GENERAL SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS FOR POWER TOOLS
WARNING! All safety instructions, user manuals, images and directives supplied with this tool must be read. Failure to follow all of the following instructions may result in electric shock, fire, and/or serious personal injury. All instructions and the user manual must be kept for future reference. The term “power tool” in all the following warnings refers to a mains-powered tool (with a power cord) or a battery-powered tool (without a power cord). This manual applies only to power tools that are powered by a battery without a power cord.

Safety in the working environment
The workplace must be kept clean and well lit. Clutter and dark areas are often the cause of accidents. Power tools must not be used in potentially explosive atmospheres where flammable liquids, gases or dust are present. Power tools create sparks that can ignite dust or fumes. Children and other persons must be kept away when using power tools. If the operator is distracted, they may lose control of the operation.

Electrical safety
The operator must not touch grounded objects, such as pipes, central heating units, cookers and refrigerators. The risk of electric shock is greater if your body is connected to the ground.
Power tools must not be exposed to rain, moisture or wetness. If water enters a power tool, the risk of electric shock increases.
The tool may generate a weak electromagnetic field that is not ordinarily dangerous to humans. However, persons with pacemakers or similar devices should contact the manufacturer of the device or consult their physician before using the tool.

Safety of persons
When using a power tool, the operator must be careful, pay attention to what they are doing, concentrate and think clearly. Power tools must not be used if the operator is tired or under the influence of drugs, alcohol or medication. A moment’s inattention while using a power tool can result in serious personal injury. Use personal protective equipment. Always use eye protection. Protective equipment such as a respirator, non-slip safety shoes, hard hat and hearing protection, used in accordance with the working conditions, reduces the risk of personal injury. Unintentional starting of the machine must be avoided. Make sure that the switch is in the off position before connecting the battery, lifting or carrying the tool. Carrying the tool with your fin-ger on the switch or with the tool switched on can cause accidents.

All adjusting tools or wrenches must be removed before switching on the tool. An adjusting tool or wrench that remains attached to the rotating part of the power tool may result in personal injury. The operator must only work in places that they can safely reach. The operator must always maintain a stable posture and balance. This will allow better control of the power tool in unforeseen situations. The operator must dress appropriately. Do not wear loose clothing or jewellery. The operator must make sure that their hair and clothing are a sufficient distance away from moving parts. Loose clothing, jewellery and long hair can be caught up in moving parts.

Where equipment is provided for connecting dust extraction and collection facilities, care must be taken to ensure that it is connected and used correctly. The use of such equipment can reduce hazards caused by dust. The operator must not allow themselves to become lax and ignore the principles of work safety due to the routine that results from the frequent use of the tool. Careless actions can cause serious injuries in a split second.

Power tool use and maintenance
Power tools must not be overloaded. It is essential to use the correct power tool for the work being carried out. The correct power tool will do the work it was designed to do better and safer. Power tools that cannot be switched on and off with the switch must not be used. Any power tool that cannot be operated with the switch is dangerous and must be repaired.
The battery must be removed from the power tool before making any adjustments, changing accessories, or storing power tools. These precautions reduce the risk of accidentally starting the power tool.

Unused power tools must be stored out of the reach of children. Persons unfamiliar with the power tool or these instructions must not be allowed to use the power tool. Power tools are dangerous in the hands of inexperienced users. Power tools and accessories must be maintained. The adjustment and mobility of moving parts must be checked and attention paid to cracks, broken parts and any other circumstances that may compromise the function of the power tool. If the tool is damaged, it must be repaired before further use. Many accidents are caused by poorly maintained power tools.

Cutting tools must be kept sharp and clean. Prop-erly maintained and sharpened cutting tools are less likely to catch on material or jam and are easier to control. Power tools, accessories, tool bits, etc. must be used in accordance with these instructions and in the manner intended for the particular power tool, taking into account the working conditions and the work to be carried out. Using power tools for activities other than those for which they are designed can lead to dangerous situations. Handles and grip surfaces must be kept dry, clean and free of grease. Slippery handles and gripping surfaces mean the tool cannot be held and controlled in unexpected situations. Do not use cloth work gloves when using power tools as these can become entangled. Cloth work gloves becoming tangled in moving parts can cause personal injury.

