Installation Guide

Safety

IMPORTANT: A licensed electrician must install the COVE EVSE. This document contains important instructions & warnings that must be followed when installing and maintaining COVE.

Warnings

Warning: Read all instructions before starting installation.
Warning: Do not attempt to disassemble, repair, tamper with, or modify COVE. Contact EverCharge for guidance on any repairs or modifications.
Warning: For permanently connected (hardwired) charging stations, COVE must be installed by a trained and licensed electrician and in accordance with all local electrical codes and ordinances.
Warning: High voltage.
Warning: COVE must be grounded through a permanent wiring system or an equipment grounding conductor.
Warning: Turn off input power at the circuit breaker before installing or cleaning COVE.
Warning: Never spray water or any other liquid directly at the wall mounted control box.
Warning: Stop using and do not use COVE if it is defective, fails to operate, or appears cracked, frayed, broken, or otherwise damaged.
Warning: Do not install or use COVE near flammable, explosive, harsh, or combustible materials, chemicals, or vapors.
Warning: Use COVE only within the specified operating parameters.
Warning: Do not touch COVE’s end terminals with fingers or sharp metallic objects, such as wire, tools, or needles.
Warning: Do not insert any foreign objects into any part of COVE.
Warning: When transporting COVE, handle with care. Do not subject it to strong force or impact or pull, twist, tangle, drag, fold, or step on any part of COVE, to prevent damage to it or any of its components.
Warning: Use of COVE may affect or impair the operation of any medical or implantable electronic devices, such as an implantable cardiac pacemaker or an implantable cardioverter defibrillator. Check with your electronic device manufacturer concerning effects that charging may have on such electronic devices before using COVE.
Warning: Adult supervision is required when using near children.
Warning: Ensure that the COVE charging cord is positioned so it will not be stepped on, tripped over, or subject to damage or stress. Do not drive over the charging cord or allow any garage door to close on the charging cord.

Cautions

Caution: Do not operate COVE in temperatures outside its operating range of -22°F to 122°F (-30°C to +50°C).
Caution: Do not use private power generators as a power source for charging.
Caution: Incorrect installation and testing of COVE could potentially damage either the vehicle’s battery and/or COVE itself. Any resulting damage is excluded from the Charging Equipment Limited Warranty.

Specifications

Care and Maintenance

• Ensure that COVE charging cable is positioned so it will not be stepped on, driven over, tripped on, or subjected to damage or stress.
• Do not use cleaning solvents to clean any of COVE’s components. The outside of COVE, the charging cable, and the connector end of the charging cable should be periodically wiped with a clean, dry cloth to remove accumulation of dirt and dust.

System Overview

IMPORTANT: A licensed electrician must install the COVE EVSE.

Minimum Requirements

Installation of COVE requires that you:

• Refer to NEC code 210.19(A)(1)(a) and NEC table 310.15(B)(16) to ensure less than 3% voltage drop as well as determine correct OCPD and conductor sizing at 125% for a continuous load.

• Obtain any necessary permits from the local authority that has jurisdiction and confirm that the follow-up inspection has been scheduled by an electrician after the installation
  is complete.

• Use only copper conductors.

• Use conductors that are sized in accordance with local wiring regulations. The selected cable must be able to sustain periods of constant load of up to the maximum amperage selected by the electrician.

• Use protective devices. The circuit protection device chosen must incorporate overcurrent protection in relation to the electrical load selected.

• Mount at least 18 inches above the floor inside, 24 inches outdoors. Suggested mounting height is 38.5 inches from the bottom.

Note: Consult with an electrician to ensure that the installation meets local regulations.

Service Wiring

Warning: COVE is a single phase device.
Warning: Before installing COVE, identify the type of utility service connection available on site.
Caution: The two phases used must each measure 120V to neutral. Earth Ground must be connected to neutral at only one point, usually at the breaker panel.
Caution: If a 240V three-phase feed is from a Delta-connected secondary, the leg used must have a center tap. This center tap must be grounded. Only the two phases on either side of the center tapped leg can be used.

