OPERATION

Using the Thermometer

Pull the trigger of the Infrared Thermometer to measure the surface temperature of an area.

Field of Measurement

The Infrared Thermometer measures average surface temperature on the basis of distance to spot diameter (D:S) ratio. This ratio is the size of the area being measured by the thermometer as it relates to distance. The targeted area being measured becomes larger as the distance from the thermometer increases. The smaller the target, the closer the thermometer should be to it.
The D:S ratio for the Infrared Thermometer is 12:1, illustrated below.
Examples: If you’re standing 12-feet (3.6 m) away from the target surface, the area being measured will be 1-foot (0.3 m) in diameter. If your target surface is 1-inch (25 mm) in diameter, the thermometer must be within 12-inches (300 mm) of the target.

Emissivity

Emissivity is the measurement of an object’s ability to radiate heat. Emissivity values range from 0 (shiny mirror) to 1.0 (blackbody). Most organic materials and painted or oxidized surfaces have an emissivity close to 0.95. This thermometer is preset (non-adjustable) to an emissivity value of 0.95. Refer to the chart for a list of emissivity values for common surfaces.

Substance| Thermal emissivity| Substance| Thermal emissivity
---|---|---|---
Asphalt| 0.90 to 0.98| Cloth (black)| 0.98
Concrete| 0.94| Human skin| 0.98
Cement| 0.96| Lather| 0.75 to 0.80
Sand| 0.90| Charcoal (powder)| 0.96
Earth| 0.92 to 0.96| Lacquer| 0.80 to .095
Water| 0.92 to 0.96| Lacquer (matt)| 0.97
Ice| 0.96 to 0.98| Rubber (black)| 0.94
Snow| 0.83| Plastic| 0.85 to 0.95
Glass| 0.90 to 0.95| Timber| 0.90
Ceramic| 0.90 to 0.94| Paper| 0.70 to 0.94
Marble| 0.94| Chromium oxides| 0.81
Plaster| 0.80 to 0.90| Copper oxides| 0.78
Mortar| 0.89 to 0.91| Iron oxides| 0.78 to 0.82
Brick| 0.93 to 0.96| Textiles| 0.90

High & Low Records

While measuring the temperature of a surface, minimum and maximum values are recorded. Press and release the “MODE” button after releasing the trigger to cycle through the high and low records. Records are reset each time the thermometer powers off, 5 seconds after no buttons are pressed.

Troubleshooting

Problem Possible Solution
Display screen not working
  • Check that the battery is installed correctly. Battery may need to be replaced.

Inaccurate temperature|

  • Verify size of target is within the field of measurement according to the D:S ratio (see page 3).
  • Estimate emissivity value of target surface (see chart above). If you need to measure the temperature of a shiny surface, cover the area with a piece of masking tape. Then, measure the temperature of the taped surface.
