management hub so that the administrator can easily identify the source of the problem. The LLCF feature is always enabled by default.
  • Link Loss Return (LLR)
    • This is only available on the DMC-920 Series and 1000 Mbps media converter models. When the fiber link between a connected device and the media converter is lost, the converter’s fiber port will stop transmitting and will return a “no link” signal to its linked partner device.
    • There is a switch to manually enable or disable this function on the media converter board. Consult the chapter “DIP Switches” on page 13 and 14 for more information.
Dual Wavelength Transmission

The DMC-920 series and DMC-1910 series media converters have the ability to combine both transmitting and receiving signals onto a single fiber strand by making use of two different wavelengths. One module uses one wavelength to transmit data and another wavelength to receive data, while the partner module flips that relationship. For example, if one module has a transmit (Tx) wavelength of 1310 nm and a receive (Rx) wavelength of 1550 nm, the converter on the other end will have a Tx wavelength of 1550 nm and Rx of 1310 nm. For this reason, the DMC-920R and DMC-920T, and DMC-1910R and DMC-1910T are sold as a pair, for 100 Mbps and 1000 Mbps connections respectively.

DIP Switches

The 1000 Mbps media converters are equipped with two on-board DIP switches for controlling the Link Loss Return (LLR) and fiber mode functions while the 10/100 Mbps models feature a single DIP switch for setting the duplex mode.

1000 Mbps models

  • Switch 1
    • Fiber Mode: This switch allows you to set the fiber optic mode to Forced (On) or Auto-Negotiation (Off). Forced allows you to manually set the duplex mode to half or full while Auto-Negotiation lets the media converter decide which duplex mode to use, based on the receiving transmission. Make sure that the device at the opposite end is using the same mode.
    • When using two or more media converters at the same time, the fiber mode must be set to Forced. This switch is set to Auto-Negotation (off) by default.
  • Switch 2 – LLR:
    • This switch lets you enable or disable the LLR function on the media converter. When you are using more than one media converter at the same time, LLR should only be enabled on one converter. This is to prevent the devices from creating a feedback loop. This switch is set to LLR disabled (off) by default.
Switch 1: Fiber Mode On -> Forced mode

10/100 Mbps models

The 10/100 Mbps media converters have a single DIP switch for setting the duplex mode on the media converter’s fiber port. This can be set to half- duplex or full-duplex. This switch is set to full-duplex by default.

DMC-920 Series

The 10/100 Mbps DMC-920 series features a unique set of six DIP switches for configuring several settings for the copper and fiber port of the media converter. Refer to the description below for more information.

  • Switch 1
    • Fiber Duplex Mode: This switch allows you to set the duplex mode for the fiber port. Turning this switch on sets the port to operate on half-duplex mode, while turning the switch off forces it to use full-duplex.
  • Switch 2
    • Copper Mode: This switch allows you to set the copper port to Forced (On) or Auto-Negotiation (Off). Forced allows you to manually set the duplex mode to half or full while Auto-Negotiation lets the media converter decide which duplex mode to use based on the receiving transmission. Make sure that the device at the opposite end is using the same mode. When using two or more media converters at the same time, the copper mode must be set to Forced. This switch is set to Auto-Negotation (off) by default.
  • Switch 3
    • Copper Speed: This switch lets you set the speed of the copper port. Turning this switch on limits the speed to 10 Mbps, while turning it off sets it to 100 Mbps.
  • Switch 4
    • Copper Duplex Mode: This switch allows you to set the duplex mode for the copper port. Turning this switch on sets the port to operate using half-duplex while turning the switch off sets it to use full-duplex.
  • Switch 5
    • LLR: This switch lets you enable or disable the LLR function on the media converter. When you are using more than one converter at the same time, LLR should only be enabled on one converter. This is to prevent the devices from creating a feedback loop. This switch is set to LLR disabled (off) by default.
  • Switch 6
    • LLCF: This switch lets you enable or disable the LLCF function on the media converter. When you are using more than one converter at the same time, LLCF should only be enabled on one converter. This is to prevent the devices from creating a feedback loop. This switch is set to LLCF disabled (off) by default.
