SAFETY ALERTS
The symbols below are used throughout this manual to draw the user’s attention to valuable information related to device safety and use.
Safety recommendations must be followed to ensure personal safety and prevent damage to the equipment or system. If the equipment is used in a manner other than that specified in this manual, the safety precautions may not be effective.
PRESENTATION
Telik Trafo is the ideal device to actively monitor distribution transformers. You can use it to measure the transformer’s low voltage output directly. Furthermore, Telik Trafo has wireless communication, which allows you to send the collected data to monitoring and data analysis systems. Through this monitoring, it is possible to obtain information on the electrical quantities related to the operation of the transformer, such as voltage, current, power, power factor, and other variables. Since Telik Trafo provides more active monitoring of the network, this data allows operators of the electric power distribution systems to make more agile decisions and makes it possible to carry out other analyses involving quality indicators, loss location, and energy balance. Its native wireless communication allows it to be quickly deployed in the field. It does not require other communication infrastructure, such as large antennas. Also, the device is very compact. This makes it easier to install and it is visually neutral near the transformer, which avoids attracting the attention of vandals and others.
IDENTIFICATION
OVERVIEW
Telik Trafo is a device made of flame-retardant and UV-resistant material in gray. It has inputs for measuring phase voltage and current:
- Voltage measurement input: It has 4 wires, corresponding to the 3 phases and neutral.
- Current measurement input: It has 3 Rogowski coil sensors, 1 sensor for each phase.
Current is measured indirectly using Rogowski coils. Voltage is measured directly. Thus, the device’s voltage input wires must be connected to the low voltage conductors of the distribution network, by the utility’s connection standard. The device is powered via the voltage measurement input. The device also has 2 LEDs on the bottom of the housing (see LEDS section). They indicate the correct functioning of the Telik Trafo. There are also internal circuits that use an anti-tamper system to identify attempts to tamper with the device. The figure below shows an overview of the device:
IDENTIFICATION
The model identification is described on the label attached to the right side
of the housing. This label also contains information about the power supply
and the serial number, as shown in the figure below:

INSTALLATION
ELECTRICAL INSTALLATION
The device has 2 sets of wires for measuring voltage and current. The
individual wires are used to read the voltage (see VOLTAGE AND CURRENT
CONNECTIONS section). The blue wire must be connected directly to the system’s
neutral. The black, yellow, and red wires must be connected directly to each
of the transformer’s available phases. Rogowski coils (see ROGOWSKI COIL
CONNECTIONS section) must be connected indirectly to their respective phases,
identified by the colors black, yellow, and red. The conductor must be passed
through the coil, as shown in Figure 5.
VOLTAGE AND CURRENT CONNECTIONS
The figure below shows how to make the voltage and current connections on the
phases and neutral of the transformer’s output:
ROGOWSKI COIL CONNECTIONS
When installing Rogowski coils, you must observe the arrow indicating the
direction of the current. It must correspond to the current output of the
transformer, as shown in the figure below:
The coils are identified by color:
For the Rogowski coil to provide the most accurate current measurement, it is important to center the conductor in the coil. The figure below shows the typical accuracy for each position in which the conductor is located:
GENERAL RECOMMENDATIONS
To calculate energy, power, and power factor, you must reconcile the phase of
the voltage with the phase of the current, according to the colors of the
phases. To ensure proper functioning of the system, the neutral must be
correctly connected to the transformer’s neutral. The device is powered
between neutral and any of the phases it is connected to.
- You must never connect the neutral wire to one of the transformer’s phases, as this could burn out the device.
MECHANICAL INSTALLATION
Telik Trafo is designed to be installed on poles, next to transformers. The
device has flaps at the top and bottom. They allow metal straps to be used to
secure the device through the holes shown in the figure below:
DIMENSIONS
Telik Trafo has the following dimensions:
SIM CARD
Telik Trafo supports a SIM card, which is used to connect the device to an LTE
network. The SIM card slot is on the inside of the device. To access it,
remove the 4 screws from the bottom and then remove the protective cover, as
shown in the figure below:
- Before installing the SIM card, you must ensure that the device is disconnected from the mains. Otherwise, the internal parts pose a risk of electric shock. Once the SIM card has been installed, it must be configured according to the instructions in the NETWORK CONFIGURATION section, available in the CONFIGURATION SOFTWARE chapter.
