ADJUSTING THE BRAKES

  1. If the brakes are loose and require tightening, this can be achieved by adjusting NUT A and SCREW B on the brake lever, where the cable terminates.
  2.  Figure 14 shows the brake in its fully loose condition, with SCREW B fully tightened to NUT A.
  3. To tighten the brake cable, loosen SCREW B + NUT A, then re-tighten NUT A; this will add tension to the brake cable.
  4. This procedure can be repeated and reversed to establish the required tension in the cable.
  5. After adjustment, check the park brakes by pressing forwards on the brake levers and ensuring they both lock into place and brake the wheel.
  6. With the park brakes ‘off’, raise the 2 braked wheels off the ground and ensure they both move freely. If either of the wheels rub on the brake surface, repeat the adjustment procedure as required.
  7. It is important to check brake adjustments on a regular basis to take into account wear from normal use. The brakes should be checked at least once a month and prior to a change of user.
  8. Further Adjustment: If the brakes have been fully adjusted at the handle end of the cable, additional adjustment can be achieved at the wheel end: using a spanner or pair of pliers to hold NUT D, loosen BOLT C with an Allen Key. This will release the grip on the brake cable. Pull the brake cable downwards to add tension to the cable and secure by retightening BOLT C.
