Air Intake Overview

Any Flare Fireplace with a Cool Glass safety barrier or Blower Kit system requires an Air Intake in the framing and finishing work of the surround. Consider the following when planning the opening(s):

  • Fireplaces 42 and 46 need a minimum of 70 SQ of open-air flow.
  • Fireplace 39 must have a minimum of 50 SQ of open-air flow.
  • Lower vent openings can be installed on the sides, back, or front for better air distribution.

  • Ventilation openings must be inside to protect electronics from external elements.

AIR INTAKE OVERVIEW

  • Any Flare Fireplace that has been equipped with the Cool Glass safety barrier (Double/Triple Glass), or a Blower Kit system is required to build an Air Intake into the framing and finishing work of your fireplace surround.
  • When planning for this opening(s) you are only limited by your creativity, the space, and the fireplace specifications outlined in the installation manual.

You’ll want to consider the following three ideas when planning these opening(s):

  1. Sizing based on fireplace size and any open-air-flow restrictions.
  2. Positioning.
  3. Balancing sizing and positioning.

SIZING

  • The Air Intake opening(s) must be built for maximum airflow to take convection and help circulate air throughout the fireplace surround. Any restrictive vents or grates must be taken into consideration when planning your opening(s) size.
  • The following size outline represents the absolute minimum requirements for implementing a properly sized Air Intake.
  • Please note that the larger these opening(s) are, the more air will enter the surround, making your Cool Glass barrier even cooler to the touch.
  • Fireplaces 42” and 46” must have a minimum of 70 SQ” of open-air flow.
  • Fireplaces 39” must have a minimum of 50 SQ” of open-air flow.
  • A lower vent opening may be installed at the sides of the enclosure (one on every side), back or front. It is recommended to place one opening on either side of longer units, to allow for better distribution of air taken in from the bottom.

POSITIONING

  • The position of your Air Intake is remarkably important to the successful long-term operation of your fireplace.
  • The following key points must be considered when planning for where you will place your Air Intake opening(s).
  • Is my Air Intake opening(s) evenly distributing fresh air underside of the fireplace running the linear length of my fireplace?
  • Is my Air Intake positioned on both sides of my cavity if I plan to use an option that places my opening(s) on the side of my cavity?
  • If my fireplace is on a platform, is my platform penetrated with enough open space for fresh air to cool the glass?
  • Is my Air Intake opening(s) interior facing?
  • All Air Intake ventilation openings must be on the inside of your project to prevent the fireplace, and all its electronic components, from being exposed to the outside elements.
  • Things like humidity, dust, and debris can all wreak havoc on the electronic components operating the fireplace and all its safety systems. This type of exposure is not covered under the Manufacturer’s Warranty.

BALANCING SIZING AND POSITIONING
