Product Usage Instructions

Installing and Removing the Sled Accessory

  1. Unlock the SAM socket by sliding it towards the unlock position.
  2. Open the SAM socket door.
  3. Insert a SAM card into a SAM slot with contacts facing down and the cut edge towards the top.
  4. Close the SAM socket door and slide to the lock position.
  5. Re-install the access cover using a T8 Torx Security screwdriver.
  6. To install the Smart Ticketing Sled Accessory to a TC56:
  7. Insert the bottom of the TC56 into the bottom of the sled accessory base.
  8. Align the top cap onto the top of the device.
  9. Push the top cap firmly onto the top of the TC56 to secure it in place.
  10. To remove the sled accessory:
  11. Gently push the sides of the top cap outward slightly and lift it off.
  12. Slide the sled accessory base off of the TC56.

Charging

  1. Remove the cup insert before inserting the device for charging.
  2. Insert the device into the slot for charging and ensure proper seating.
  3. The 4,300 mAh battery charges from fully depleted to 90% in approximately 2.5 hours and to 100% in about 3 hours.

Hand Strap Mount
You can use the hand strap mount for added convenience and security while using the device with the sled accessory.

  1. Q: Can I use NDEF formatted NFC tags with the Smart Ticketing Sled Accessory?
    A: No, the Smart Ticketing Sled Accessory does not support NDEF formatted NFC tags.

Introduction
The Smart Ticketing Sled Accessory reads and writes HF RFID data and performs high speed secure transactions. The sled accessory is used with the Zebra TC56 touch computer.
The Smart Ticketing Sled Accessory reads HF RFID enabled transportation tickets and NFC enabled devices that emulate smart tickets using an HF RFID antenna and SAM (Secure Access Module) cards for secure transactions. The sled accessory can also read and write NFC contactless tickets, including C.tickets.

NOTE: The Smart Ticketing Sled Accessory does not support NDEF formatted NFC tags.

The sled accessory supports ISO 14443 Type A and Type B smart card variants:

  • MIFARE®
  • Calypso
  • ITSO
  • FeliCa
  • C.tickets

Features

Installing a SAM Card

To install the SAM cards:

  1. Use a T8 Torx Security screwdriver to remove the two M2-0.4 screws and O-rings from the SAM access cover.

  2. Remove SAM access cover.

  3. To unlock the SAM socket, slide it towards the unlock position.

  4. Open the SAM socket door.

  5. Insert a SAM card into a SAM slot with the contacts facing down and the cut edge towards the top of the sled accessory.
    NOTE: SAM1 is the default socket.

  6. Close the SAM socket door and slide to the lock position.

  7. Re-install the access cover.

  8. Use a T8 Torx Security screwdriver to replace the two SAM access cover screws and O-rings. Torque to 3.0 +/- 0.5 Kgf-cm.

NOTE: The O-Rings, found on the SAM access cover screws, must be replaced each time the SAM door is opened to ensure proper sealing. If a screw or O-ring is missing, contact Zebra customer support.

Installing and Removing the Sled Accessory

To install the Smart Ticketing Sled Accessory to a TC56:

  1. Insert the bottom of the TC56 into the bottom of the sled accessory base.
  2. Align the top cap onto the top of the device.
  3. Push the top cap firmly onto the top of the TC56. The top cap snaps onto the sled accessory base to secure it in place.

NOTE: While the sled accessory is installed, NFC on the TC56 is disabled.

To remove the sled accessory:

  1. Using thumbs, gently push the sides of the top cap outward slightly and lift the top cap off the sled accessory base.
  2. Slide the sled accessory base off of the TC56.

NOTE: To replace the battery on the TC56, remove the Smart Ticketing Sled Accessory.
After the battery is installed, replace the sled accessory.

Charging

To charge a device:

  1. Remove the cup insert before inserting the device.
  2. Insert the device into the slot to begin charging.
  3. Ensure the device is seated properly.
    The 4,300 mAh battery charges from fully depleted to 90% in approximately 2.5 hours and from fully depleted to 100% in approximately 3 hours.

Operation

  1. Attach the Smart Ticketing Sled Accessory to a TC56. See Installing and Removing the sled accessory.
  2. Power on the TC56.
  3. Run the Mobile Ticketing application.
  4. Align the antenna on the sled accessory with the ticket. The antenna must be within 20 mm of ticket.

Power Management

Observe the following battery saving tips:

  • Set the screen to turn off after a short period of non-use.
  • Reduce screen brightness. See Setting the Screen Brightness.
  • Turn off all wireless radios when not in use. Note that the global positioning system (GPS) receiver is only turned on when a GPS application is using the GPS radio.
  • Turn off automatic syncing for Email, Calendar, Contacts, and other applications.
  • Minimize use of applications that keep the TC56 from suspending, for example, music, GPS, and video applications.

Troubleshooting
The following table provides typical problems and solutions.

You are reminded of the need to observe restrictions on the use of radio devices in fuel depots, chemical plants etc. and areas where the air contains chemicals or particles (such as grain, dust, or metal powders) and any other area where you would normally be advised to turn off your vehicle engine.

Safety in Aircraft
Switch off your wireless device whenever you are instructed to do so by airport or airline staff. If your device offers a ‘flight mode’ or similar feature, consult airline staff as to its use in flight.

Safety in Hospitals
Pacemakers
Pacemaker manufacturers recommended that a minimum of 15 cm (6 inches) be maintained between a handheld wireless device and a pacemaker to avoid potential interference with the pacemaker. These recommendations are consistent with independent research and recommendations by Wireless Technology Research.

Persons with Pacemakers:

  • Should ALWAYS keep the device more than 15 cm (6 inches) from their pacemaker when turned ON.
  • Should not carry the device in a breast pocket.
  • Should use the ear furthest from the pacemaker to minimize the potential for interference.
  • If you have any reason to suspect that interference is taking place, turn OFF your device.
