PestWest MANTIS 1X2 MAX50 Commercial Fly Light Powder Coated

Product Information

The MANTIS 1X2 MAX50 is an insect light trap (ILT) manufactured by PestWest Electronics Ltd. It is designed to attract and trap flying insects using UVA light. The ILT is made with high-quality materials, including a rust-resistant zintex steel chassis/frame with a conformal polyester powder-coated finish.

Product Usage Instructions

  1. Caution: Before using the ILT, observe the following precautions:
    • Do not install the ILT where dangerous concentrations of flammable gases or dusts are likely to occur.
    • Avoid installing in wet environments or where there is a potential for overspray.
    • Ensure the system is properly grounded.
    • Avoid working on the system while connected to the main power supply.
    • Provide operators with an adequate and secure working platform when working on the machine.
    • Do not allow the glue board to become over-filled with dead insects. Change it regularly as required or at least every 8 weeks.
  2. Unpacking: Carefully unpack the ILT, ensuring to remove all packing materials and inspect for any transport damage.
  3. Operation: The MANTIS 1X2 MAX50 ILT operates continuously (24 hours a day, 7 days a week) based on the principle that flying insects are attracted to UVA light. Place the ILT away from lighting fixtures or windows to maximize insect attraction. Use the ILT in conjunction with good housekeeping practices.
  4. Location: Follow these guidelines for optimal ILT placement:
    • Minimize competition from other light sources by locating the ILT where the intensity of daylight and overhead lighting is minimal.
    • For food areas, position the ILT adjacent to, but not directly over, exposed food or food preparation surfaces to attract flies away from those areas.
    • Refer to the current local, state, and federal food codes for additional guidance in food areas.
    • Install the ILT near areas where flies tend to aggregate.
    • Position the ILT adjacent to fly ingress points such as service/overhead doors and windows.
    • Avoid placing the ILT over lock-out, tag-out areas.
    • Position the trap at a reachable height, ideally around head height for ease of servicing.
  5. Coverage Area: The UVA light emitted by the ILT’s lamps is not visible to people, but they can see the blue light. The intensity of UVA light diminishes over time and with
distance from the lamps. For optimal placement and results, use the PestWest UV-AMETER.

DESCRIPTION
The Mantis 1X2 MAX 50 is manufactured with the highest quality materials. The zintex (rust-resistant) steel chassis/frame is sprayed with conformal polyester powder-coated finish.

UNPACKING YOUR MAX 50
This system has been carefully inspected and packed before leaving our factory. Before discarding the outer carton, examine for obvious evidence of transport damage. Remove the system from the container and be sure to remove all packing materials including any transit packing.

OPERATION

  • The PestWest Mantis 1X2 MAX 50 insect light trap operates on the principal that flying insects are attracted to the UVA light (ultraviolet) end of the light spectrum.
  • Since insects will fly at night, insect light traps must operate continuously (24 hours a day-7 days a week).
  • The Mantis 1×2 MAX50 works by attracting flying insects to UVA light emitted by the lamps within the system.
  • Do not place the MAX50 near lighting fixtures or windows as flying insect attraction will be reduced.
  • Use the MAX50 in addition to good house-keeping practices.

LOCATION

General system location:

  • System efficacy can be affected by the intensity of other light sources (daylight and overhead lighting).
  • For good results, locate the system where competition from other light sources is minimal.
  • For optimum results, install all your systems using the PestWest UV-AMETER.
  • In food areas, mount the system adjacent to, but not directly over, exposed food or food preparation surfaces (attract flies away from food preparation areas).
  • Always refer to the current local, State and Federal Food Codes.
  • Observe where flies tend to aggregate and install your system adjacent to that area.
  • Position systems adjacent to fly ingress points (service/overhead doors, and windows).
  • Do not position the system over lock-out, tag-out areas.
  • Position the trap where it can be easily reached, ideally around head height for ease of servicing.

COVERAGE AREA

  • People cannot see UVA light from UVA BL lamps, but can see the blue light from UVA BL lamps.
  • The UVA light diminished over time. Additionally, UVA light decreases proportionately by the distance from the lamps (Inverse Square Law).
  • Therefore, for optimum placement and results, use the PestWest UV-AMETER.

MAINTENANCE

  • To maintain the attractive appearance of the system, wipe down as often as required.
  • Use a cloth dampened with water and detergent or a proprietary cleaner.
  • Do not use scouring pads or abrasives.

INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS

  • The PestWest Mantis 1X2 MAX 50 comes with a wall mounting bracket, screws, and plastic rawl plugs (for masonry).
  • Additionally, the system comes complete with a 6 foot power cord and operates from a 110-277V 50/60Hz power supply.
  • If it is necessary to extend the power cord, a licensed electrician must perform the work. Ensure the power cord is secured.
  • Using the wall-mounting bracket as a template, mark off 2 drill points onto the mounting surface.
  • Using the screws and plastic rawl plugs provided, secure the wall-mounting bracket to the wall.
  • The rear of system must be hooked onto the wall-mounting bracket.
  • Alternate mounting can be made using the keyhole slots in the back of the system.
  • Remove the glue board and mark the hole position using the body as a template.
Note: If the wall is of drywall/sheet rock, stud partition, etc., then drywall wall anchors must be used to ensure the system is secured in-place. Once the system is installed, and before the glue board is slotted into the system, remove the backing paper from the glue board to reveal the glue surface.

