Product codes – 597819 / 597820 / 597821 / 597822 / 597823 / 597824
This manual applies to Center Heating Expansion Vessels 4L, 8L, 12L, 18L, 25L & 35L.
The Center Heating Expansion Vessels are compliant with the Pressure Equipment Directive 2014/68/EU, Pressure Equipment (Safety) Regulations 2016 and BS EN 13831.

General

Items included are one Center Heating Expansion Vessel (fig.1 A) Information on the manufacturer, year of construction and other technical data is displayed on the product label (fig.1 B), Scan QR code on product label to access Installation and Operating Instructions.

Application
Center Heating Expansion Vessels are intended solely for use in closed central heating and cooling installations (with additives based on a glycol to a maximum of 50%).
For the min/max permissible temperature on the membrane and for the maximum permissible working pressure and system temperature: please see the label.

Safety

  • The expansion vessel is delivered with a pre-charge.
  • The installation must be carried out by competent personnel, observing local legislation and guidelines.
  • The bracket must be able to carry the weight of a full expansion vessel.
  • Install and operate Center Expansion Vessels only if the vessel is free from visible damage.
  • In order to keep within operating parameters, appropriate safety accessories must be fitted.
  • Disregard of this manual may lead to defects in the vessel, impairment of its function, personal injury or damage to property.
  • Ensure that the maximum operating pressure is equal or lower than the maximum working pressure shown on the vessel label.
  • The connection between the expansion vessel and the heating appliance must always be open.

Installation

  1. Flush the installation through before installing the vessel (never via the safety valve) and check the installation for leaks whilst under pressure.
  2. Expansion vessels with a capacity of 4 – 25 liters should not be installed suspended from the water nipple (fig.2 E). Use a Center Heating Vessel Universal Wall Mount (597815) Center Heating Vessel Pro Wall Mount (597816) or Center Heating Vessel Pro Fitting Kit (597817) as appropriate.
  3. The Center Heating Expansion Vessel with a capacity of 35 liters is only suitable for floor standing installation – do not attempt to wall mount this size of vessel (fig.3 E).
  4. Install the vessel in the return line, as close as possible to the boiler, on the intake side of the pump. Install the vessel so that the water it contains cannot circulate.
  5. Apply PTFE tape (fig.5 G) (do not use hemp!) to the connection of the expansion vessel.
  6. If possible, it is advisable to place the optional connection group in the expansion line for easy maintenance.

First Use / Commissioning
If the factory-set pre-charge does not match the calculated pre-charge for the installation, the pre-charge must be adjusted. The water side of the vessel should be empty while adjusting the pre-charge.
Remove the cover cap (H) and the valve cap (I) and adjust the pre-charge to the required setting using a suitable Vessel Pressurisation Pump. Re-install the valve cap (I) and cover cap (H). (fig. 9)

In the commissioning sequence:

  1. Open the bleed points. (fig. 6)
  2. Fill the installation slowly until the water matches the pre-charge. Bleed the system during filling. (fig. 7)
  3. Bleed the pipe to the expansion vessel. (fig. 7)
  4. Close the bleed points. (fig. 8)
  5. Heat the system to the maximum working temperature for half a day and bleed regularly.
  6. When the water temperature has fallen to approximately 50°C, top up the installation to 0.3 bar above the pre-charge of the expansion vessel. Ensure that the filling hose is bled.

Maintenance

The expansion vessel must be checked annually. Should water escape from the safety valve, proceed as follows:

  • Check the outward condition of the vessel for damage or corrosion.
  • Disconnect the vessel and check the gas pre-charge and, if necessary, set to the correct pressure as described in point 2: Installation.

In case the vessel or diaphragm is damaged:

  • Shut off the vessel from the system.
  • Drain the vessel.
  • Exchange the vessel
  • Check the gas pre-charge and if necessary set to the required value as described in point 2 Installation.

De-installation

  1. Allow the installation to cool down and release the pressure from it.
  2. Remove the cover cap (H) and the valve cap (I). (fig. 9).
  3. Push the inner valve (J) in to drain the pressure from the expansion vessel. (fig. 10).
  4. Unscrew the expansion vessel (A). (fig. 11).
Caution: The water in the vessel may be hot! Only check the system when the water has cooled off.
Caution: The weight of the vessel may be greater than expected, as it may be filled with water.
