IMPORTANT
TORSION SPRINGS CAN BE VERY DANGEROUS IF THEY ARE IMPROPERLY INSTALLED OR
MISHANOL£0. 00 NOT ATTEMPT TO INSTALI_ THEM YOURSELF UNLESS
- YOU HA VE THE RIGHT TOOLS ANO REASONABLE MECHANICAL APTITUDE OR EXPERIENCE ANO
- YOU FOUOW THESE INSTRUCTIONS VERY CAREFULLY
TOOLS REQUIRED
- A pair of 112 x 17.2 winding rods and a pair of non-slip gloves are included in this package
- It is important that you DO NOT ATTEMPT removal or adjustment of torsion springs with any tool other than the winding rods Failure to do so may result in personal injury or property damage.
SPRING IDENTIFICATION
Please see the illustrations under Spring Selection Guide to assure that the
proper replacement spring has been selected and, in the case of dual spring
installations, proper use of LEFT WIND & RIGHT WIND SPRINGS is imperative.
When dual spring installations ore involved, it is important to replace both
springs. Always replace both torsion springs at the same time, even if only
one is broken. This ensures that the tension remains even on both sides.
IDENTIFY TORSION SPRINGS
Springs are single or in pairs based on door design and track system. It is
important to determine the ‘wind’ of a spring before installation. A right
hand wound spring will have a red winding plug. A left hand wound spring will
have a block winding plug. Coble drums are also color coded. The red drum will
be on the left side of the spring assembly and the block drum on the right
side. Match color of winding plug on spring with drum.
TORSION SPRING REMOVAL
WARNING
FAILURE TO USE APPROVED WINDING RODS CAN CAUSE SPRING ENERGY TO BE RELEASED
SUDDENLY, RESULTING IN SEVERE OR FATAL INJURY.
WARNING
COUNTERBALANCE SPRING TENSION MUST BE RELIEVED BEFORE REMOVING ANY HARDWARE. A
POWERFUL SPRING RELEASING IT’S ENERGY SUDDENLY CAN CAUSE SEVERE OR FATAL
INJURY.
To remove the defective torsion spring; close door and manually lock. Disconnect automatic opener arm (if applicable). If dual springs ore involved, always start with the undamaged spring first!
-
Step 1: Close the door and place vice clomps onto the back legs of both vertical tracks, above the third roller to prevent the door from lifting as you unwind the springs. Use only approved winding bars available. Do not use undersized steel rods, screw drivers or anything else to unwind the springs. Position the ladder just off to the side of the winding cone. The winding cone should be easy to reach without putting your body directly in front of it.
-
Step 2: Insert a winding bar into one of the holes in the winding cone. Exert upward pressure. Using caution, loosen the two (2) set screws in the winding cone. Be prepared to support the full torsional force of the spring when the set screws are loosened.
-
Step 3: Once set screws are loose, slowly and carefully lower the winding rod until it rests against the door. Insert other winding bar into e the upper hole. Push up and remove lower bar.
Carefully lower upper winding bar until it rests against the door. Repeat process until all tension is relieved. If your door is equipped with two (2) torsion springs, follow the same procedure to relieve tension on the second spring. -
Step 4: Remove vice clamps from tracks, unbolt torsion shaft assembly and remove from work area.
INSTALLING REPLACEMENT SPRINGS
Check carefully to insure that the correctly wound spring (left and right hand) is being used on the appropriate side.
- Step 1: Slide new torsion springs onto the torsion bar. Slide each torsion spring onto the torsion bar the some way you removed the old springs, with the stationary cone toward the center.
- Step 2: Slide the drums back onto the torsion bar and place the bar bock into the end bearing plate. Use a wrench to tighten the screws on each drum.
- Step 3: Bolt springs together at center plate. Use a drill to bolt the stationary cones of each torsion spring to the center plate.
- Do not set drum at this time.
- If two springs ore being replaced, repeat this procedure. Remember, when replacing a single or double spring installation, the second drum must also be replaced.
- SETTING DRUMS : Vise grips will be required to hold the shaft. Starting with the left side, be sure the cable stop is securely attached into the drum slot at the left hand side of drum. Then pull drum down until cable is taut. Tighten set screws. Attach vise grip to shaft, pressing firmly against header and clamp. Leave vise in place until springs are wound in order to insure that drum and shaft remain stationary. Repeat procedure for right drum setting. Important: Both drum slots must be in exactly the same position. This will keep the cable from coming loose when door is being lifted.
WINDING SPRINGS WARNING
Springs under tension are an extreme hazard. If you ore unclear on how to correctly tension the door spring then seek the advice of a trained professional.
- Insert two winding rods into the spring.
- Rotate the bars upwards, ensuring a firm grip is always maintained an at least one of the torsion bars at all.
- Note: to achieve the correct tension, the spring should be wound o full turn for every foot in door height.
- E.g. an 8 foot door will be wound 8 full turns.
- Once the correct tension is achieved. tighten the two grub screws with a 10mm open ended spanner.
Final Check
Remove the clomps from the axle and test the doors movement. The door should
lift up and down with pressure from one hand and be stationary with no added
pressure.
