Follow all manufacturer safety precautions for the indicator, the battery
charger and the battery.
Only use Rice Lake Weighing Systems approved charger for 882IS indicator
batteries.
Batteries produce explosive gases and can explode.
Because hydrogen gas may be present, disconnect battery charger unit from
AC power before connecting or disconnecting output connectors from the
battery.

|
Battery pack must be removed from the 882IS unit and taken to a non-
hazardous location before testing. Do not expose the tester to rain or
moisture.
Do not disassemble.
Disconnect the tester from both the charger and the battery before
maintenance or cleaning.
|
Connections to the battery must be made in the non-hazardous area before
connecting the cable to the 882IS indicator.
Battery must be fully charged for a healthy battery confirmation. If
modifications are made to the battery or it is changed in any way including
field repair or modification, the FM approval is void and all warranties,
expressed or implied, are void. The customer becomes fully responsible and
liable for all such modifications.
Introduction
The 882IS Battery Tester is an instrument designed to test the six-volt,
sealed, lead-acid batteries in the 882IS. While the instrument is connected to
the battery, it continuously measures the battery terminal voltage. When the
Apply Load button is pressed, the instrument measures voltage of the battery
while it is under a full load. While the tester is connected to both the
battery and the IS6V2 battery charger, and the Apply Charge button is pressed,
the instrument measures voltage going into the battery from the battery
charger.
Battery Test Connection Procedure.
- Disconnect the 882IS battery cable from the 882IS indicator.
- Remove the battery pack from the battery mount and take to a non-hazardous area.
- Remove the lockout device and battery cable from the battery.
- Plug the connector from the battery charger into the connector on the battery tester and the the connector from the battery tester into the connector on the battery.
- Connect the charger power cord to a properly grounded outlet supplying the correct input voltage.
The 882IS battery tester is powered by the battery being tested. If the tester does not illuminate, the battery voltage is Note too low to power the tester or the protection circuit in the battery pack is damaged.
Apply Load
When the Apply Load button is pressed, the instrument measures voltage of
the battery while it is under a full load.
Press Apply Load on the battery tester for a few seconds to test the
health of the battery.
Table 1. Apply Load Result Parameters
Healthy Battery Results | Weak Battery Results |
---|
Displayed voltage:
- Immediately decreases slightly
- Displays a voltage of a value greater than or equal to 5.7 VDC
| Displayed voltage:
- Fully charged battery displays a voltage of a value less than 5.7 VDC
Apply Charge
When the charger and tester are connected to power and the Apply Charge
button is pressed, the instrument measures voltage going into the battery from
the battery charger.
Press Apply Charge on the battery tester for a few seconds to test the
health of the battery barrier and connection to the charger.
Table 2. Apply Charge Result Parameters
Healthy Battery Barrier and Charger Results| Unhealthy Battery Barrier
and Charger Test Results

Displayed voltage:
- Slowly increases as button is held down
| If the voltage does not increase, it could mean:
- Battery charger is not connected, not powered up, or is defective If the voltage is not displayed, it could mean:
- The battery pack is not connected
- The battery pack protection circuit is defective
- There is physical damage to the battery, connector or cable
To disconnect the battery tester from the battery, follow the connection steps in reverse order. If battery is tested to be weak or unhealthy, do not attempt to repair the battery. Call Rice Lake Weighing Systems technical support at800-472-6703.
