Definition of special terms
- Energiser – An appliance that is intended to periodically deliver voltage impulses to a fence connected to it.
- Fence – A barrier for animals or for the purpose of security, comprising one or more conductors such as metal wires, rods or rails.
- Electric fence – A barrier which includes one or more electric conductors, insulated from earth, to which electric pulses are applied by an energiser.
- Fence circuit – All conductive parts or components within an energiser that are connected or are intended to be connected, galvanically, to the output terminals.
- Earth electrode – Metal structure that is driven into the ground near an energiser and connected electrically to the fence earth terminal of the energiser, and that is independent of other earthing arrangements.
- Connecting lead – An electric conductor, used to connect the energiser to the electric fence or the earth electrode.
- Electric animal fence – An electric fence used to contain animals within or exclude animals from a particular area.
Requirements for electric animal fences
In accordance with Annex BB, Section BB.1 of IEC 60335-2-76
-
Electric animal fences and their ancillary equipment shall be installed, operated and maintained in a manner that minimises danger to persons, animals or their surroundings.
-
Electric animal fence constructions that are likely to lead to the entanglement of animals or persons shall be avoided.
-
Avoid contacting electric fence wires especially with the head, neck or torso. Do not climb over, through or under a multi-wire electric fence. Use a gate or a specially designed crossing point.
-
An electric animal fence shall not be supplied from two separate energisers or from independent fence circuits of the same energiser.
For any two separate electric animal fences, each supplied from a separate energiser independently timed, the distance between the wires of the two electric animal fences shall be at least 2.5 m. If this gap is to be closed, this shall be effected by means of electrically non-conductive material or an isolated metal barrier. -
Barbed wire or razor wire shall not be electrified by an energiser.
-
A non-electrified fence incorporating barbed wire or razor wire may be used to support one or more off-set electrified wires of an electric animal fence. The supporting devices for the electrified wires shall be constructed so as to ensure that these wires are positioned at a minimum distance of 150 mm from the vertical plane of the nonelectrified wires. The barbed wire and razor wire shall be earthed at regular intervals.
-
Follow our recommendations regarding earthing.
-
A distance of at least 10 m shall be maintained between the energiser earth electrode and any other earthing system-connected parts such as the power supply system protective earth or the telecommunication system earth.
-
Connecting leads that are run inside buildings shall be effectively insulated from the earthed structural parts of the building. This may be achieved by using insulated high-voltage cable.
-
Connecting leads that are run underground shall be run in conduit of insulating material or else insulated high voltage cable shall be used. Care must be taken to avoid damage to the connecting leads due to the effects of animal hooves or vehicle wheels sinking into the ground.
-
Connecting leads shall not be installed in the same conduit as the mains supply wiring, communication cables or data cables.
-
Connecting leads and electric animal fence wires shall not cross above overhead power or communication lines.
-
Crossings with overhead power lines shall be avoided wherever possible. If such a crossing cannot be avoided it shall be made underneath the power line and as nearly as possible at right angles to it.
-
If connecting leads and electric animal fence wires are installed near an overhead power line, the clearances shall not be less than those shown in the table below.
-
Minimum clearances from power lines for electric animal fences:
-
If connecting leads and electric animal fence wires are installed near an overhead power line, their height above the ground shall not exceed 3 m (10‘). This height applies to either side of the orthogonal projection of the outermost conductors of the power line on the ground surface, for a distance of:
- 2 m for power lines operating at a nominal voltage not exceeding 1000 V.
- 15 m for power lines operating at a nominal voltage exceeding 1000 V.
-
Electric animal fences intended for deterring birds, household pet containment or training animals such as cows need only be supplied from low output energisers to obtain satisfactory and safe performance.
-
In electric animal fences intended for deterring birds from roosting on buildings, no electric fence wire shall be connected to the energiser earth electrode. A warning sign shall be fitted to every point where persons may gain ready access to the conductors.
-
Where an electric animal fence crosses a public pathway, a non-electrified gate shall be incorporated in the electric animal fence at that point or a crossing by means of stiles shall be provided. At any such crossing, the adjacent electrified wires shall carry warning signs.
-
Any part of an electric animal fence that is installed along a public road or pathway shall be identified at frequent intervals by warning signs securely fastened to the fence posts or firmly clamped to the fence wires.
-
The size of the warning sign shall be at least 100 x 200 mm.
-
The background colour of both sides of the warning sign shall be yellow. The inscription on the sign shall be black and shall be either:
or the substance of „CAUTION: Electric fence“.
- The inscription shall be indelible, inscribed on both sides of the warning sign and have a height of at least 25 mm.
- Ensure that all mains-operated, ancillary equipment connected to the electric animal fence circuit provides a degree of isolation between the fence circuit and the supply mains equivalent to that provided by the energiser.
- Protection from the weather shall be provided for the ancillary equipment unless this equipment is certified by the manufacturer as being suitable for use outdoors, and is of a type with a minimum degree of protection IPX4.
Connecting the battery
Switch the energiser off before installing or connecting a battery.
Positioning the energiser
- next to the electric fence
- where it will receive the most daily sun throughout the season (out of the shade)
- where a good earth can be established
- with the solar panel facing true south in the northern hemisphere and true north in the southern hemisphere
Mounting the energiser
T-Post or Earth Stake
- Turn the energiser where it will receive the most daily sun.
- Lower the energiser onto the Earth Stake or T- Post as far as it will go.
Wooden posts
- Position the energiser where it will receive the most daily sun.
- Tap the nails and washers in the position that you will install the energiser. Slide the energiser onto the nails.
Connecting to an electric fence
- Push three 2 m earth rods fully into firm soil. Form an earth system by connecting the earth rods together using insulated underground fence cable and earth clamps.