Only three wires are connected, but care must be taken that the service transformer secondary connection is definitely known, and that the three wires from the main circuit breaker panel are correctly connected and labeled.

Note: The L1, L2, and ground outputs labeled on illustrations correspond to the inputs on COVE. Note: Illustrations in this document are for demonstration purposes only.

GROUND CONNECTION

Grounding instructions for a grounded, cord connected product:
This product must be grounded. If it should malfunction or break down, grounding provides a path of least resistance for electric current to reduce the risk of electric shock. This product is equipped with a cord having an equipment grounding conductor and a grounding plug. The plug must be plugged into an appropriate outlet that is properly installed and grounded in accordance with all local codes and ordinances.

Grounding instructions for a permanently connected product:
This product must be connected to a grounded, metal, permanent wiring system, or an equipment grounding conductor must be run with the circuit conductors and connected to the equipment grounding terminal or lead on the product. The charge station requires 208-240V across two legs. The charge station must be connected to a grounded, metal, permanent wiring system via the equipment grounding terminal on the EVSE.

Warning: Improper connection of the equipment-grounding conductor is able to result in a risk of electric shock. Check with a qualified electrician or serviceman if you are in doubt as to whether the product is properly grounded. Do not modify the plug provided with the product – if it will not fit the outlet, have a proper outlet installed by a qualified electrician.

240V SINGLE-PHASE

DETERMINE THE CIRCUIT BREAKER REQUIREMENTS

To determine the type of upstream circuit breaker you need, examine the distribution panel or circuit breaker box to identify the amperage available at the installation site.

Choose the Best Location for COVE

Determine the parking location of the vehicle to ensure that the charge cable reaches the charge port. COVE should be located:

• In an enclosed garage, typically on the vehicle’s charge port side.
• In a well-ventilated area. Avoid installation in an enclosed box, or adjacent to hot appliances.
• 8” from any obstructions to allow for cable looping.
• So that the distance to the vehicle charge port is not longer than charge cord length of 18 ft.
• So the charge cord does not obstruct a walkway.
• In a location which is protected from a vehicle collision.

Note: COVE is approved for outdoor use, but it is not designed for complete immersion in liquid.

Installation Considerations

• Conduit openings are sized for 3/4” conduit.
• Conduit needs to meet local regulations.
• Use an appropriate upstream circuit breaker.
• Use a UL approved conduit circuit connector to ensure proper seal.

What Comes in the Box

Tools and Materials Needed

• Pencil or marker
• Wire stripper
• Phillips screwdriver
• 60A-rated copper conductors
• Voltmeter or digital multimeter (to measure AC voltage at the installation site)
• T20 Torx screwdriver
• 4mm Hex bit Driver
• 4-6x screws appropriate for wall material mounting
• 3/4” trade size conduit and fittings appropriate for the installation site

Warning: After you run service wiring to the installation site, install the appropriate upstream circuit breaker. TURN OFF AND VERIFY POWER IS OFF BEFORE CONTINUING.
Warning: Do not connect the service wiring until you have read and fully understand the concepts described in this section. If you are uncertain about the type of power available at the service panel, consult an electrician, or contact EverCharge for assistance.

Step-by-Step COVE Installation Instructions

Install Mounting Bracket
COVE can be installed on either a junction box or on a wall.
INSTALLING MOUNTING BRACKET ON A JUNCTION BOX:

1. Align the mounting bracket to a 2-gang junction box and mark the location to install the anchor in the hole at the top of the mounting bracket.
2. Secure the mounting bracket to a 2-gang junction box using the screws for the box, and the anchor screw.

INSTALLING MOUNTING BRACKET ON A WALL:

1. Position the mounting bracket in the installation location. Ensure the conduit fits properly into the opening on the mounting bracket and mark the location for the screws. Use screws that are appropriate for the type of wall material.
2. Secure the mounting bracket to the wall. (See table on the right for anchoring methods on various wall mounting surfaces).
3. Secure the conduit and fittings to the bottom of the mounting bracket.