Cordless power tool use and maintenance
The tool must only be charged with the charger specified by the manufacturer. A charger that may be suitable for one type of battery pack may cause a fire risk when used with another battery pack. The tool must only be used with a battery that is specifically designed for the tool. The use of any other batteries may cause a risk of injury or fire. When the battery is not in use, it must be protected from contact with other metal objects, such as paper clips, coins, keys, nails, screws, or other small metal objects that can cause one battery contact to come in contact with another. Short-cir-cuiting the battery terminals may cause burns or fire.
If used incorrectly, liquids may leak from the battery; contact with them should be avoided. In the case of accidental contact with these fluids, the affected area must be rinsed with water. In addition, seek medical attention if fluid gets into the eye. Liquids escaping from the battery can cause inflammation or burns. A damaged or modified battery or tool must not be used. A damaged or modified battery can exhibit unpredictable behaviour, which can result in fire, explosion, or the risk of injury. The battery or tool must not be exposed to fire or excessive heat. Exposure to fire or temperatures above 130°C may cause an explosion. All charging instructions must be followed, and the battery or tool must not be charged outside the temperature range specified in the operating instructions. Improper charging or charging at temperatures outside this range may damage the battery and increase the risk of fire.

Servicing
Power tool repairs must be carried out by qualified personnel using identical spare parts. This will ensure the same level of safety of the power tool as before the repair. Damaged batteries must never be repaired. Batteries should only be repaired by the manufacturer or an authorized service centre.

Operation

In case of danger, turn off the tool immediately.  Do not replace the nylon string with wire, rope, etc. If you notice unusual signs during operation (e.g. abnormal noise or vibration), turn off the tool and remove the battery. Do not resume use of the tool until the cause of the abnormality has been found and removed. The cutting blade continues to rotate for some time after the motor has been turned off. Avoid contact with the cutting blade.Use the shoulder strap. The tool is designed to be held to the right of the body. Do not lean in any direction. Stand straight and keep your balance at all times while using the tool. Continuously scan the work area for any hard-to-spot foreign objects, tree stumps or roots, sewer grilles, etc., to avoid stumbling or catching your tool on these. Take extra care when working on slopes. Walk forward slowly. Never run. Do not use the tool while on ladders, in trees etc. If the tool suffers a major collision or fall, check it for damage before continuing work. Check the proper function of control and safety elements. If you find any damage or have doubts as to the tool’s condition, bring it into an authorized service centre for inspection and repair. Do not touch the motor unit during and immediately after the operation. The motor becomes hot while running and may cause burns. Take regular breaks of at least 10 to 20 minutes after each hour of operation, in order to avoid dangerous situations due to operator fatigue. When leaving the tool unattended, even briefly, always remove the battery. An unattended tool with the battery still inside could be used by an unauthorized person, who could seriously injure themselves or others. If grass or twigs become caught between the cutting blade and protective cover, turn off the tool and remove the battery before clearing it out. Otherwise, the cutting blade could accidentally turn on and severely injure you.

Never touch any moving part until it has come to a full stop and you have removed the battery. If the cutting blade strikes a rock or another hard object, turn off the tool, remove the battery, and check for damage. Regularly inspect the cutting blade for cracks and other damage. Before any such inspection, turn off the tool, remove the battery, and wait for the moving parts to come to a complete stop. Even a slightly cracked cutting blade requires replacement. Do not lift the machine to mow at heights. The maximum height to which the machine can be raised is waist height. Do not use the machine at heights. Wait until the machine reaches maximum speed before mowing. When mowing, move the tool smoothly in a half arc left to right, as when using a scythe. Only hold the tool by its handles, which are insulated, in case the cutting blade strikes hidden power cables. In that case, the exposed metal parts of the tool can become “live” with electricity and pose an electrocution hazard. Do not turn on the tool if the cutting head is fouled by grass. Before starting the tool, check that the cutting blade is not touching the ground or foreign objects (e.g. trees). Always use both hands to hold the tool. Never hold a running tool in one hand.

Always switch off the machine and remove the battery:

  • whenever the machine is left unattended;
  • before removing a blockage;
  • before checking, cleaning or working on the machine;
  • after encountering a foreign object;
  • if the machine starts to vibrate excessively;
  • if you make adjustments and before replacing accessories and storing;
  • whenever you move the machine to another location.

Cutting tool

Only use cutting tools (cutting blades or nylon strings) supplied with the tool or recommended by the manufacturer.
The cutting tools are suitable for:

  • Nylon string: mowing grass
  • Cutting blade: mowing weeds, tall grass, bushes, undergrowth, thickets, etc.
  • Never use other types of cutting tools, such as metal rotary chains and mattock blades. These could cause serious injury.

Only use cutting tools rated for the same speed as the machine, or higher. Keep your hands, face, and clothing at a sufficient distance from moving cutting tools. There is a risk of serious injury. Always use a protective cover suitable for your type of cutting tool. Avoid recoil when using the tool.

Recoil
Recoil (blade pull) is a sudden reaction to a snagged or tangled cutting blade. When this happens, the tool is flung to the side or towards the operator with great force, and may cause serious injury. Recoil occurs primarily when a part of the cutting tool (in the arc between 12 and 2 o’clock positions) touches a hard object, such as a shrub or tree of more than 3 cm diameter.

