Introduction
Congratulations on purchasing Project E Beauty’s SmoothPro+ (IPL Hair
Removal Device). SmoothPro+ uses Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) technology which
is known as one of the most effective methods to treat unwanted body hair with
longer-lasting results.
Smooth Pro+ produces gentle pulses of light that penetrate the skin and are
absorbed by the hair. This causes the hair follicle to go into a ‘resting
phase’ and prevents the hair from growing any further. A few days later, the
treated hair falls out naturally. By repeating the treatment according to the
recommended schedule, you can continue to prevent hair regrowth.
There are so many different methods of hair removal, from traditional shaving blades to professional laser treatments. Many are time-consuming, expensive, or horribly painful. SmoothPro+ is FDA cleared and gives you the longer- lasting results at a reasonable price. You can now use this innovative light- based hair regrowth prevention technology comfortably in the privacy of your own home, whenever and wherever you want. For important information about safety and how to use the device, please read through this user manual before you use SmoothPro+.
Working Principle
The appliance works by heating up the hair and root beneath the skin. The melanin in the hair and hair root absorbs the released light pulses. The darker the color of the hair, the more light can be absorbed. This process stimulates the hair to go into the resting phase. The hair now sheds naturally and the hair growth is inhibited.
Hairs can take one or two weeks to shed. Optimal hair removal cannot be obtained with a single session, since only hairs in the growing phase are susceptible to treatment with light. During a treatment, hairs on the treated area are usually in different stages of the hair growth cycle. To effectively treat all hairs you have to repeat the treatment every two weeks for a few times.
Benefits of Smooth Pro+
This device provides the following benefits:
Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) technology for home use:
SmoothPro+ uses a light-based technology called Intense Pulsed Light (IPL).
IPL is also used in the professional beauty market for hair removal and has
been in use for the last fifteen years. Smooth Pro+ now brings this innovative
technology to a new level of home use.
IPL technology offers superior safety with low energy levels:
IPL technology can achieve hair removal with the energy used only a fraction
of the energy used in other light-based hair removal equipment. The low energy
level used in SmothPro+ reduces its potential to cause harm or complications
and contributes to your overall safety.
Gentle treatment, even when used on sensitive body areas:
SmoothPro+ has been developed in close cooperation with leading dermatologists
for effective and gentle treatment, even when used on the most sensitive body
area.
SmoothPro+ is safe for your eyes:
Smooth Pro+ has a built-in safety feature for eye protection and it has been
tested to international standards to ensure that its outputs are safe for your
eyes.
SmoothPro+ protects your skin:
Part of the unique beauty experience with SmoothPro+ is the Detect and Set
feature. This feature means you do not have to worry about choosing skin tone
settings as the device automatically detects for you. It is simple and you can
see the skin tone setting indicated by the Power button rear side of the smart
skin tone sensor window.
Is Smooth Pro+ Suitable for You?
SmoothPro+ works easily, safely, and effectively on a wide variety of hair colors from naturally dark blonde to brown and black; and skin tones from very white to dark brown. IPL technology cannot be used to treat white/gray, light blonder, or red hair, and is not suitable for very dark skin. This is due to the high contrast required between the pigment in hair color and the pigment in skin tone.
Suitable for skin tone:
Note: In the figure above, “X” means that the device is not suitable for you

Light Sensitivity Test
Recommended Before Use
In order to determine if you have a Light Sensitivity Issue please follow the
instructions below. It is recommended that you test a small, less sensitive
area of skin (i.e., like your forearm).
- Press the power button to turn on the device. (refer to top. 26-29)
- Place the skin tone sensor window closely against the skin. The power light should change from green and red alternating lights into a solid red light, meaning that the skin type is appropriate for hair removal.
- Place the device on an area of the forearm. Select the lowest level and deliver a pulse on the selected test skin area.
- If you feel comfortable with the treatment level, increase it to Level 2 and perform an additional pulse on the next spot.
- Only if you feel comfortable, you may continue to reach Level 3, Level 4, or the maximum treatment level of 5.
- Wait 24 hours. You should NOT experience any adverse reaction during the next 24 hours. A bad reaction to light occurs if you have pain or discomfort in the treatment areas or any skin redness for more than two hours. It can be due to medication, supplements, or a possible skin issue.
How to Use
Preparations Before Use
-
Make sure the device is clean, dry, and intact before the treatment. Check the appliance, especially the light exit window and attachment, for trapped hair, dust, and fibers.
-
Shave off the surface hair in the treatment area.
Clean your skin and make sure it is hair-free, entirely dry, and free from oily substances (e.g. present in cosmetic products like deodorants, lotions, perfumes, tanning creams, and sunscreens). -
Plug the power adapter into a power source and connect the hair removal device; the power indicator will be red and flash.
-
Put on the goggles over your eyes before the hair removal treatment. Never shine the light source directly into the eyes.