Connect the Service Wire

1. Connect wiring to the terminals in the mounting bracket in accordance with local codes. Use 60A-rated copper conductors. COVE requires 208-240V, measured from L1 to L2.
Tighten the terminal block to the recommended torque:

• 45 in-lb (5.1 N-m) for power wires
• 40 in-lb (4.5 N-m) for ground wires

Note: Consult with your local electrician or refer to your local code for proper wire sizing appropriate for the currents in the unit.
Note: It is the installer’s responsibility to identify whether additional grounding is required to ensure that local regulations are met. Grounding must be installed at the power source and not at the cable entry to the unit.

2. Check for miswiring using the multimeter and verify that there are no shorts before turning the upstream circuit breaker ON.
3. Update label on breaker to identify COVE unit.

Insert COVE and Power Up

3. Turn ON the power at the breaker. The installation is correct if the LEDs go through a sequence of flashing with the ring LED. If you have any questions, contact EverCharge Customer Support at support@evercharge.com.

4. Complete setup using the EverCharge mobile app.

1. Required: Both installer and owner download the EverCharge Mobile App.

2. Required: Installer sets COVE’s breaker size. To set the breaker size, open the EverCharge app → Device List → Set Up New Device.
   Once the breaker size is set, the outer LED will transition from a breathing pattern to a solid pattern indicating that COVE is ready to charge.

3. Recommended: Owner connects COVE to a wireless network. To connect to a wireless network, open the EverCharge app → Device List → Set Up New Device → Enter WiFi password.

Connecting COVE to a wireless network enables access to features such as charging history and receiving future software updates.

5. Attempt to charge a vehicle to ensure COVE is operating correctly and charging at the selected operating current. For instructions on how to charge, refer to the owner information manual provided with the vehicle.

Limited Warranty for EverCharge COVE Electric Vehicle Charging Station

This Limited Warranty applies to the original purchaser of a new EverCharge COVE Electric Vehicle Charging Station (“product”). This limited warranty is not transferable and is valid for purchasers located in the U.S.A. only.

This limited warranty gives specific legal rights and individuals may also have other rights, which may vary from state to state.

Warranty Coverage and Exclusions
This limited warranty, including any and all implied warranties, such as, by way of example, any implied warranties of merchantability or fitness for a particular purpose, starts on the date of the purchase and lasts for one (1) year (“warranty period”). The warranty period is not extended if EverCharge repairs or replaces the product. EverCharge may change the availability of this limited warranty at our discretion, but any changes will not be retroactive.

EverCharge warrants that during the warranty period, the product will be free from defects in materials and workmanship. This limited warranty on the product shall not apply to defects or damages resulting from the following:

• Improper site preparation or maintenance, improper installation, installation by anyone other than a trained and licensed electrician;
• Any cosmetic damage such as dents or scratches;
• Any normal wear and tear;
• Damage, abuse, vandalism, or other problems caused by accidents, negligence or misuse (including, but not limited to, physical damage from being struck by a vehicle), or improper use of the product;
• Damage to the product caused by unauthorized repair, modifications, or combination or use with any product not supplied by EverCharge;
• Failure to follow the product instructions or warnings or to perform any preventive maintenance;
• Damage as a result of extreme power surge, extreme electromagnetic field, or any acts of nature;
• Any actions or events beyond our reasonable control.

Warranty Procedures
To obtain warranty service, the original purchaser of the product must contact our Customer Service Department at support@evercharge.com during the warranty period to obtain a Returned Material Authorization (“RMA”) number. No warranty service will be provided without a RMA number and proof of purchase.

With respect to any defective product covered by this limited warranty during the Warranty Period, EverCharge will, in its sole discretion, either: (a) repair or replace the product (or the defective part) free of charge or (b) refund the purchase price of such product. The purchaser will be responsible for the return of the product to EverCharge. EverCharge will cover the shipping cost of any repaired or replacement unit covered under this limited warranty.

