PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
PestWest Mantis systems are made using the highest quality materials. The bodywork is of either conformal polyester powder-coated white or black finish over a zintex (rust-resistant) frame or 304 brushed stainless steel finish (Mantis 1×2 model only). On open faced models, where the lamps are visible when in use, there is a front chromium plated steel guard protecting the UVA lamps against damage as well as glue board contact.
UNPACKING YOUR System
Each system is carefully inspected and packed before leaving our factory.
Before discarding the outer carton, examine for obvious evidence of transport
damage. Remove the system and pay particular attention to the removal of all
packing materials including any transit packing. Including the release paper
off the glue board.
OPERATION
The PestWest Mantis range of systems operate on the principal that most flying
insects are attracted to light, particularly to the ultra violet (UV) end
of the light spectrum. Since insects are still very active and will fly at
night, systems should be left operating continuously, i.e.: 24 hours a day.
The Mantis systems operate by attracting flying insects to UVA light emitted
by the lamps within the system. Do not place near lighting fixtures or windows
as flying insect attraction will be reduced. Use the Mantis systems in
addition to good house-keeping practices.
LOCATION
It is impossible to give one set of recommendations to cover all requirements or situations. These general guidelines are given in the knowledge that some of them apparently conflict with others. Users should adopt those that best fit their needs or seek expert advice. As a general rule:
- Mantis systems should be positioned so as to minimize competition from other light sources, so do not mount adjacent to windows. In food areas, mount the system close to, but not directly over, exposed food or food preparation surfaces (preferably to attract flies away from food preparation areas).
- Observe where the flies tend to congregate and if possible, put your system, in or close to that area.
- Position systems in an “interception” position from the principal point of fly entry – normally doors and/or windows. In food establishments, flies are more likely to come in through the back door rather than the front, because that is where the kitchen refuse and garbage cans are kept.
- Mount the system in a convenient location for changing the glue board; Do not place over working machinery where access may be difficult or dangerous.
COVERAGE
People cannot see UVA light from UVA BL lamps, but can see the blue light from
UVA BL lamps. The UVA light diminished over time. Additionally, UVA light
decreases proportionately by the distance from the lamps (Inverse Square Law).
Therefore, for optimum placement and results, use the PestWest UV-AMETER.
MAINTENANCE
To maintain the attractive appearance of the systems, they should be
cleaned/wiped down as often as required. Use a cloth dampened with water and
detergent or a proprietary cleaner. Do not use scouring pads or abrasives.
INSTALLATION
Select the optimum position for the system using the guidelines given (see
“Location”).
PestWest Mantis range offers a choice of either wall-mounted or freely
suspended. Wall mounted systems are supplied with a backing plate
plastic bracket for attaching to the wall (screws and masonry plugs supplied
with the system). Suspended systems have top lugs for fitting in suspended
mode.
For safety reasons PestWest recommend that on the suspended mounted systems,
each of the hanging chains (which are not supplied) should be of non-corroding
material that is capable of taking at least 30 lbs each. Only welded link
chains should be used in corrosive/damp environments. For ease of service and
re-hanging, it is recommended that the chain have a spring release clip at the
end connected to the system, ensuring that they also are capable of supporting
30 lbs each.
The systems are fitted with a 6.5 ft. power cord and operate from a 110v 60Hz
supply. If it is necessary to extend the power cord, it is recommended that a
licensed electrician perform this work. Ensure that once installed, the power
lead is adequately secured. Before installing any Mantis, please remove all
packaging.
This appliance must be grounded. In the event of malfunction or breakdown,
grounding provides
a path of least resistance for electric current to reduce the risk of electric
shock. This appliance
is equipped with a cord having an equipment-grounding conductor and a
grounding plug. The plug must be plugged into an appropriate outlet that is
properly installed and grounded in accordance with all local codes and
ordinances.
DANGER
Improper connection of the equipment-grounding conductor can result in a risk
of electric shock. The conductor with insulation having an outer surface that
is green with or without yellow stripes is the equipment-grounding conductor.
