Introduction
What this document describes
This document describes how to make currently available commercial Bluetooth LAP clients to connect with CLIPCOMM’s LAN access points (BlueStation V100 and BlueStation-A100). This sort of information can also be found in the user manuals of each client software, but we hope that users of the BlueStation and the client software can more easily benefit by the Bluetooth enabled network service with this document.
The clients tested with BlueStation can be found in the below table, but only DigiAnswer/Win2000 client is described here.

Bluetooth at one glance
Connection Procedure
Why is the connection procedure to an LAP so complicated?
As the Bluetooth industry becomes mature, many companies provide their
Bluetooth devices. But still the Bluetooth interface is not integrated with
the operating system, so each Bluetooth device from different company has its
unique (company dependent) user interface.
This makes Bluetooth users suffer from following two problems:
A. Each company provides its own Bluetooth interface.
B. To use a Bluetooth device as an LAP client, one should make two
connections – Bluetooth RFCOMM connection and legacy Windows PPP connection.
Both problems may not be solved until the Bluetooth interface is integrated with operating systems. About problem 2, some Bluetooth stack vendor provides their own PPP interface so that users can connect to the LAP with just one click. But using other client software, users must perform Bluetooth SDP and RFCOMM connection with the client software, and then make PPP connection after installing a modem on the virtual COM port by the RFCOMM. This latter procedure is more or less different for each client program, which makes users very complicated.
Configuring Bluetooth LAP Clients
In this section, configuration and connection procedure for each client program is described in detail. All clients were tested on a laptop PC with Windows 2000 and Windows ME. Interoperability test was performed with CLIPCOMM’s LAN Access Points (BS-V100 and BS-A100).
Motorola PC card with DigiAnswer BTSWS v1.09 (Windows 2000)
Before starting configuration/connection procedure
A. Update Bluetooth Software Suite (BTSWS) to version v1.09 or later.
To update BTSWS to v1.09, a prior version of BTSWS should be installed in
advance. You can download all versions of BTSWS at the DigiAnswer BTSWS
website –
http://www.btsws.com/updates
(At the time of writing, v1.09 is the latest version of BTSWS. It is the first
version of BTSWS that is compliant with Bluetooth Spec v1.1.)
B. Check a modem driver with the name “ Communications cable between two computers” is installed. You can see the list of installed modems on your WIN2000 in Control Panel / Phone and Modem Options / Modems tab. If you cannot find the modem in the list, install it. See the “Appendix” chapter at the end of this document about how to install the modem driver.
Creating a dial-up connection
This chapter describes how to make a dial-up connection icon with the legacy PPP program in WIN2000.
Step 1. Make New Connection
Select Settings / Network and Dial-up Connections / Make New Connection menu
on Start button.
Step 2. Select “Connect directly to another computer” item and Next button
Step 3. Select “Guest” item and Next button.
Step 4. Select “ Communications cable between two computers (COM7) ”
item and Next button.
Note) In normal condition, the BTSWS v1.09 installs 3 COM port –
COM7/COM8/COM9. But when other modem drivers are already installed on
COM7 before BTSWS is installed, the BTSWS installs its COM ports
differently. In that case, map the driver “Communications cable between two
computers” to the first BTSWS COM port.
Step 5. Select “For all users” and Next button
Step 6. Type a proper name that is easy to remember and select Finish button.
Step 7. Check whether the dial-up connection is finally made.
Select the Settings / Control Panel menu on the Start button and
select the
“Network and Dial-up Connections” icon. You must be able to see a new
icon with the name typed in at the step 6.
Step 8. End of making a dial-up connection.
Once you have made this dial-up connection, you need not make this connection
again for each Bluetooth connection. Whenever you make the Bluetooth
connection with DigiAnswer PC card and BTSWS, use this dial-up connection.
Bluetooth connection
Step 1. Start Bluetooth Neighborhood on Desktop.
By selecting Bluetooth menu-> Device Discovery, discovered Bluetooth
devices will be shown as the following window.
Step 2. Double-click the LAN access point to connect.
The SDP record of the device will be shown in the next window. If the device
is a LAN access point, the “LAN Access using PPP” icon will be shown like
below.
Step 3. Double-click the SDP record “LAN Access using PPP”.
A confirmation is required to make connection with other device
Step 4. By selecting “Yes”, the client tries to connect to the LAN
access point.
To make connection with the BS-V100, pairing is required for security. The
PIN code (passkey) of your BS-V100 is set to “12345” by default. (You can
change the PIN code. Refer to the BS-V100 user’s manual about changing the PIN
code. )
Step 5. Type “12345”(or appropriate PIN code if you changed that of BS V100) in passkey window. Then you can confirm the device is connected by the yellow connected figure
PPP connection
When connecting to the LAN access point in Bluetooth Neighborhood succeeds, only a Bluetooth RFCOMM connection is established between two devices, that is, one wireless serial (or COM) link is established between the LAN access point and Bluetooth client using DigiAnswer’s BTSWS. To setup networking over this link, a PPP connection should be established over this RFCOMM link. This can be performed with the legacy PPP program contained in the operating system – quite a simple procedure if the dial-up connection icon exists already. This chapter describes how to use the legacy PPP program in WIN2000.
Step 1.
Before start, check the dial-up connection icon exists. If it does not exist,
make one according to the method described in section 3.1.2 Creating a dial-
up connection.
Select the Settings / Control Panel menu on the Start button and
select the “Network and Dial-up Connections” icon.
Step 2. Double-click the “DigiAnswer Bluetooth” icon. The name of the icon is the one you have specified when you made this dial-up connection icon.
A PPP authentication is disabled by default. So any username/password including blank will be accepted by BS-V100/A100.
Step 3. You are connected!
After connection, check the active PPP connection icon in the tray box as in
below figure.
Still not working?
If a dial-up connection icon is shown in the tray box(see section 3.1.4 step
3), you are connected to the access point. If you still cannot access LAN,
check below the proxy server setting of your computer.
– Proxy Server
If ‘ping’ or ‘telnet’ works but ‘http’ does not work, check your proxy server
setting in the browser.
Execute Explorer -> Tools menu -> Internet Options
Internet Options window appears now. Select Connections tab
Select the dial-up connection icon you have made in section 3.1.2 Creating
a
dial-up connection.
Click Settings button in the red ring.
( Do not click LAN Settings! you are modifying PPP Settings now)
Note that the PPP proxy setting is different from the LAN proxy setting.
Check ‘ Use a proxy server’
Provide the proper proxy server address and port.
