MANTIS 4X4EX EXPLOSION-RATED AND MANTIS 4X4 WHITE INDUSTRIAL SIZE GLUE SYSTEMS : SPECIALTY SYSTEMS INSTRUCTIONS FOR USE – PLEASE SWITCH OFF MACHINE BEFORE SERVICING

PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

PestWest fly systems are made using the highest quality materials. A choice of bodywork is available, either conformal polyester powder coated finish over a zintex (rust-resistant) frame or a 316 grade polished stainless steel. The 4×4 models carry the following ratings and approvals: Both models satisfy requirements of UL 1559/73
and are UL listed. The Mantis 4x4EX is suitable for Zone II areas as defined in EN50079-0:2009. It has the IP65 and EX (explosion rated) rating to EN61241-1 & EN60529, which makes it suitable for use in areas where there may be potential for explosive dusts in the atmosphere, i.e. sugar factories, flour mills etc.
The white industrial version (not explosion rated) is one of the largest of available glue board systems. It complies with the requirements of the food production industry.
The exclusive double-sided industrial glue board provides 926 square inches of insect capture surface. Both feature the PestWest Reflectobakt ® (patented) sleeves.
UNPACKING YOUR 4×4
Each system is carefully inspected and packed before leaving our factory. Before discarding the outer carton, examine for obvious evidence of transport damage. Remove the system and pay particular attention to the removal of all packing materials including any transit packing.

OPERATION

Electrical fly systems operate on the principal that most flying insects are attracted to light, particularly to the ultra violet (UV) end of the light spectrum. This light is invisible to humans, however, the lamps glow blue, which indicates that they are functioning. The efficiency of a system can be affected by the intensity of other competing sources of
light, particularly daylight (see “Installation”). Since insects are still active and will fly at night (when competition from other light sources is normally lowest), systems should be operating continuously, i.e.: 24 hours a day.
LOCATION
The Mantis 4x4s work by attracting flying insects to UVA light emitted by the lamps within the systems. Do not place near lighting fixtures or windows as flying insect attraction will be reduced. Use the Mantis 4x4s in addition to good sanitation practices.

  1. For optimum results, install all your systems using the PestWest UV-AMETER.
  2. In food areas, mount the system >10 ft. from food or food preparation areas (attract flies away from food production areas).
  3. Always refer to the current local, State and Federal Food Codes.
  4. Observe where flies tend to aggregate and install your system adjacent to that area.
  5. Position systems adjacent to fly ingress points (service/overhead doors, and windows).
  6. Do not position the system over lock-out, tag-out areas.
  7. Position the system where it can be reasonably serviced.
  8. The Mantis 4×4 systems must be installed by a licensed electrician.
  9. For potentially hazaradous areas, the end user is soley responsible in determining whether or not the Mantis 4x4EX meets any, and all, laws, codes, and, regulations.

COVERAGE
People cannot see UVA light from UVA BL lamps, but can see the blue light from UVA BL lamps. The UVA light diminished over time. Additionally, UVA light decreases proportionately by the distance from the lamps (Inverse Square Law). Therefore, for optimum placement and results, use the PestWest UV-AMETER.
INSTALLATION
The Mantis 4×4 industrial models are designed for suspended mounting inside larger commercial spaces. To achieve maximum effectiveness, which is consistent with product and operator safety, the Mantis 4×4 models should be installed within personnel occupied areas. The Mantis 4×4 models must be mounted a minimum of 3 meters or 10 feet above floor level.
DO NOT INSTALL THE WHITE MODEL WITHIN ANY HAZARDOUS ENVIRONMENTS.
For safety, when suspending the Mantis 4×4 models, each hanging chain (not included) must be of non-corroding material and capable of holding at least 30Ibs. Only welded link chains should be used in corrosive/damp environments. For ease of service and re-hanging, it is recommended that each chain is fitted with a spring quick release clip at the end connecting to the system. Be sure each release clip is capable of holding 30Ibs.
The Mantis 4×4 models are manufactured with an 8 ft. power cable and operate from a 110120V 60Hz power supply. For any environment, any extension to the power cable must be completed by a licensed electrician. Ensure the power cord is secured.
The Mantis models must be grounded. In the event of malfunction or breakdown, grounding provides a path of least resistance for electric current to reduce the risk of electric shock. The Mantis 4×4 models are equipped with a cord having an equipment grounding conductor and a grounding plug. The plug must be plugged into an appropriate outlet that is properly installed and grounded in accordance with all codes and ordinances.
DANGER
Improper connection of the equipment grounding be damnot conductor can result in a risk of electric shock.
The conductor with insulation, possessing an outer surface that is green with or without yellow stripes, is the equipment grounding conductor. If repair or replacement of the cord or plug is necessary, do not connect the equipmentgrounding conductor to a live terminal. Consult with a licensed electrician if the grounding instructions are not completely understood, or if in doubt as to whether the Mantis 4×4 model is properly grounded. Do not modify the plug provided with the Mantis 4×4 model. If it will not fit the outlet, have an outlet installed by a licensed electrician. Any Mantis 4x4EX model installation within a hazardous environment must be completed by a licensed electrician. Any Mantis 4x4EX installation must comply to all codes and ordinances.

