Activity Instructions
- Prepare all of your supplies (template, glue stick, scissors, and pens).
- Decide on your designs and decorate your dice. Do you want to create a traditional die or maybe create a game of some sort?
- Cut out along the solid lines, then fold the dotted lines or tabs.
- Start by gluing the tabs and gently press each flap on the backside of the square or triangle it touches.
6-sided die—Cube
A traditional die is a cube with each of its six faces marked with a different number of dots (pips) from 1 to 6. When thrown or rolled, the die comes to rest showing a number from 1 to 6 on its upper surface, with each value having an equal chance of rolling. A cube features 6 square faces and in many ways is like a square, only in 3 dimensions rather than 2. What kind of game can you make? Could you number the dice? Or maybe write the name of an activity on each face? Throw the dice and whatever activity it lands on is what you have to do! Get creative!
8-Sided Die—Octahedron
An 8-sided die is a three-dimensional shape called an octahedron. An
octahedron is a polyhedron with 8 triangular faces. A regular octahedron, such
as our 8-sided die, is one in which all 8 faces are equilateral triangles. It
is one of the 5 regular platonic solids, which were named after Plato, a
philosopher from Ancient Greece. Activity idea for your 8-sided die! Write the
names of famous people throughout history, or in pop culture on the blank
faces. Roll the dice and whoever it lands on, you can re-enact a scene that
the
character or person is famous for! Die game idea for your 10-sided die! For
2–6 players, 1 die. You will need paper and a pencil, plus chips or matches to
keep score. Aim of the game: To be the first player to lose all of your chips.
How to play: Draw a gameboard with 6 numbered spaces. All players take 5
chips or matches each. The turn order is clockwise. When it is your turn you
roll the die until you get a number between 1 and 6. If the corresponding
space is empty (2 for example), put a chip there; but if there already is a
chip there, you take it. If you roll a 6, you always put one of your chips on
space number 6 – regardless of how many chips are there already. Chips on
space number 6 are out of the game, and you never pick these up again.
The first player to get rid of all of their chips is the winner.
10-Sided Die – Pentagonal Trapezohedron
10-sided dies are often used in role-playing games, such as Dungeons and Dragons, to get random decimal numbers, such as percentages. Each die is generally a decahedron called a pentagonal trapezohedron with 10kite-e- shaped faces. To improve rolling, the edges are usually rounded.
The basic shape is 2-five-sided pyramids stuck together on their pentagonal face, one rotated by 36 degrees. Opposite sides on such a die total 9. Each face has 2 long sides and 2 short sides. The 5 odd numbered faces meet at the common vertex of their long sides.
