Unpack the machine and check the components

USB cable
We recommend using a USB 2.0 cable (Type A/B) that is no more than 6 feet (2 meters) long.
Network cable
Use a straight-through Category 5e (or greater) twisted-pair cable.

How to Use

1: Remove the packing materials and install the drum unit and toner cartridge assembly

2: Load paper into the paper tray

3: Connect the power cord and turn on the machine

4: Connect the telephone line cord
If you do not plan to use the fax feature on this machine, go to step 5.

5: Select your language (if needed)

  1. On the machine’s Touchscreen, press *[Settings] > [All Settings] > [Initial Setup] > [Local Language]**.
  2. Press your language.
  3. Press .

[Settings] menu is MFC‑L8610CDW only.

6: Configure the machine for faxing
If you do not plan to use the fax feature on this machine, go to step 7.

NOTE:

  • For more information on using the fax feature, see the Online User’s Guide.
  • Your machine is programmed to automatically receive faxes. To change this default mode, see the Online User’s Guide.

A. Set the date and time
Press *[Settings] > [All Settings] > [Initial Setup] > [Date & Time]**, and then set the date and time you want.

B. Set the Station ID
*Press [Settings] > [All Settings] > [Initial Setup] > [Station ID]**, and then set your fax or telephone number and your name.

7: Select a device to connect to your machine

Computer

Go to 8 and follow the instructions.

Mobile Device

Go to 9 and follow the instructions.

Brother regularly updates firmware to add features and apply bug fixes. To check for the latest firmware, visit solutions.brother.com/up3.

Put the installation disc into your CD/DVD drive, or download the Full Driver & Software Package at:

If you are using a recently released operating system on your computer, visit the above websites for an updated driver and software information.

Follow the on-screen instructions and prompts.

For Windows:
If the Brother screen does not appear automatically, go to Computer (This PC). Double-click the CD/DVD-ROM icon, and then double-click start.exe.

For Network Users: Important Notice for Network Security
The default Web-Based Management password is located on the back of the machine and marked “ Pwd ”. We recommend immediately changing the default password to use network tools/utilities securely and to protect your machine from unauthorized access.

9: Alternative wireless setup

Find your SSID (Network Name) and Network Key (Password) on your wireless access point/ router and write them in the table provided below.

Even if you do not have a wireless access point/router, you can connect your device and your machine directly. For additional wireless network support, go to solutions.brother.com/wireless-support.

If you cannot find this information, ask your network administrator or wireless access point/router manufacturer.

If the setup is not successful, restart your Brother machine and your wireless access point/router, and repeat 9.

10: Print or scan using your mobile device
Your mobile device must be connected to the same wireless network as your Brother machine.

Brother SupportCenter is a mobile app that provides the latest support information for your Brother product. Visit the App Store or Google Play to download.

AirPrint is available for Apple device users. You do not need to download any software to use AirPrint. For more information, see the Online User’s Guide. Download and install our free application Brother iPrint&Scan from a mobile application store, such as the App Store, Google Play, or Microsoft® Store using your mobile device.

FAQ’s

What type of toner comes with this printer?****

The MFC-L8900CDW will come with a standard yield black toner (approx. 3,000 pages) and standard yield color toners (approx. 1,800 pages each).

Will the color toner “dry up” over time like color ink does in an inject printer?****

I left the country, and my old Brother color laser printer, for 3 years. No one even turned on the printer for those 3 years (I shut off the electricity). I came back, turned on the printer and it started printing black and white and color documents and images like nothing ever happened. Meanwhile, my Brother’s inkjet.

We want to be able to do about 10 pages of double-sided printing and have them come out collated in stacks. Will this do it?****

Yes, the printer will print double-sided very easily and can collate as well – just a simple check box in the print dialog box. You may need to go onto Brother’s support website and make sure you download the very latest printer driver for your OS, I had to do that for my iMac before the duplex function worked.

If I insert a USB drive into it can I access it from the Wi-Fi network? my old printer does it, I’m trying to upgrade but that is a big deal for me.****

The MFC-L8900CDW will let you print from and scan to a USB flash memory drive directly from the machine. The ability to access your storage device through the network printer using a computer is not supported.

How well does it print on cardstock?****

It prints well on card stock. It curves the paper but it’s easily straightened back out.

Does this one come with 2 trays to print legal and letter****

An optional second tray may be added, LT340CL, for about $200. It will hold up to legal (8-1/2 x 14).

Can the printer handle heavy card stock? (up to 110 lbs.)? 2. Does it come with toner (color and b/w)?****

The MFC-L8900CDW will come with a standard yield black toner (approx. 3,000 pages) and standard yield color toners (approx. 1,800 each). This machine will print on up to 43lb sheet weight using the multi-purpose tray. Here is a URL that you can reference for the recommended paper specifications for this machine.

I have files that include both portrait and landscape orientation. I had an older Brother that printed both without doing 2 runs. Will this do that?****

This machine is able to print documents that contain portrait and landscape orientation without creating multiple print jobs. Some applications may override this feature and we recommend contacting the manufacturer of the specific software for assistance.

Will this printer print Avery 5871 business card stock?****

The MFC-L8900CDW will support the following paper sizes: Letter, Legal, Executive, A4, A5, A6, Envelopes, and Custom Sizes (3.0-8.5″ (w), 5.0-14″ (l)). The supported sheet weight is 16-43 lbs.