To prevent recoil:

  • Increase the angle of contact (between 8 and 11 o’clock positions).
  • Prevent contact between the 12 and 2 o’clock positions.
  • Inexperienced or untrained operators working alone should avoid contact at angles of 11-12 o’clock and 2-5 o’clock.alza-Tools-AT-CBBC40V-Cordless-Brush-Cutter-Sting-Trimmer- \(39\)
  • Do not use the cutting tool close to solid objects such as fences, walls, tree stumps, rocks, etc.
  • Never use the tool for vertical lawn edge or hedge trimming.

Vibrations
Persons with cardiovascular disorders may suffer vascular or nerve damage from excessive vibration exposure. Vibration may cause the following symptoms in fingers, hands, or wrists: loss of feeling, pins-and-needles sensation, pain, stabbing pain, skin discoloration, skin loss. If you develop any of these symptoms, seek medical treatment. To reduce the risk of “white finger” (Raynaud’s phenomenon), keep your hands warm while working and maintain the tool and its accessories in good order.

Transport
Before transporting the tool, turn it off and remove the battery. If the tool is equipped with a protective cover, put it on. Carry the tool horizontally, holding it by the shaft. When transporting the tool by vehicle, secure it against moving in the cargo compartment. Damage to the tool or property may result otherwise.

OPERATION

Intended use
This tool is designed for personal use for mowing grass (trimmer configuration) or mowing shrubs, bushes, undergrowth, weeds, and tall grass (brush cutter configuration) in gardens, e.g. around rocks, under benches, trees and in hard-to-reach places. Do not use it for commercial or other purposes.

Switching On/Off
Before switching on the tool, make sure that:

  • It is correctly assembled;
  • All fuses are properly secured and all bolts and nuts are fully tightened;
  • The battery packs are inserted correctly;
  • The battery packs are fully charged.

For safety reasons, the tool is equipped with a safety catch to prevent unintentional starting. To start the tool, first press the safety catch, then press the on/off switch (Fig. L). The tool will start. As soon as the switch is released, the tool switches off and stops automatically.

  • Warning: After switching off the trimmer, always wait until the nylon string/cutting blade has come to a complete stop. Never use the tool if it can be started by pressing the switch alone without the safety catch. In this case, contact an authorized service centre. The safety catch is damaged.
  • Warning: Do not disable the safety catch or attempt to bypass the safety system. Do not attempt to force the switch without first depressing the safety catch.

Reverse
Warning: Before removing the twigs, grass, or weeds caught in the tool that were not removed by reversing it, turn off the tool and remove the battery. Otherwise, the tool may accidentally turn on, potentially causing severe injury.
The tool is equipped with a reverse switch, which reverses the rotation direction of the cutting tool. Reverse mode should only be used to clear twigs, grass, and weeds from the cutting blade/nylon string.
To run the tool in reverse, first press the reverse switch, then press the on/off switch (Fig. M). Pressing the reverse switch plays a sound alert, then activates reverse mode. Release the on/off switch to turn off the reversing tool. Wait for the moving parts to come to a complete stop, then continue mowing in normal (non-reverse) mode.
Note: When switching between forward and reverse mode, always wait for the tool to come to a complete stop to avoid damage to the moving parts.

Electric brake
The tool is equipped with an electric brake system that quickly stops the moving parts when the on/ off switch is released. If the brake fails to engage when the on/off switch is released, bring the tool in for servicing at an authorized service centre.
Warning: The presence of the electric brake system does not mean the tool can be used without the protective cover. Never use the tool without a securely attached protective cover. Otherwise, severe injury may occur.

Electric smooth start system
The tool is equipped with an electric system that increases rotation speed gradually when starting, dampening the recoil that would otherwise occur in a hard start and allowing a gradual, soft start.

Proper handling

  • Warning: The tool is designed for use on the right side of the body. Only use it on this side to achieve maximum control and reduce risk of severe injury in case of recoil.
  • Warning: Take good care to keep the tool under control at all times. Prevent the tool from coming too close to the operator or other persons that may be present in the vicinity. Failing to control the tool may cause severe injury to the operator or bystanders.
  • Warning: To avoid accidents, remain at least 15 m away from other tool operators when working in a group. In this case, appoint an overseer to monitor the separation between workers at all times. If another person or animal enters the work area, turn off the tool immediately.
  • Warning: If you strike a rock or other hard object with a running tool, turn it off, remove the battery and check the cutting blade/nylon string for damage. If the cutting tool is damaged, have it replaced with an original part. The tool may not be used if the cutting blade/nylon string is damaged. Otherwise, severe injury may result, including fatal injury.