- Connect the green earth lead to the earth terminal of the energiser and then to the earthing system. Ensure there is good contact.
- Connect the red fence lead to the fence terminal of the energiser and then to the fence.
Ensure there is a good connection.
Both leads can be found inside the energiser battery cradle.
Switching the energiser on
Set the pulse speed and energy output using the Selector switch.
Selector switch settings
The energiser pulse speed and energy output varies, depending on the selector
switch setting and the time of day.
Battery save
If days of bad weather occur or insufficient sunlight is received, the
energiser will revert to operating at low speed (3 seconds between pulses) and
half energy output in order to conserve the remaining battery. This occurs
regardless of the switch position or the time of day. If days of insufficient
sunlight persist, the energiser will eventually stop delivering pulses.
However, once sufficient sunlight is received, the battery will recharge and
the energiser will resume normal operation.
Reading voltage
The indicator lights show the voltage at the output terminals of the energiser.
When first connected to the battery (and the Selector switch is set off), all the indicator lights illuminate for a period of two seconds. Thereafter, if any other switch positions are selected, the indicator lights display the output voltage at each pulse. This indicates that the energiser is operating normally.
The indicator lights do not display the output voltage for the first 30 seconds if the energiser is set to Battery indicator.
Each indicator light segment represents an increment of approximately 1 kV
(1000 V) of output voltage. For example, if the first four indicator light
segments are illuminated at each pulse, the output voltage is approximately 4
kV (4000 V).
If five indicator light segments are illuminated, the output voltage may be
more than 5 kV (5000 V).
If you see only red lights at each pulse and no green lights, your fence line
is very heavily loaded, and you will need to look for faults on the fence
line.
Battery information
Battery setting
wWhen the energiser is connected to a battery and the Selector switch is set
to Battery indicator , the indicator lights show the charge level of the
battery for a period of 30 seconds.
While the battery charge level is being displayed, the indicator lights will
also flicker briefly with each energiser pulse in order to show that the
energiser is still functioning.
After 30 seconds, the indicator lights revert to displaying the energiser
output voltage.
When set to Battery indicator, the energiser pulses at Slow speed (3 s) and
delivers half energy at all times.
Battery charging
The solar panel can fully charge a flat battery in 3 days, provided that the
energiser is switched off and that there is adequate sunlight.
Replacing the battery
If a replacement battery is required, use a battery with these specifications:
- P 240 – a rechargeable Glass Mat Battery (12 V, 18 Ah).
- P 340 – a rechargeable Glass Mat Battery (12 V, 32 Ah).
- Do not use a non-rechargeable battery.
Battery safety
In the event of a spill or leakage from a sealed lead-acid battery:
- Contain small spills with dry sand, soil and vermiculite. Do not use combustible materials. If possible, carefully neutralise spilled electrolyte with soda ash, sodium bicarbonate, lime, etc.
- Wear acid-resistant clothing, boots, gloves and a face shield.
- Do not let un-neutralised acid get into the sewerage system.
- Avoid temperatures greater than 50 °C.
- Ensure that the battery is not exposed to a naked flame or sparks.
Disposing of an expired battery
Ensure that the expired battery is disposed of in a safe manner. Do not
dispose of the battery in a land-fill or in a fire. Expired batteries should
always be taken to a recycling depot.
Storage
The energiser should be stored inside, next to a window, where sunlight can
shine on the energiser each day.
If the energiser cannot be stored in a sunny position, it should be kept in a
cool place. The battery should be fully charged and disconnected from the
energiser. The battery should be recharged manually every six months using a
suitable battery charger.
If the energiser is stored for extended periods, the battery can discharge and
become damaged.
Maintenance
Check your solar panel once a month to ensure no bird excreta is caked on and
covering the panel (a plastic scraping device should be used to clear any
build-up).
Clean the solar panel regularly with a soft cloth using glass cleaner or a
mild solution of detergent and water.
This will ensure that the solar panel functions efficiently.
Do not immerse the energiser in water.
When transporting the energiser, protect the solar panel to prevent the glass surface from being damaged.
Servicing
This energiser contains no user serviceable parts. It must be returned to a service agent appointed by PATURA for repair.
If you suspect that the energiser is not working, always check the battery connection and voltage before proceeding.

Frequently Asked Questions / Troubleshooting
What voltage is required to control animals?
4 kV is widely accepted as an adequate voltage to control animals. However, you also require a well constructed fence system to ensure that animals cannot push through electrified wires.
The fence voltage is below 4 kV. How do I increase the voltage?
Check the energiser. Ensure that the energiser is on, and is operating at full energy. Disconnect the fence wire from the energiser‘s fence output terminal. Measure the voltage across the energiser terminals using a Fault Finder or a Digital Voltmeter. If the voltage is less than 6 kV, the energiser may require servicing Check the fence system for faults. The most common source of low voltage is faults on the fence line or an underperforming earth system. If the fence, earth and energiser are in good condition and the voltage is still below 4 kV, talk to your nearest reseller. Recent extensions to your fence, a poor fence layout, or soil conditions may be causing inadequate voltage
How do I locate faults?
The recommended tool for locating faults is a Fault Finder. This has a combined voltage and current meter which allows you to rapidly locate sources of current leakage. Alternatively, use a Digital Voltmeter. Use cut-out switches to turn off the power to different sections of the farm. If the voltage on the fence increases when a section of the farm is turned off, then investigate that section for possible faults.
There are no lights flashing on the energiser
Ensure the battery is correctly connected and the Selector switch is not set to Off. Check the battery – it may need recharging or replacing. Check the fence system for faults (see above). If the energiser still does not operate, it may require servicing.