If repair or replacement of the cord or plug is necessary, do not connect the
equipment grounding conductor to a live terminal. Check with a licensed
electrician or serviceman if the grounding instructions are not completely
understood, or if in doubt as to whether the appliance is properly grounded.
Do not modify the plug provided with the appliance – if it will not fit the
outlet, have a proper outlet installed by a qualified electrician.
MANTIS 1X2
The system is designed to be wall mounted, and the wall bracket hooks under
the rear lip of the lid of the system. Using the wall bracket as a template,
mark off the two drill points on the mounting surface, having checked that the
bracket is level. Using the screws and plastic plugs provided, secure the
bracket in place, making sure that the mounting lip of the bracket is most
elevated. Alternate securing can be made using the keyhole slots in the back
of the system, remove the glue-board and mark the hole position using the body
as a template.
NB: If the wall is of drywall/sheet rock or stud partition etc, suitable
hardware must be used to ensure that the system will be securely positioned.
Hook the 1×2 system onto the bracket such that the bracket locates under the
rear lip of the lid. Secure the power cord to the wall or other firm surface
prior to connecting to the supply. Once the system is installed, you will need
to remove the backing paper from the glue boards to reveal the glued surface.
MANTIS 2X2
NOTE : ENSURE BEFORE INSTALLING THE System THAT THE SURFACE FROM WHICH IT
IS TO BE SUSPENDED IS CAPABLE OF SUPPORTING THE WEIGHT.
To suspend the system, you will need two chains of sufficient length to suit
(not supplied). This chain should be of suitable gauge to support at least 30
lbs each. For ease of removal, we recommend that the chain that is attached to
the system has spring clips at the ends for easy on/off. (again making sure
they are each capable of supporting 30 lbs each- see – Installation). After
selecting the optimum position for the system using the guidelines given (see
– Location), attach the chains to the point from which the system is to be
suspended. Ensuring that the system hangs level, place the clips or chain
through the suspension brackets located on either side of the lid. Once the
system is installed, you will need to remove the backing paper from the glue
boards to reveal the glued surface.

PRECAUTIONS
All PestWest systems are fully insulated, Class I appliances, nevertheless, sensible precautions should be observed:
- Do not install where dangerous concentrations of flammable gases or dusts are likely to occur.
- Do not install in damp or corrosive environments.
- Ensure the system is properly grounded.
- Avoid working on the machines while they are still connected to the mains.
- Ensure that operators have an adequate and secure working platform when working on the machines.
- Do not allow the glue board to become over-filled with dead insects. Change at regular intervals as required by the catch or at least every 8 weeks.
- PestWest systems are designed for indoor use only.
GLUE BOARD REPLACEMENT
Due to insect contamination the glue boards should be changed when full or at
least every eight weeks. PestWest Mantis range all use the same size of board.
Always fit PestWest glue boards to ensure peak efficacy.
Remove the backing paper from the new board in a single swift motion;
otherwise it will tend to remain firmly attached. Should this occur, re-apply
the peeled back section and repeat.
MANTIS 1X2
Remove the catch tray by pulling out and holding the spring-loaded silver knob
on the side of the tray. Remove the old glue board by pulling down and out of
the machine. See illustration at right.
Remove the release paper from the new board (see above) and slide into
position, sticky side facing the UV lamps, ensuring the board clicks into
place under the spring retainers at the top of the machine. Replace catch tray
by slotting the two lugs on the tray into the corresponding holes and again
pulling and holding the silver knob on the opposite end of the tray. A
positive click will be heard when the spring-loaded knob locates in the
retaining hole on the body of the system.
MANTIS 2X2
The procedure for changing the glue boards is identical to the Mantis 1×2
instructions, except that it needs to be repeated for the reverse side on the
2×2 model.
LAMPS
People cannot see UVA light from UVA BL lamps, but can see the blue light from
UVA BL lamps. The UVA light diminished over time. Additionally, UVA light
decreases proportionately by the distance from the lamps (Inverse Square Law).