COMMUNICATION INTERFACES
WI-FI INTERFACE
Telik Trafo has a Wi-Fi interface that operates at 2.4 GHz. Each Telik Trafo
unit has its own network. The Wi-Fi connection must be used to configure and
locally collect the data recorded in the device’s internal memory. This
connection supports a maximum distance of 10 meters and is available for up to
30 minutes. It is configured via software (see CONFIGURATION SOFTWARE
chapter).
MOBILE INTERFACE
Telik Trafo has an interface with LTE CAT M1, NBIoT, and 2 G connection. The
standard connection is LTE CAT M1 or NBIoT. When there are no other
connections available, there will be a fallback to 2 G. This connection mode
is used to perform Telik Trafo’s main activity: Actively monitoring
distribution transformers.
CONFIGURATION SOFTWARE AND LOCAL DATA DOWNLOAD
To configure and collect the device’s data locally, use the Telik Trafo
software. Using the Wi-Fi connection of a smartphone or computer, it is
possible to analyze the variables measured and calculated in real time, as
well as configure the device and collect the data stored in the internal
memory.
CONNECTING
To make the connection, you need to be close to the device (at least 10 meters
in the open). Then follow the steps below:
- Scan the available Wi-Fi networks and connect to the network with the name (SSID) “TELIK-TRAFO-**” (the asterisks refer to the identifying digits of each device (ID)). The password for connecting to the network is the device ID. That is, the numbers displayed after the last hyphen in the network SSID.
- From the Wi-Fi network connection, open an Internet browser and type in the following address: “192.168.4.1”. This address will display a web page. In it, you can perform all the actions already mentioned (see CONFIGURING THE DEVICE section).
This connection will be active for a maximum of 30 minutes. After this time has elapsed, the Wi-Fi AP mode will be switched off. To restart AP mode, de- energize the Telik Trafo and wait until the Status LED remains off. Due to the performance of the power backup system, this may take a few minutes.
CLOUD SOFTWARE
Telik Trafo has a cloud connection system via MQTT (Message Queuing Telemetry
Transport) protocol in version V3.1.1 (see MQTT PROTOCOL chapter). Through a
communication interface, preferably cellular, this protocol allows interaction

MQTT PROTOCOL
Telik Trafo is compatible with the Message Queue Telemetry Transport (MQTT) protocol. This protocol is based on the Publish/Subscribe model for exchanging messages. As an MQTT Publisher/Subscriber, Telik Trafo requires a connection to an MQTT Broker. The Broker is responsible for sending the Publishers’ messages to the Subscribers. In addition, Telik Trafo can act as a Publisher (providing information, electrical measurements, and device status via 6 publication topics) and as a Subscriber (receiving parameter changes via 1 subscription topic and offering a level of remote control and parameterization).
BROKER MQTT CONFIGURATION
Telik Trafo can connect to a MQTT Broker with or without the use of TLS
(Transport Layer Security), which is an additional security layer. This layer
is useful for protecting the information exchanged between the device and the
Broker.
By using TLS, Telik Trafo guarantees the security of the data being collected
and sent. However, if security is not a critical factor, it is possible to
connect without TLS, which allows for a faster and more efficient connection.
CONFIGURING THE BROKER USING TLS
To connect to the Broker using TLS, you need to check the Use TLS option in
the MQTT section, as shown in the figure below:
CONFIGURING TLS CERTIFICATES
TLS (Transport Layer Security) certificates are a set of security protocols
that provide privacy and data integrity during a device’s communication with
the Internet. They are essential for guaranteeing the security of data
transmitted between devices and servers.
To establish a secure connection with the MQTT Broker, Telik Trafo uses 3
certificates:
- Client certificate (client.crt): This certificate represents Telik Trafo in the connection with the Broker and is used to identify it as a trusted device. It is generated by a Certificate Authority (CA) and contains information about the device, such as its name and IP address.
- Client Private Key (client.key): The client’s private key is secret and encrypted information, generated at the same time as the client certificate. It is used to encrypt and decrypt information during the TLS connection.
- CA Certificate (server.pem or server.crt): The Certificate Authority (CA) Certificate is used to verify the validity of the Client Certificate. It is a guarantee that the Client Certificate has been issued by a reliable and authorized source.
These certificates guarantee the security of the connection between Telik Trafo and MQTT Broker. You can see them in the Files section of the configuration software:
- Only certificates with the names “client.crt”, “client.key”, and “server.pem”/”server.crt” are accepted.