MAINTENANCE

To maintain the attractive appearance of the systems, they should be cleaned/wiped down as often as required. Use a cloth dampened with water and detergent or a proprietary cleaner. Do not use scouring pads or abrasives. To maintain peak effectiveness, change the glue board when full or at least every eight weeks. The UVA lamps within the Mantis 4×4 models should be changed at least once per year (preferably at the onset of increased flight activity or post-winter). In areas of high ambient light or where strict flying insect control is necessary, replacement every 6 months will provide optimum efficacy.
LAMPS
Lamps are most attractive to target flying insects when greater than 100 hours (burn in) and less than one year old. The UV light emitted by lamps at a wavelength of 365 nm diminishes with use. Daily switching on and off of the lamps results in an even faster loss of the effective UV emission. Be sure to leave the Mantis 4×4 system on 24/7/365.

Remove adhesive board from body of the system and open the hinged front guard. Grasp the lamp with one hand and unscrew the white serrated waterproof end-cap counter-clockwise until it slides free from the lamp holder. Repeat the operation for the other end of the lamp. Care must be taken when removing the waterproof end-caps. Be sure the rear black rubber sealing ring does not become displaced and remains on the lamp holder body. If displaced, it must be removed and refitted into the annular ring on the back of the waterproof cap (before reassembly onto system). Rotate the lamp (two distinct clicks will be heard) until the slot in the grey central lamp holder
boss aligns with the cut-out on the white outer housing. The lamp may now be withdrawn (downwards for the upper two lamps and upwards for the lower two lamps).
Note the position of the Reflectobakt® sleeves in relation to the pins at the end of the lamp and refit on the new lamp. Be sure the same position or central along the lamp lengths.
Position the waterproof caps on the lamp. Refit into the lamp holders and rotate two clicks (either direction).
Note: When replacing each waterproof cap, hold the lamp to avoid rotation while the caps are tightened. Caps should be fully screwed down to ensure a watertight seal with the lamp. Check to be sure the top and bottom edges of each Reflectobakt® sleeve are in a vertical plane (positioned as to sit between the glue board and the lamp). Remove and refit if necessary (assures glue board efficacy).
MANTIS 4X4 WHITE MODEL
The procedure for changing lamps on the white model is identical to the above except waterproof end-caps and the front guard doors are not available
REFLECTOBAKT® SLEEVES
Remove the old lamp(s) from the Mantis 4×4. Carefully pull-off the Reflectobakt® sleeve from the lamp. It clips around the circumference of the lamp. Take the new lamp and position the two leading edges of the Reflectobakt® sleeve in relation to the pairs of pins at either end of the lamp as shown in Fig 1.
Ensure that the sleeve is centered on the lamp so that the small gap between the end of the sleeve and the metal end of the lamp is the same at both ends. Carefully push the sleeve so it is in contact along the length of the lamp surface. It should grip and stay in position.
Re-fit the lamp into the lamp holders then turn the tune through 90 degrees (a quarter turn or two clicks on the lamp holder). This should position the sleeve at the back of the lamp, keeping the light off the glue board. At all times, handle the Reflectobakt® sleeve with care as the dimensions are critical for proper lamp fit. as the dimensions are critical in order that it fits the lamp properly.
