ZED9 Backcountry Ski Bindings
This bulletin provides instructions on how to replace the ZED9 and
ZED12 Forward Pressure Spring.
The design of the ZED line of bindings incorporates a flex compensation
mechanism, commonly referred to as Forward Pressure. The flex compensation
allows for the binding to reliably maintain release values in dynamic skiing
conditions while the ski flexes.
The design of the mechanism is such that it does not lock out fore/aft
movement while in tour mode. Users experiencing greater than 3mm of when
walking in tour mode can exchange the normal Forward Pressure Spring (silver)
with a stiffer alternative (black) in order to reduce fore/aft movement.
The instructions below illustrate how to remove and replace the Forward
Pressure Spring.
Disassembly Procedure
- To remove the heel turret from the binding, start by backing the turret all the way back by unscrewing the fore/aft screw (Figure 1.) using a Pozi#3 screwdriver. Figure 1 – Remove heel turret from the base by unscrewing fore/aft screw
- Give the turret a quick pull when it reaches the end of the track to completely remove it from the track.
- Place the turret on a clean flat surface. With your screwdriver still inserted into the fore/aft screw and with one hand on the turret, push the screw forward and SLOWLY tilt the turret upwards (Figure 2 .) while using the flat surface as support, making sure the spring does not shoot away. Figure 2 – To pry the spring out, push the screw forward while rotating the turret as shown. Use a table as support to pivot about.
- Remove the silver spring and replace with the stiffer (Black) version
- Reinsert the 3 piece assembly (Worm Screw, Indexer and Spring) as shown in Figure 3 and Figure 4.
- Ensure the Indexer sits flat when you slide the turret back onto the track.