Therefore, for optimum placement and results, use the PestWest UV-AMETER.
Lamps are most attractive to target flying insects when greater than 100 hours
(burn in) and less than one year old. The UVA light emitted by lamps at a
wavelength of 350 to 370 nm diminishes with use. Daily switching on and off of
the lamps results in an even faster loss of the effective UVA emission.
THEREFORE IT IS MOST EFFECTIVE TO LEAVE THE SYSTEMS SWITCHED ON CONTINUOUSLY
AND TO CHANGE THE LAMPS AT LEAST ONCE PER YEAR (PREFERABLY AT THE ONSET OF
INCREASED FLIGHT ACTIVITY AFTER THE WINTER).
PestWest offer both standard and shatter-resistant (coated) lamps. The
shatter-resistant lamp is intended for use in glass exclusion zones. The
coating on lamps supplied with our systems is of the highest quality
available, using a material that is both UV and operating temperature tolerant
while allowing high emissions of the critical (368nm) wavelength of light.
Replacements should be of similar performance.
PestWest’s Mantis range of systems are manufactured with ‘Reflectobakt’®
sleeves. A PestWest innovation introduced to improve the performance of the
glue boards used in the systems. The reusable Reflectobakt® sleeve is a screen
positioned between the source of the UV light and the glue board, reducing the
UV light striking the board and significantly increasing the life of the
adhesive. Other brands of glue boards may not have effective UV inhibitors
that PestWest brand incorporates in this system, therefore, ONLY PestWest glue
boards and and components should be installed in Mantis systems.
It is important when you put the lamps back in the machines that the
Reflectobakt® shield is positioned at the back of the lamp so the UV light is
visible out of the machine.
While the recommended eight-week board replacement cycle remains unaltered, the effective life of the glue for a wide range of insects is enhanced. Whether you are changing your lamps every 12 months and re-using your Reflectobakt® shield or fitting it for the first time.

MANTIS 1X2 AND 2X2
The procedure for changing the lamps is identical for both these systems, except that it needs to be repeated for the reverse side on the 2×2 model. Access to the UV lamps may be gained by opening the chromium guard on the front of the machine. This pivots from its lower edge in slots located on each end of the body. To open the guard, remove the catch tray as detailed under “Mantis 1×2”. Support the system and holding the center portion of the guard, push it upwards towards the top of the bodywork slots. The upper bodywork slots have cut-outs to permit the top of the guard to pull free from the machine and pivot downwards sufficient to allow access to the lamps. Grasp and rotate each lamp 90o until the 2 clicks are heard. The lam may then be withdrawn by sliding out of the lamp holders. Before reinserting new lamps, re-fit the Reflectobakt® sleeves and ensure they are positioned at the back of the lamps (between the glue board and lamps). Installing new lamps is a reversal of the above procedure. When refitting the guard and tray, ensure that each item locates correctly in the main body.
THE REFLECTOBAKT® SLEEVE
Remove the old lamp(s) from the machine. Carefully pull off the Reflectobakt® sleeve from the lamp. (It clips around the circumference of the lamp). Take your new lamp and line up the two leading edges of the Reflectobakt® sleeve with the pairs of pins at either end of the lamp (see Fig 1). Ensure that the sleeve is fitted centrally to the lamp so that the small gap between the end of the sleeve and the metal end of the lamp is the same at both ends. Carefully push the sleeve so it is in contact along the length of the lamp surface. It should grip and stay in position. Re-fit the lamp into the lamp holders then turn the lamp through 90 degrees (a quarter turn or two clicks on the lamp holder). This should position the sleeve at the back of the lamp, keeping the light off the glue board.
METHOD OF ASSEMBLING REFLECTOBAKT® SHOWING ALIGNMENT IN RELATION TO PINS:
At all times, handle the shield with care, as the dimensions are critical in
order that it fits the lamp properly.
