Operation
To create strong joints, you’ll set your jig to match the thickness of the workpiece and the length of the screw.
-
Set the Drill Guide
- For a strong joint, the screw should exit close to the center of the drilled workpiece.
- To adjust the pocket-hole position, unscrew the drill-guide locking pin (F). Then align the mark on the side of the drill guide (E) that matches the thickness of the workpiece with the top edge of the guide socket (B).
- Screw in the locking pin (F).
-
Choose a Screw
-
Coarse Thread:
Due to the large diameter and thread pitch, our No. 8 coarse-thread screws offer a strong hold in softwoods and composite materials. Use in woods such as pine, cedar, basswood, poplar, plywood, MDF, and particle board. -
Fine Thread:
Because the smaller diameter and thread pitch, our No. 7 fine-thread screws reduce the chance of splitting the material, we recommend them for hardwoods. Use in woods such as ash, oak, maple, walnut, hickory, cherry, mahogany, and birch.
NOTE: All Kreg pocket screws feature a deep square drive that improves driver engagement and reduces the possibility of cam-out. The selftapping auger point eliminates the need to drill a pilot hole.
Kreg offers a complete line of pocket screws for every workpiece thickness and type. Use this chart to select the correct screw length. All Kreg pocket screws are available at your Kreg dealer or online at kregtool.com.
Screw Selection / Kreg Jig® Setting Chart
NOTE: Screw length is measured from the bottom of the head to the tip of the screw.

Material Thickness| Screw Length| Kreg Jig ® Setting|
1-1⁄4″ (32 mm)
---|---|---|---
1⁄2 in. [13 mm]| 1 in. [25 mm]| 13 mm Mark
5⁄8 in. [16 mm]| 1 in. [25 mm]| 16 mm Mark

3. Position the Stop Collar:
- Place the step bit (G) in the setup gauge on the jig base, aligning the step shoulder with the dimension mark that matches the thickness of your workpiece. Slide the stop collar (H) onto the end of the bit and position it against the end of the stop-collar recess. Tighten the stop-collar set screw with the hex wrench (I).
-
Adjust the Clamp Pad:
- Advance the toggle clamp (C) to the fully-clamped position. Loosen the jam nut by rotating it on the threaded clamp rod. Place your workpiece against the drill guide. Rotate the clamp pad (D) until it is pressing against the workpiece. Move the toggle clamp handle to the unclamped position. Rotate the clamp pad (D) another 1-1/2 to 2 turns to advance it closer to the workpiece. Advance the toggle clamp (C) to the fully-clamped position to test that adequate clamping pressure prevents the workpiece from moving
- To further adjust clamping pressure, advance the toggle to the unclamped position and slightly rotate the clamp pad (D) (to increase or decrease pressure). Advance the toggle to the fully-clamped position to retest. Secure the clamp pad (D) setting by rotating the jam nut until it is firmly tightened against the clamp shaft (C). Pocket-Hole Placement:
In addition to the proper Kreg Jig® settings, spacing pocket holes evenly across the workpiece is an important part of getting a strong joint. The Kreg Jig® features a three-hole drill guide that allows you to do this in a variety of workpiece widths without the need to reposition the workpiece after drilling each hole. Use the guide below to determine how to position your workpiece for drilling pocket holes. For wide parts such as panels, we recommend placing the first pocket hole 2″ (51 mm) from the panel edge and every 6″ (152mm) to 8″ (203mm) on center after that. When drilling panels, you can use any drill guide hole.
-
Drilling Pocket Holes:
a. Before turning on the drill, slide the bit into the drill guide until the tip of the bit touches the workpiece. Withdraw the bit about 1/4 in. (6mm). Turn on the drill, make sure it is running at full speed, and feed the bit into the workpiece. Always run variable-speed or multi-speed drills at the fastest speed. A shop vacuum connected to the vacuum port quickly removes the wood chips and the hole can be drilled in one motion. When not using a vacuum port, partially withdraw the bit several times while drilling the pocket hole to clear the chips. Stop drilling when the stop collar contacts the drill guide. Wait until the drill stops rotating to withdraw the bit from the drill guide. -
Driving Pocket-Hole Screws:
-
Select the correct screw size according to the chart on page 5.
-
Clamp joints in place to ensure a better finished joint. These examples show face joints and butt joints.
-
WARNING: When drilling, always ensure the workpiece is clamped securely.
-
Place your screw on the driver tip (J), position the screw in the pocket hole, and drive the screw until it is fully seated without overdriving
-
Repair Applications:
For repair applications, remove the drill guide (E) from the drill guide socket (B) and clamp it directly to the workpiece. When using the Standard drill guide (E) separately in a repair application, remember to set the drill- bit stop collar (H), and firmly secure the drill guide (E) to the workpiece with a bar clamp, C-clamp, or Kreg face clamp. In situations where using a clamp is not possible, you may screw the drill guide (E) directly to the workpiece, as shown. -
Vacuum Port:
This chip-collection attachment snaps into place on the back of the drill guide socket (B). The port accepts a standard 1-1/4 in. (32 mm) vacuum hose. In addition to helping keep your work area clean, efficient chip removal speeds drilling time and reduces heat buildup, extending the life of your drill bit (G).

**Tips
**
Reduce Wood Splitting
-
Test Pieces
Test the joint with scrap pieces cut from the same stock as your final workpiece. -
Make sure you’re using Kreg Screws
Kreg screws feature sharp, self-tapping tips that slice through the wood fibers. -
Use the Right Screw Type
Use fine-thread screws in hardwood. These #7 screws displace less wood than the #8 coarse-thread screws that are used for softwood, plywood, MDF, and particleboard. -
Drive Progressively
Drive the screw half-way in, back it out to clear excess wood fibers from the hole, and then drive the screw all the way in. -
Reduce Friction
Apply bee’s wax or other lubricant to the screw to reduce the friction as the screw enters the workpiece. -
Clamp Correctly
Center the clamp pad on the joint line to apply equal pressure to both workpieces and keep them from shifting. Firm clamping pressure forces the screw to slice through the wood instead of splitting it apart.
