Inspection, points to verify
Your safety depends upon the integrity of your equipment. Petzl recommends a
detailed inspection at least once every 12 months.
WARNING: your intensity of use may cause you to inspect your PPE more
frequently. Follow the procedures described at Petzl.com.
Record the results on your PPE inspection form.
Before each use
Before each use, check the general condition of your crampons. Verify that the
front and rear bindings (and antibott system, if present) are in good
condition and properly adjusted.
Check the condition and tension of the adjustment cord.
Make sure there are no cracks in the body or the points, especially on the
front points.
During use
Regularly verify that your crampons are properly adjusted and tightened. Check
the tension in the cord; adjust if necessary.
Compatibility
Verify that this product is compatible with the other elements of the system
in your application (compatible = good functional interaction).
Make sure that your boots are compatible with your crampons.
Warning: using a boot with an unsuitable binding system can result in
loss of the crampon.
Always carry out a compatibility test before using your equipment in the
field. Crampons may not always be adaptable to certain boots.
Fitting to your boots
Before any use, adjust your crampons to fit your boots. Warning: crampons are
asymmetric and must be adjusted separately for each foot.
A. Adjusting the front binding system
The front holes allow the length of the front points to be adjusted.
Tip for unfastening the FIL FLEX.
B. Rear binding system adjustment
The rear holes allow adjustment of the heel lever height.
C. Size adjustment
Use the notches on the rear part to adjust the cord to the correct length.
Repeat the process as many times as necessary. Once mounted on the boot, the
cord must be very taut.
D. Strap adjustment
The DOUBLEBACK buckle must always be positioned on the outside of the foot.
Optional adjustment of LEOPARD FL on lightweight boots: with the cord set
at maximum length, pass the strap around the cord on each side of the boot.
The strap then allows the cord to be tightened and the crampon length to be
adjusted to fit the boot.
E. Function test
Verify the cord is properly tensioned along its entire length. Take several
steps in the crampons to ensure they are securely attached to the boots.
During first use, the cord settles into place and can loosen slightly.
If necessary, adjust the settings.
Warning: a poorly adjusted crampon can result in loss of the crampon.
Antibott system
Warning: even when using an antibott system, you must always beware of
snow buildup under the crampons, which increases the risk of slipping and
falling.
Antibott system not included with LEOPARD LLF and LEOPARD FL. If repeated
problems with snow buildup occur, install an antibott system (sold
separately).
Replacing the cord
If worn, replace the adjustment cord only with a Petzl CORD-TEC (T01A COR) replacement cord.
