DESCRIPTION
The Canon Remote Controller RC-6 is a wireless transmitter that sends signals via infrared. It requires a receiver to function. Unlike most wireless controllers, the RC-6 receiver is already built into a variety of EOS models. One reason the RC-6 is so cheap (under £20) is that you are only purchasing half of the system. So long as you have a compatible camera, you have already paid for the other half. The RC-6 is compatible with most Canon EOS cameras as well as a few PowerShot models.
You can shoot remotely up to 5 meters/16.4 feet away from the camera’s front. You have the option of shooting immediately or after a 2-second delay.

- Point the remote controller toward the remote-control sensor on the camera (1) and press the release (transmit) button.
- When the focus mode switch is set to AF, autofocusing occurs.
- The remote-control lamp illuminates, and the camera fires.
CAUTION
- When the camera is paired via Bluetooth with a smartphone or wireless remote control, infrared remote controllers such as the RC-6 cannot be used for remote control shooting.
- Fluorescent or LED lighting may cause an unintentional shutter release. Keep the camera as far away from these light sources as possible.
- Using a TV remote control or similar device aimed at the camera may result in an unintentional shutter release.
- Other cameras’ flash units firing near the camera may cause an accidental shutter release. Avoid exposing the remote-control sensor to flash from other cameras.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the maximum distance between the remote controller and the camera?
The maximum distance is approximately 16.4 feet.
What is the effective range of the remote controller?
The effective range depends on the environment. For example, if you are in a room with a lot of sunlight, the effective range will be shorter. In most cases, however, it is about 5 meters/16.4 feet.
Can I use the wireless remote controller with my EOS camera that does not have a built-in receiver?
No, you must use a compatible camera that has a built-in receiver to use this remote controller.
Since so many different users have asked so many redundant questions, I can’t help but ask this: will it work to remotely start a ’57 Chevy?
I’m not sure about that year. I think only with fuel injected. Seems to start my ’03 jeep fine remotely but only when left in neutral.
Does anyone know of a reflective setup in order for us to use the remote from behind? Are there plans for a simple build or even a manufactured unit?
There are a lot of other remotes that aren’t very expensive that include their own receiver that mount on the flash shoe (plus they will work if you leave it dangling in case you need the flash too). Probably a much simpler solution.
Does this have the ability to lock open the camera, it said it was compatible with bulb mode, is that what that means?
It is absolutely compatible with bulb mode, but the RC-6 does require that its remote-control infrared transmitter be able to see the infrared receiver on the front of the camera. That means being at least slightly ahead of the camera and to the right of the lens, which shouldn’t interfere with any picture taking.
what is the range?
I have tested this extensively using this remote, a T3i camera, and a tape measure. Indoors, outdoors, day, and night, the range is exactly 22 feet. 23 feet is too far.
What type of batteries does it use & are they easily replaceable?
CR2032 Energizer lithium batteries, I got a 5-pack for about 3.00.
does it work without delay?
You can set it to instant or 2 second delay.
Does this RC-6 Wireless controller come with the case for putting it on the camera strap?
yes it has slits on the back of the case but you have to take the strap off your camera to insert it thru, it is a nice case for the remote. I just put mine in my bag, it does not work at a great distance but better than using the timer.
Will this remote work w/ the canon 7d mark ii?
Yes, but you have to change the shooting settings. Down on the bottom of your display it has the single shot icon. That icon opens to the burst, self-timer, and remote. Once changed you can shoot with the remote, the sensor is the little circle about where your middle finger sits on the grip.