Limitation of Liability

THE REMEDIES DESCRIBED HEREIN ARE THE CUSTOMER’S SOLE AND EXCLUSIVE REMEDIES AND EVERCHARGE’S ENTIRE LIABILITY FOR ANY BREACH OF THIS LIMITED WARRANTY. EVERCHARGE’S LIABILITY SHALL UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES EXCEED THE ACTUAL AMOUNT PAID FOR THE DEFECTIVE PRODUCT, NOR WILL EVERCHARGE UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES BE LIABLE FOR ANY CONSEQUENTIAL, INCIDENTAL, SPECIAL OR PUNITIVE DAMAGES OR LOSSES, WHETHER DIRECT OR INDIRECT.

SOME STATES DO NOT ALLOW THE EXCLUSION OR LIMITATION OF INCIDENTAL OR CONSEQUENTIAL DAMAGES, SO THE ABOVE LIMITATION OR EXCLUSION MAY NOT APPLY TO YOU.

Additional Terms Outside of Warranty

1. Customer is responsible for the proper installation and maintenance of their COVE unit, including the uninstalling of any defective unit and the re-installation of the repaired or replacement unit. Damage during these processes is not covered by the limited warranty above.
2. Any service or repairs beyond the scope of the limited warranty above will be performed upon the customer’s approval, and will be charged at EverCharge’s standard labor rates, as well as other thenapplicable charges and expenses.
3. Any COVE unit that is determined by EverCharge to be out-of-warranty, or otherwise ineligible for warranty service, will be returned customer’s expense, provided that if the customer wishes to have the unit returned or replaced, such return or replacement will be pursuant to EverCharge’s then-current terms, conditions, and charges, as provided separately by EverCharge at such time on customer’s request.

Dispute Process
ALL DISPUTES BETWEEN CUSTOMER AND EVERCHARGE ARISING OUT OF OR RELATING IN ANY WAY TO THIS LIMITED WARRANTY OR THE PRODUCT SHALL BE RESOLVED EXCLUSIVELY THROUGH BINDING ARBITRATION, AND NOT IN A COURT OF GENERAL JURISDICTION. BINDING ARBITRATION MEANS THAT CUSTOMER AND EVERCHARGE ARE EACH WAIVING THE RIGHT TO A JURY TRIAL AND TO BRING OR PARTICIPATE IN A CLASS ACTION.

Definitions. For the purposes of this section, references to “EverCharge” means EverCharge, its parents, subsidiaries and affiliates, and each of their officers, directors, employees, agents, beneficiaries, predecessors in interest, successors, assigns and suppliers; references to “dispute” or “claim” shall include any dispute, claim or controversy of any kind whatsoever (whether based in contract, tort, statute, regulation, ordinance, fraud, misrepresentation or any other legal or equitable theory) arising out of or relating in any way to the sale, condition or performance of the product or this Limited Warranty. “Customer” means the entity that has purchased the product and may also be referred to as “you” (or its derivatives, such as “your”).

Notice of Dispute. In the event you intend to commence an arbitration proceeding, you must first notify EverCharge in writing at least thirty (30) days in advance of initiating the arbitration by sending a letter to EverCharge 548 Market Street #31647, San Francisco, CA 94104-5401 Attn: LEGAL DEPARTMENT. You and EverCharge agree to engage in good faith discussions in an attempt to amicably resolve your claim. The notice must provide your name, address, and telephone number; identify the product that is the subject of the claim; and describe the nature of the claim and the relief being sought. If you and EverCharge are unable to resolve the dispute within 30 days, either party may proceed to file a claim for arbitration.

Agreement to Binding Arbitration and Class Action Waiver. Upon failure to resolve the dispute during the 30 day period after sending written notice to EverCharge, you and EverCharge agree to resolve any claims between us only by binding arbitration on an individual basis, unless you opt out as provided below. Any dispute between you and EverCharge shall not be combined or consolidated with a dispute involving any other person’s or entity’s product or claim. More specifically, without limitation of the foregoing, any dispute between you and EverCharge shall not under any circumstances proceed as part of a class or representative action. Instead of arbitration, either party may bring an individual action in small claims court, but that small claims court action may not be brought on a class or representative basis.