GROUNDING INSTRUCTIONS

  • This appliance must be grounded. In the event of malfunction or breakdown, grounding provides a path of least resistance for electric current to reduce the risk of electric shock.
  • This appliance is equipped with a power cord having an equipment – grounding conductor and a grounding plug.
  • The plug must be plugged into an appropriate outlet that is properly installed and grounded in accordance with all local codes and ordinances.

DANGER

  • Improper connection of the equipment-grounding conductor can result in a risk of electric shock.
  • The conductor with insulation having an outer surface that is green with or without yellow stripes is the equipment-grounding conductor.
  • If repair or replacement of the cord or plug is necessary, do not connect the equipment-grounding conductor to a live terminal.
  • Check with a licensed electrician or serviceman if the grounding instructions are not completely understood, or if in doubt as to whether the appliance is properly grounded.
  • Do not modify the plug provided with the appliance – if it will not fit the outlet, have a proper outlet installed by a licensed electrician.

Figure 1 – Grounding Methods

  • This appliance is for use on a nominal 110-277V circuit, and has a grounding plug that looks like the adaptor illustrated in sketch A Figure 1.
  • A temporary adaptor, which looks like the adaptor illustrated in sketches B and C, may be used to connect this plug to a 2-pole receptacle as shown in sketch B if a properly grounded outlet is not available.
  • The temporary adaptor should be UL listed and used only until a properly grounded outlet can be installed by a licensed electrician.
  • The green colored rigid ear, lug, and the like, extending from the adaptor must be connected to a permanent ground such as a properly grounded outlet box cover.
  • Whenever the adaptor is used, it must be held in place by the metal screw.

GLUE BOARD REPLACEMENT

ALWAYS TURN OFF POWER TO THE SYSTEM BEFORE SERVICING.

  • Due to insect contamination the glue board must be changed when full or at least every eight weeks. PestWest Mantis range systems use the same size glue board in a variety of colors and card materials to suit any application.
  • Use ONLY PestWest glue boards to ensure peak efficacy.
  • Remove the backing paper from the new glue board in a single swift motion (otherwise it will tend to remain firmly attached).
  • Should this occur, re-apply the peeled back section and repeat.
  • If the glue board sticks to an unintended surface, vegetable oil will release the glue.
  • To remove the glue board first remove the catch tray by pulling the spring catch on the right hand side of the tray then pull the tray away from the system.
  • Remove the used glue board from the system by pulling it downwards and out.
  • Remove the backing paper and insert the new glue board edges under the guides with the sticky side facing the lamps.

UV LAMP REPLACEMENT

ALWAYS TURN OFF POWER TO THE SYSTEM BEFORE SERVICING.

  • Lamps are most attractive to target flying insects when greater than 100 hours (burn in) and less than 1-year old.
  • The UV light emitted by lamps at a wavelength of 365 m diminishes with use.
  • Daily switching on and off of the lamps results in an even faster loss of UV emission.

LEAVE THE SYSTEM POWERED ON CONTINUOUSLY AND CHANGE THE LAMPS AT LEAST ONCE PER YEAR (PREFERABLY AT THE ONSET OF INCREASED FLIGHT ACTIVITY AFTER THE WINTER).

  • FOR INTERIM LAMP MAINTENANCE, USE THE PESTWEST UV-AMETER.
  • PestWest offers both standard and shatter- resistant (FEP coated) lamps.
  • The shatter- resistant lamp is intended for use in glass exclusion zones and come as standard with this system.
  • The FEP coating on PestWest lamps (supplied with the system) is of the highest quality available.
  • FEP coating uses a material that is both UV and operating temperature tolerant while allowing optimum 365 nm UV light emission.
  • Use ONLY PestWest Quantum 25W lead-free replacement lamps.
  • Access to the UV lamps may be gained by opening the chromium guard on the front of the system.
  • This pivots from its lower edge in the slots located on each end of the body.
  • To open the guard, remove the catch tray as detailed under

GLUE BOARD REPLACEMENT.

  • Support the system and while holding the center section of the guard, push it upwards towards the top of the chassis slots.
  • The upper chassis slots have cut outs to permit the top of the guard to pull free from the system and pivot downwards sufficient to access the lamps.
  • Grasp the lamp and rotate in either direction (90°).
  • After 2 clicks are heard, the lamp may be removed by sliding out of the lamp holder.
  • Installing the new lamp is a reversal of the above procedure.

TO REPLACE THE REUSABLE REFLECTOBAKT® SLEEVE

  • Remove the old lamp(s) from the system.
  • Carefully pull off the Reflectobakt® sleeve from the lamp.
  • It clips around the circumference of the lamp.
  • Take your new lamp and line up the two leading edges of the Reflectobakt® sleeve with the pairs of pins at either end of the lamp (see Fig 1).
  • Center the sleeve to the lamp so that the small gap between the end of the sleeve and the metal end cap of the lamp is the same at both ends.
  • Carefully push the sleeve so it is in contact along the length of the lamp surface.
  • It should grip and stay in position.
  • Insert the lamp into the lamp holders then turn the lamp 90° (a quarter turn or two clicks on the lamp holder).
  • Be sure to position the sleeve to the BACK of the lamp. This shields the glue board from UVA light, which extends glue board life.
