Product Information

The KEF Ci series custom installation loudspeakers,Ci3160REFM-THX and Ci5160REFM-THX, are designed for installation in dry-lined, stud partition walls, suspended ceilings, and ceilings.
These speakers are built to deliver superb sound quality and are suitable for long-term use.

Warning
Installation of these loudspeakers should only be performed by a professional installer who is skilled in using hand and power tools, knowledgeable about local building and fire codes, and familiar with the environment behind the wall or ceiling where the speaker will be installed. Care should be taken to avoid cutting through electric cables, water or gas pipes, or supporting joists.
It is important to ensure that the wall or ceiling can support the weight of the speaker assemblies.

Important Points

  1. Before installing the speakers, make sure there is walldamping insulation in place. If there is a paper backing facing the speaker, remove it in the area behind the speaker. Some insulation may need to be removed to allow space for installation. Check local building codes for specific requirements.
  2. To enhance stability, apply a construction adhesive between the drywall and the studs. This should be done to the entire sheet of drywall where the speaker is installed.

Note: The above information is provided in multiple languages for user convenience.

Product Usage Instructions

  1. Ensure you have read and understood the installation manual.
  2. Identify the suitable location for installation considering the type of wall or ceiling.
  3. If necessary, remove any paper backing from the wall damping insulation behind the speaker area.
  4. If required by local building codes, remove insulation to create space for installation.
  5. Apply a construction adhesive between the drywall and the studs along the entire sheet of drywall where the speaker will be installed.
  6. Carefully mount the speaker in the designated location, ensuring it is securely attached to the wall or ceiling.
  7. Verify that the installation does not interfere with any electric cables, water or gas pipes, or supporting joists.
  8. Test the speaker to ensure it is functioning properly and delivering the desired sound quality.

Ci Series Installation Manual
Ci3160REFM-THX & Ci5160REFM-THX

Introduction

Thank you for purchasing this KEF Ci series custom installation loudspeaker. These products have been designed for dry-lined, stud partition walls and ceilings and for suspended ceilings and will deliver many years of superb sound quality.

Warning
Installation should be performed by an installer who is skilled in the proper use of hand and power tools, knowledge of local building and fire codes, and who is familiar with the environment behind the wall or ceiling where the speaker is being installed. No attempt should be made to install these loudspeakers unless you are sure you will not be cutting through electric cables, water or gas pipes, or supporting joists. Ensure the loading on the wall or ceiling will support the weight of these assemblies.

Important Points

Wall Damping

  • The sound quality of your KEF in-wall speaker will be improved if the entire wall cavity is filled with 1 standard fiberglass insulation. If the insulation is in place and has a paper backing facing the speaker remove the paper in the area behind the speaker. Some insulation may need to be removed behind the speaker to allow space for installation. (check local building codes).
  • To maximise sonic output and minimise unwanted wall vibration take steps to increase rigidity of the wall by using 3 additional drywall screws and a  4 construction adhesive between the drywall and  2 the studs. This should be done to the entire sheet of drywall where the speaker is installed.

Ci5160REFM-THX rear enclosure construction for THX Certified Dominus installation

Rear enclosure construction guidelines

  • Ci5160REFM-THX Ci3160REFM-THX are designed to fit in standard 2″ x 4″ stud wall bays mounted on 16″ centres.
  • Special care should be taken with the construction to ensure consistent, controlled performance.
  • Please refer to the product specification or KEFs Minimum Cabinet Volume chart for the minimum required cavity volume for your speaker when designing enclosures or determining placement directly into stud bays. This will help maximise the bass performance of your loudspeaker.
  • Please ensure that loudspeakers (unless specified) do not share wall cavities.
  • The wall and cavity should be built as a rigid and sturdy structure to minimise vibration and to prevent leakage into other rooms. Construction adhesive and caulking should be applied to seal the cavity and prevent susceptibility to rattling or buzzing.
  • The cavity should be filled with acoustically absorbent material such as rock wool or polyester fibre to suppress cavity resonances.