Arbitration Rules and Procedures. To begin arbitration of a claim, either you or EverCharge must make a written demand for arbitration. The arbitration will be administered by the American Arbitration Association (“AAA”) and will be conducted before a single arbitrator under the AAA’s Consumer Arbitration Rules that are in effect at the time the arbitration is initiated (referred to as the “AAA Rules”) and under the procedures set forth in this section. The AAA Rules are available online at www.adr.org/consumer. Send a copy of your written demand for arbitration, as well as a copy of this provision, to the AAA in the manner described in the AAA Rules. You must also send a copy of your written demand to EverCharge 548 Market Street #31647, San Francisco, CA 94104-5401 Attn: LEGAL DEPARTMENT. If there is a conflict between the AAA Rules and the rules set forth in this section, the rules set forth in this section will govern. This arbitration provision is governed by the Federal Arbitration Act. Judgment may be entered on the arbitrator’s award in any court of competent jurisdiction. All issues are for the arbitrator to decide, except that issues relating to the scope and enforceability of the arbitration provision and to the arbitrability of the dispute are for the court to decide. The arbitrator is bound by the terms of this provision.

Governing Law. The law of the state of your residence shall govern this Limited Warranty and any disputes between us except to the extent that such law is preempted by or inconsistent with applicable federal law. Fees/Costs. You do not need to pay any fee to begin an arbitration. Upon receipt of your written demand for arbitration, EverCharge will promptly pay all arbitration filing fees to the AAA unless you seek more than $75,000 in damages, in which case the payment of these fees will be governed by the AAA Rules. Except as otherwise provided for herein, EverCharge will pay all AAA filing, administration and arbitrator fees for any arbitration initiated in accordance with the AAA Rules and this arbitration provision. If you prevail in the arbitration, EverCharge will pay your attorneys’ fees and expenses as long as they are reasonable, by considering factors including, but not limited to, the purchase amount and claim amount. Notwithstanding the foregoing, if applicable law allows for an award of reasonable attorneys’ fees and expenses, an arbitrator can award them to the same extent that a court would. If the arbitrator finds either the substance of your claim or the relief sought in the demand is frivolous or brought for an improper purpose (as measured by the standards set forth in Federal Rule of Civil Procedure 11(b)), then the payment of all arbitration fees will be governed by the AAA Rules. In such a situation, you agree to reimburse EverCharge for all monies previously disbursed by it that are otherwise your obligation to pay under the AAA Rules. Except as otherwise provided for, EverCharge waives any rights it may have to seek attorneys’ fees and expenses from you if EverCharge prevails in the arbitration.

Hearings and Location. If your claim is for $75,000 or less, you may choose to have the arbitration conducted solely on the basis of (1) documents submitted to the arbitrator, (2) through a telephonic hearing, or (3) by an in-person hearing as established by the AAA Rules. If your claim exceeds $75,000, the right to a hearing will be determined by the AAA Rules. Any in- person arbitration hearings will be held at a location within the federal judicial district in which you reside unless we both agree to another location or we agree to a telephonic arbitration.

Opt-Out. You may opt out of this dispute resolution procedure. If you opt out, neither you nor EverCharge can require the other to participate in an arbitration proceeding. To opt out, you must send notice to EverCharge no later than thirty (30) calendar days from the date of the first consumer purchaser’s purchase of the product by sending an e-mail to legal@evercharge.com, with the subject line: “Arbitration Opt Out”. You must include in the opt out e-mail: (a) your name and address; (b) the date on which the product was purchased; (c) the product model name or model number; and (d) the serial number.

You may only opt out of the dispute resolution procedure in the manner described above; no other form of notice will be effective to opt out of this dispute resolution procedure. Opting out of this dispute resolution procedure will not affect the coverage of the Limited Warranty in any way, and you will continue to enjoy the full benefits of the Limited Warranty. If you keep this product and do not opt out, then you accept all terms and conditions of the arbitration provision described above.