Please note that treatment on unshaved or improperly shaved areas has a number of undesired effects:
- The light exit window and attachment may become contaminated with stray hairs and dirt. A contaminated light exit window and attachment can reduce the life and efficacy of the appliance.
- Burns or black spots that appear on the light exit window and attachment due to contamination can cause the treatment to become painful or cause skin reactions like redness and discoloration.
- Hairs on your skin can burn, which can result in an unpleasant smell.
Note:
- If your last depilation method involved removing hairs by the roots (e.g epilating, waxing, etc.), wait until you notice significant hair regrowth before you use the device. Do not use depilatory creams instead of shaving.
- If shaving causes wounds or lesions, your skin may be more sensitive and the light treatment may sometimes feel uncomfortable.
- Once the hairs stop growing back, which usually happens after 4-5 treatments, you no longer have to shave before you use the appliance.
Getting Started Steps
-
Press the power button to turn on the screen, it will show the pulse counter, treatment level, and remaining electric quantity. (As illustrated)
-
Place the skin tone sensor window closely against the skin. The power light should change from flashing red light lights into a solid red light, meaning that the skin type is appropriate for hair removal. It takes up to 5 seconds to test your skin tone.
-
After testing skin tone, the device will be set to level 1. Short press the power button to switch the treatment level. Select the appropriate intensity level for your skin, staying within the recommended settings by using the skin chart provided. (see p.7 )
-
Place the device at a 90 ° angle on the skin so that the attachment is in contact with the skin.
-
For easier use, stretch the area of skin you want to treat. On areas with softer skin, you may need to press the head onto the skin with slight pressure.
-
When the power light is solid green that means it is ready to flash.
-
Press the flash button to release a flash. You will see a bright flash and hear a popping noise; then you may feel a mild stinging or heat sensation.
-
Let go of the flash button after the appliance has flashed.
-
For the next flash, repeat steps 6 to 9. After each flash, it takes up to 3 seconds until the appliance is ready to flash again.
-
Slowly move the area for hair removal, avoiding going over the same spot more than once. This does not improve the effectiveness of the treatment but increases the risk of skin reactions.
-
To avoid untreated areas, always make sure there is some overlap with the previously treated area when you place the appliance on the skin. The effective light only comes out of the light exit window. Make sure the flashes are produced close to each other.
-
After the treatment, press and hold the power button for 3 seconds to turn off the device; unplug the unit after each treatment session.
-
After hair removal, it is recommended to increase moisturizing and avoid exposing the affected area to direct UV light.
-
Check the light exit window and the attachment for hairs and dirt and clean the appliance after use.
Operation Tips:
According to different treatment levels, there are some of our suggestions for
operation:
- Level 1 and Level 2: It is recommended to be used on the small areas such as underarm and facial hair below the chin line.
- Level 3to Level 5: It is recommended to be used on large areas such as legs.
- In addition, please note the actual operation should be combined with the real situation of individuals, such as it is not recommended for dark skin.
Important NOTES:
- Smooth Pro+ will not trigger a pulse if there is no full contact of the light window with the skin or your skin tone is too dark or tanned.
- Though the SmoothPro+ has been tested to international standards to ensure that its outputs are safe for your eye, it is recommended to wear goggles as an added precaution. Never look directly at the light coming from the device, as it may be harmful to the eyes.
- If there is no any operation in 3 minutes, SmoothPro+ will automatically turn off.
Skincare after treatment (Optional)
- After treatment, you can apply toner, and moisturizer to the treated skin area to moisturize it. If the treated area appears irritated, please use a coolant or a cold towel to cool down the skin.
- Please do not apply perfume, mask, or makeup that contains exfoliator to the treated skin area.
- Within 24 hours after treatment, avoid UV light; during skincare, remember to apply sun cream.
- If skin irritation lasts for over 24 hours without getting better, please consult doctors.
Treatment Schedule

Using on Different Areas
Using on the legs
- Check the recommended light intensities table on p.7 to see which settings are suitable for your legs.
- You can move the appliance up and down or across the leg, whichever is more convenient for you.
- Bony areas like the shinbone and ankles are more sensitive than other areas of the body. When you press the attachment hard onto these areas, the skin can be more susceptible to skin reactions, such as skin irritation and redness.
- The appliance may leave imprints on the skin in the treated areas. These imprints may show you where you can make the treated areas overlap.
Using in the bikini area
- Check the recommended light intensities table on p.7 to see which settings are suitable for your bikini area.
- In principle, SmoothPro+ is safe and gentle enough for the treatment of the entire bikini area (e.g. for ‘Brazilian’ or ‘Hollywood’ style). Use a lower setting on darker pigmented, more sensitive skin in the bikini area.
- Do not use the appliance on the inner labia, vagina, and anus. Men who wish to treat their pubic area must not use the appliance on the scrotum.
