Assembly Instructions
Parts List:
If you are missing any of the below parts please contact cservice@oypla.com
Please be aware that you will be referring to this parts list throughout the
assembly process.
Handle Assembly
- Insert the handle uprights (2) into the upper handle (1). Ensure that the uprights curve outwards once inserted.
- Secure the uprights to the handle using the two shorter bolts (11) and nuts (12).
- Attach the lower handle to ends of the handle uprights using the four longer bolts (10) and nuts (12).
Fixing the Handle to the Mower Head
Locate the two metal lugs found in front of the cutting bar adjustment nuts
and insert the large hole in the handle arm onto the lug. Some force may be
required in pushing the handle together to insert the second arm onto the
opposite lug.
Attaching the Grass Collector
- Locate the fixing holes on the grass collector (9) and hang onto the hooks at the back of the mower head.
- Make sure the grass collector is securely fixed to the mower head.
- Attach the grass collector strap (13) to hold the grass collector on the lower handle.
Changing the Cutting Height
Unscrew the height adjustment knobs (7) on each side of the rear roller. This
enables the roller assembly to slide up or down to place the cutting bar at a
different height level. Make sure that the height is set to the same level on
both sides. Re tighten the height adjustment knobs until the roller assembly
is secured in position.
Adjusting the Cutting Bar to the Blades
The cutting bar should be as close to the blades as possible, they shouldmake
slight contact making a whispery sound (like scissors opening and closing)
when the blades are rotated manually. Ensure the bar does not stop the blades
from rotating. To raise or lower the bar loosens or tighten the adjustment
knobs (8) on the end of the cutting bar (located behind the reel blades, above
the roller.)
NOTE: a small 1/16 of a turn is a major adjustment. To loosen the blades,
or move them further away from the cutting bar, loosen the cutting bar nuts on
each side equally by turning them a nti clockwise. (See Fig. L) To tighten the
blades, or move them closer against the cutting bar, tighten both cutting bar
nutsequally by turning them clockwise. If the mower is only cutting on one
side, the cutting bar may be out of alignment with the bl ade reel. Tighten
the side of the mower that is not cutting to bring it back into alignment. If
the mower is hard to push and the blades barely turn, the cutting bar may be
overtightened against the blade reel. If the blade spins freely and doesn’t
make contact against the cutting bar, or the mower isn’t cutting the grass
well, the cutting bar may be too loose against the blade reel.
NOTE: by adjusting the blade knobs you can adjust the clearance between
the blade and the guard. Ensure that every place in the blade can shave the
guard and roll smoothly.
Mowing Instructions
- Walk at a good, steady pace. With a manual lawn mower, the rotation of the wheels turns the blade reel. The mower will tend to bind and skid if it is moving at too slow a pace. The faster the wheels are travelling, the faster the blade reel turns. Therefore, moving at a comfortable quick walking pace will achieve the best results.
- Overlapping rows. When mowing a lawn, slightly overlap the row that has already been mowed. This will make the force required to move the mower easier because less grass is being mowed at one time. Overlapping rows will also ensure a neat cut by removing grass that may have been missed on the previous row.
- Don’t let the grass get too tall. Manual lawn mowers are harder to push when the grass gets too tall. Therefore, it is recommended to mow on a weekly basis.
- The mower will not mow tall weeds. The manual lawn mower will tend to roll over tall weeds without cutting them. This includes tall weeds that are more than 6 inches and weeds like dandelions and docs.
- The metal guard will also protect your garden. The metal guard does not only protect your feet and hands, but also the garden. The mower can be pushed right up to flowers and shrubs without amaging them. This means that the mower can cut the edges of the lawn where garden plants exist minimizing any potential damage.
Sharpening the Blades
WARNING: Keep out of the reach of children. This product contains a functional sharp edge which may cause injury if misused. Please take care when handling. Always wear thick gloves when handling blades or working near blades. Make sure the blade is securely fixed to the mower before use.
- Prop up the mower so that the blade reel can be rotated by turning the wheels.
- Check the blades for nicks and burrs. If any damage is found, It can usually be removed by holding a file flat against the blade and pushing away from the edge.
- Examine the cutting bar- it should be as close to the blades as possible along their entire length.
- If the bar is out of alignment, adjust using the adjustment knobs on the ends of the bar.
- Using a soft paintbrush, cover the blades with a thin, even coat of automotive valve-grinding compound.
- Grasp a wheel and turn it slowly backward so the grinding compound is squeezed between the blades and the cutting bar, thereby sharpening both cutting edges as they pass each other. Be sure that each blade touches the bar as the wheel is rotated.
- Make about a dozen turns, applying more grinding compound when necessary.
- Examine the blade edges. If they look sharp, wash off all the grinding compound with soapy water and rinse thoroughly.
- Test for sharpness. Insert a sheet of newspaper between the blades and the cutting bar, and rotate the reel forward. When the blades cut the paper as easily and as cleanly as a sharp pair of scissors would, the task is complete.
NOTE: after each use clean the mower and keep it dry. Wipe all the metal
parts with a thin film of WD-40 or mineral oil.
WARNING: Sharpen blades only by hand. The heat generated by a power
grinder or an electric drill with a grinding wheel attached can destroy the
temper of the metal. Wear thick leather gloves when handling the blade reel
and cutter bar and make slow, precise movements to avoid cutting or jamming
your fingers.
Care and Maintenance
- Keep all nuts, bolts and screws tight to ensure the mower is in safe working order.
- If the mower cannot operate smoothly, this may be caused by excessive grass jammed. Move the blades forward and backward manually to remove the thick grass. (Always wear thick gloves when handling blades or working near blades.)
- Always keep the mower clean and remove debris from the grass collector and mower head after each use and before storage.
- Regular and proper cleaning will ensure safe use and prolong the product life.
- Inspect the mower before each use for worn or damaged parts. Do not operate if you find broken or worn parts.
- Only perform repairs and maintenance work according to these instructions. All further works must be performed by a qualified specialist.
- Clean the product with a dry cloth. Use a brush for areas that are hard to reach.
- Do not use chemical, alkaline, abrasive or other aggressive detergents or disinfectants to clean this product as they may damage its surface.
- Clean the grass collector after operation using water and mild soap. Let the grass collector dry thoroughly before storage to avoid mildew.
- Store the mower and accessories in a dry and frost-free place.
