Owner’s Manual
55Χ12

Congratulations on your purchase of the Bushranger® Black Max Compressor.
To take full advantage of this product, please read this manual carefully before using. Retain this manual for future reference for installation and warranty.

General Operating Instructions (please read)
Please read and follow the operating instructions carefully to understand and get the most from your Black Max Compressor.

Important:

  1. Always operate the compressor within its maximum pressure rating. Refer to the specifications section of this manual for details. Operations exceeding maximum pressure rating will result in damage to air compressor and void warranty.
  2. Your air compressor is equipped with an automatic thermal overload protector. This feature is designed to protect the air compressor from overheating and causing permanent damage to your air compressor. The thermal overload protector will automatically cut off power to air compressor should the internal operating temperature rise above safe levels during excessive use.
  3. Should at any time during usage your air compressor automatically shut down, do not attempt to restart air compressor. Turn off the power switch. The automatic thermal overload protector will automatically reset when the internal temperature of the air compressor drops to safe levels. After allowing air compressor to cool off for about 15 minutes, you can safely resume usage of the air compressor by turning on the power switch – your warranty will be void if this instruction is not followed.
  4. It is strongly recommended that you keep the vehicle’s engine running while using the air compressor to prevent the discharge of your vehicle’s battery. This means you should ONLY OPERATE THE AIR COMPRESSOR IN WELL VENTILATED AREAS. Compressor performance is also enhanced when operating with the vehicle’s engine running.
  5. Please note that you may experience a slight delay (about 3 sec) to the compressor’s motor starting when the compressor is pressurized, (i.e. when there is backpressure in the airline) This is a normal delayed reaction, not a compressor on/off switch malfunction

Maintenance

  • The air filter housing has a screw-on lid to gain access to the replaceable air filter element inside. The compressor’s performance will be greatly reduced by a clogged filter element. Old elements should be replaced before performance is affected.
  • Your air compressor is equipped with a permanently lubricated, maintenance-free motor. Never try to lubricate the compressor.
  • Regularly clean dust and dirt from compressor cooling fins and motor housing.

Tyre Inflation Operating Instructions

Before attaching the air compressor’s power cord to the 12 Volt D.C. power source, check to make sure that the power switch is in the ‘Off’ position. For first time use ensure air filter is fitted correctly (see page 7). Attach the Red battery clamp to the Positive terminal of the battery and the Black battery clamp to the Negative terminal of the battery, ensuring you have made a good connection. Always keep your vehicle’s engine running while operating the compressor to avoid draining your vehicle’s battery.
Always make sure the portable compressor’s 2.4-meter power cord is uncoiled and fully extended to avoid overheating of the power cord.
The air compressor comes with a heavy-duty, heat-resistant coiled air hose with a quick connect air outlet fitting. Simply snap on this coil hose and you are ready to inflate tyres. Also included is an in-line deflator/inflator device.

Tyre Inflation

  1. Attach quick connect the coupler to air compressor.
  2. Fit brass connector onto the tyre valve stem.
  3. Check to make sure the deflator collar lock is disengaged.
  4. Turn compressor switch ‘On’ to begin inflation. When the desired pressure is reached turn the compressor ‘Off’.

Hands-Free Continuous Deflation

  1. Fit connector onto the tyre valve stem.
  2. Push deflator collar towards tyre valve stem and turn deflator collar clockwise to engage the lock.
  3. When the desired pressure is reached, turn the deflator collar anti-clockwise to disengage the lock.

Intermittent Deflation

  1. The intermittent deflation function offers fast downward pressure adjustments.
  2. With connector attached to tyre valve stem push deflator collar towards tyre valve stem to release tyre pressure.
  3. Release deflator collar to stop deflation.

In-line Pressure Gauge

  1.  The 50mm in-line gauge provides convenient monitoring of tyre pressure when deflating or inflating. This eliminates switching back and forth between a hand-held pressure gauge and the compressor.
  2. Please note that during inflation and deflation, due to air velocity, the pressure gauge cannot provide accurate readings. Momentarily stop inflation to obtain accurate pressure readings.

Fitting Air Filter Unit

The air compressor comes originally packed without the air filter unit fitted Procedure:

  1. Remove the temporary protective red plug from the air inlet port. Screw-in the air filter unit & hand tighten. Do not use Teflon tape or lubricants on the thread.
  2. Unscrew the top lid to check if the element is correctly in place.

Important Safety Instructions

  • Do not disassemble. Do not attempt repairs or modifications. Your warranty will be void if this instruction is ignored.
  • Do not use this product in an area where it can fall or be pulled into water or other liquids.
  • The base tray is fitted to place a barrier between the compressor & sandy or dusty ground, plus provide a stable operating platform, therefore keep the tray clean at all times during use.
  • Use this compressor with 12Volt DC power only.
  • This product should never be left unattended during use.

Warning: To prevent injuries

  • Parts of this compressor will become very HOT during & immediately after use.
Do not touch any of these parts with your bare hands as you could receive a severe burn.

  • Never allow children to operate this compressor. Close supervision is necessary when this compressor is being used near children.

  • Do not pump anything other than atmospheric air.

  • Do not use any other tools or attachments without first determining the maximum air pressure for that tool or attachment.

  • This air compressor is equipped with an Automatic Reset Thermal Protector, & can automatically restart after the thermal protector resets. Always turn off the power when the thermal protector becomes activated.

  • Never Point any air nozzles toward another person or any part of the body.

  • After use, always release pressure from the hose by turning ON/OFF switch to OFF. Press trigger on the tyre gun – this releases pressure in system. Disconnect hose & gun.

  • Exercise extreme caution & never exceed 40 KPH when driving with deflated tyres.

  • Never make sharp turns while driving with reduced tyre pressure as you could break the ‘bead’ between the wheel rim & the tyre.

  • Re-inflate tyres to manufacturer’s recommended tyre pressure before high speed travelling on roadways.

Troubleshooting

Problem Cause Action
The compressor will not run 1.No power is reaching the compressor.

2. Blown fuse.
3. Motor overheated.| 1. Make sure the compressor switch is “On”.
2. Disconnect the compressor from the power source, and replace fuse (Refer to Specifications sections for correct fuse).
3.Let the compressor cool off for about 15 minutes so the thermal overload switch will reset.
Thermal Overload Protector cuts out repeatedly| 1. Lock of proper
ventilation/ ambient temperature is too high.
2. Compressor valves failed.| 1. Move the compressor to a well-ventilated area or area with lower ambient temperature.
2. Replace compressor.
Excessive knocking or rattling| 1. Worn bearing on eccentric or motor shaft.
2. Cylinder or piston ring is worn.| 1. Replace compressor.
2. Replace compressor.
Compressor air flow lower than normal, or can not pump to higher pressures| 1. Worn piston ring or inlet valves.| 1. Replace the compressor
