Butterfly Table Runner
2 DAY CLASS
In class #1 we will have the overview of the entire project, begin the
construction of the circles and learn the applique technique.
Class #2 will be the joining and finishing techniques. You will have
constructed and quilted all the circles at home before this second class.
Additional detail during Class #1.
Goals for this class:
- Learn the “orange peel” technique
- Try the turned edge applique procedure using removeable templates
- Apply either a bound-edge finish, or a faced-edge finish
Note to students: Please arrive in time to set up before the class start-time, with fabrics selected and ready. Please prepare your fabrics in the usual way before coming to class – washing is recommended and starching is optional, at your discretion, but they should be pressed to lay flat. This can be made with or without appliqué – see photos or samples.
- Butterfly table runner pattern (available at PS&V or can be purchased directly from instructor the day of class – $10)
- 1 yard background fabric for the front of the runner
- yard backing fabric – this will be needed in class – (keep in mind, several inches of this will be turned to the front, so the 2 fabrics must coordinate)
- Batting – this will be needed in class – 15 X 60 or one 15” square for each circle used
- Finishing products – bias binding (50” per circle), or 2 packages of Rick Rack or lace trim
- Heat Resistant Mylar template material – or Freezer paper
- Silicone spatula or other heat resistant extension for your hand(optional)
- 2 hand-sewing needles & thread
Standard sewing supplies for class:
- Rotary cutter with fresh blade, mat & rulers
- Scissors, pins, stiletto or bamboo skewer
- Removable marking pen, pencil or another implement
- Extra bobbins, thread and machine needles
- Glue stick or Wonder Tape (pressure sensitive – not fusible – double-sided adhesive)
- Thread in all pertinent colors for top-stitching all appliqués
- Iron and ironing surface (optional – the store provides some)
- Sewing machine & manual
*Heat Resistant Mylar template material and Freezer paper both work well, but differently. Mylar is more expensive, but also more durable. I will demonstrate how to use both.