- For hygienic reasons, always clean the attachment before you start treating another body area.
Using in the bikini area
- Check the recommended light intensities table on p.7 to see which settings are suitable for your underarms.
- Make sure you remove any deodorant, perfume, cream, or other skincare product from your underarms before treatment.
- Raise your arm and place your hand on your neck to stretch the skin in the underarm area which makes the treatment easier to perform in this way.
Possible Skin Reactions
Common Skin Reactions
Slight Redness and Irritation: Your skin may show slight redness and/or
may prickle, tingle, or feel warm.
This reaction is absolutely harmless and disappears quickly.
A Skin Reaction Slmllar to Sunburn: This may occur on the treated area
for a short while. If this does not disappear within 3 days, we advise you to
consult a doctor.
Dry Skin and Itching: This may occur because of the combination of
shaving and light treatment. This is harmless and disappears within a few
days. You can cool the area with an ice pack or a wet cloth. If dryness
persists, you can apply a non-scented moisturizer to the treated area 24 hours
after the treatment.
Rare side effects
Burns, Excessive Redness, and Swelling: They are the result of using a
light intensity that is too high for your skin color. If these reactions do
not disappear within 3 days, we advise you to consult a doctor. Wait with the
next treatment until the skin has healed completely and make sure you use a
lower light intensity.
Skin Discolouration: Skin discoloration manifests itself as either a
darker or lighter patch than the surrounding area. This is the result of using
a light intensity that is too high for your skin color. If the discoloration
does not disappear within 2 weeks, we advise you to consult a doctor. Do not
treat discoloured areas until the discolouration has disappeared and your skin
has regained its normal skin color.
Skin Infection and Inflammation: This occurs very rarely and may be
caused by using the appliance on wounds or cuts that resulted from shaving, on
already existing wounds or on ingrown hairs.
Excessive Pain: This can occur during or after treatment if you have used
the appliance on unshaved skin if you use the appliance at a light intensity
that is too high for your skin color if you flash the same area more than
once, and if you use the appliance on open wounds, inflammations, infections,
tattoos, burns, etc (see ‘Contraindications’ on p.12-16 for more
information).
Maintenance
Cleaning
- Make sure to turn off and unplug the unit before cleaning.
- It is recommended to clean the treatment window after every session by using a clean cloth with a few drops of water to gently wipe the device.
- If it is hard to clean the edges of the attachment with the cleaning cloth, use a cotton bud instead. Make sure that no fluff or fibers stay behind on the attachment or on the light exit window.
- Never use scouring pads, abrasive cleaning agents, or aggressive liquids such as petrol or acetone to clean the appliance.
- Keep SmoothPro+ dry. Never submerge the device or any of its parts in water as may lead to electrocution risk.
Storage
- To avoid breakage or missing device and accessories, please store the product in the box after each use.
- Clean the device before you store it.
- Keep it in a cool and dry place, away from sunlight.
Do not store it in a wet or humid environment, otherwise, it may affect the product’s function.
FAQs on Smooth Pro+
Q: When I put the device against my skin, nothing happens. Why?
A: 1) You haven’t finished the skin tone testing step.
Please place the skin tone sensor window against the skin closely to finish
the testing.
2) Treatment window is not pressed closely against the skin.
Q: Why do I feel the heat and hurt during the operation?
A: 1) The treatment level is too high for you. Please press the power button
to choose a lower level.
2) There is hair left on the skin. Please shave and clean the hair before use.
Q: Are there any long-term effects of Smooth Pro+usage? Is it safe for my
skin?
A: Professional IPL treatments have already existed for over 25 years and
research hasn’t shown the appearance of skin cancer or fertility issues. No
serious side effects or damage from long-term use have been reported.
SmoothPro+ safety system ensures that light flashing is only possible if the
window of the device is in full contact with the skin. If your skin is too
dark, the skin color sensor prevents the emission of flashes. Side effects and
complications, while possible, are very unlikely as long as you use SmoothPro+
in accordance with this user manual.
Q: Is SmoothPro+ safe to use on the face?
A: By checking your skin type, you can choose the specific setting that will
ensure effective yet gentle treatment on your face. As the area around your
eyes is very sensitive, we recommend using SmoothPro+ only below the
cheekbones in order to avoid the risk of eye damage. To achieve optimal
results on the cheeks, upper lip and chin stand in front of the mirror to get
a good view of the area to be treated.
Q: Is the flashing light on SmoothPro+ safe for my eyes?
A: Smooth Pro+ does not hurt your eyes. The safety system prevents flashing
when the device is not fully in contact with the skin. Be sure to make good
skin contact to avoid unnecessary scattered light and never use SmoothPro+ in
the area around your eyes or for treating your eyebrows. You may wear goggles
during use. We recommend using SmoothPro+ in a well-lit room, to reduce the
perceived brightness of the flash.