When using the tool (Fig. N1):

  1. Hold the tool with both hands at an angle of about 50° to the ground.
  2. Stand upright and fast.
  3. Move slowly from side to side.
  4. Keep your balance at all times while using the tool.
  5. Always be confident when standing on slopes and walking.
  6. Never run.

Do not lean, bend or stand on one leg, etc.
Trimming shrubs and tall grass Always trim shrubs and tall grass in parts, top to bottom (Fig. N2), to prevent long twigs or grass blades from entangling the cutting blade. Keep the cutting blades off the ground. Ground contact may damage the motor unit or the tool as a whole. It also produces recoil, which may cause serious injury. When trimming thick shrubs or grass, carefully use the end of the cutting blade to make several shortcuts. When trimming shrubs or grass near trees, walls, rocks, etc., keep the blade at a safe distance of 5 cm from the obstacle. Keep the cutting blades from touching the obstacle.

Mowing grass
Cut the grass from top to bottom. Do not allow the nylon string to touch the ground or any obstacles (Fig. N3). This may damage it. Do not use the tool to dig or burrow into the ground (Fig. N4).
Warning: Do not try to mow long or thick grass in one cut (Fig. N5). Tall grass can wrap around the trimmer head, jam and cause the motor unit to overheat. This could damage the tool.
When mowing grass near trees, blocks, walls, rocks, etc., lift and tilt the tool so as to keep the nylon string off the ground (Fig. N6). Mow the grass at short intervals from top to bottom. Carefully mow the grass around trees or other obstacles to avoid contact between the obstacle and the nylon string. We recommend keeping a safe distance of 5 cm from a tree or other obstacle. If the nylon string comes into contact with a tree or other obstacle, it may fray or snap. In that case, it must be replaced immediately.

Overload protection
If you use the tool or battery in a way that causes abnormally high power draw, the tool will automatically stop; there is no warning indicator. If this happens, release the switch to turn off the tool and stop the operation that caused it to overload. Then turn it on again.
Overheating protection
If the tool or battery overheats, the tool will automatically stop. If this happens, release the switch to turn off the tool and let the tool and the battery cool down. Then turn it on again.
Protection against excessive discharge
If the charge level drops excessively, the tool will automatically stop. If this happens, release the switch to turn off the tool. Remove the battery packs and charge them.
Note: Overload, overheating and over-discharge protection are the trimmer and battery safety systems that protect them from damage. Do not attempt to bypass or modify these security features. There is a risk of serious injury or death.

MAINTENANCE AND STORAGE

Warning: Before any maintenance or cleaning work, always make sure the tool is switched off and the battery is removed.
The user must only carry out the maintenance and cleaning described in this manual. For any other maintenance, cleaning or adjustment, contact an authorized service centre. Clean the tool after each use. This will ensure its long life. Remove dust and dirt from the tool. Turn the tool upside down and remove grass residue from the cutting blade/nylon string and the inside of the protective cover. If the tool is heavily soiled, wipe it with a clean, slightly damp cloth. Wipe dry with a clean cloth.

Warning: Do not immerse any part of the tool in water or other liquids. Do not use a hose or pressure washer for cleaning. Do not expose the tool to dripping or splashing water.
Remove any dirt from the ventilation holes. Use a dry cloth. Never allow water to enter the ventilation holes. There is a risk of damage to the motor unit.
Warning: Do not use petrol, thinner, alcohol or other similar substances for cleaning. There is a risk of deformation, cracking, or damage to the finish.

Nylon string replacement
Warning: Only use nylon string of the manufacturer-recommended thickness of 2 mm. Do not use nylon string of different thickness, metal wire, rope, etc. This may damage the tool, and such damage is not covered by warranty. It also presents a risk of severe, potentially fatal injury.
Warning: Make sure the head cover is firmly attached, as described below. Otherwise, the nylon string may be flung away from the tool at high speed, sufficient to cause serious injury.

To replace the nylon string, follow this procedure:

  1. Gently press the catches on both sides of the head cover (Fig. O1) and remove the cover and the string spool (Fig. O2).
  2. Insert the new nylon string spool into the head cover so that the free ends of the string thread into the grooves in the cover (Fig. O3 and O4).
  3. Push the spool and cover assembly in until it clicks into place (Fig. O5).
  4. Verify that the nylon string is properly attached and the automatic feed is working.

Storage
Before storing, make sure the tool is switched off, clean (especially the area around the cutting blade/nylon string), and that the battery is removed from the motor unit. Store the tool in a dry, well-ventilated area out of the reach of children, pets and persons who have not been instructed in its safe use. Only store the tool inside buildings.
Fully charge the battery and store it in a dry and well-ventilated area where the temperature does not commonly fall below freezing. During long-term storage, recharge the battery every three months to prolong its life.
