PRIOR TO FIRST USE

Before using the coffee machine for the first time, proceed as follows: Carefully unpack your coffee machine and remove all packaging material and possible promotional stickers. Keep the packaging (plastic bags and cardboard) out of reach of children. After unpacking the appliance, carefully check it for external damage that may have occurred during transport.

Check that the voltage stated on the information plate matches the mains voltage used in your region.

Place the coffee machine on a flat, stable and heat-resistant surface.

It is best to clean the interior of the new coffee machine prior to using it for the first time. This is done by filling the water reservoir with cold water up to the MAX 10 mark and using the appliance two to three times without coffee.

Clean the exterior of the appliance as described in section CLEANING AND MAINTENANCE.

MAKING COFFEE WITH COFFEE BEANS

  1. Lift the water reservoir from the coffee machine, fold open the cover and fill the reservoir under the tap with cold drinking water up to the required level (2 to 10 cups = 0.25L to 1.25L). Do not fill the reservoir above the MAX 10 mark. Place the reservoir back in the coffee machine.

  2. Swing open the filter holder. Remove the ring-shaped cover of the filter holder. Place the permanent, washable filter or a paper coffee filter (size 1×4) of which the edges have been folded back in the filter holder. This prevents the filter bag from folding inwards and closing.

  3. Place the ring-shaped cover back on the filter holder and fully swing back the filter holder, otherwise the glass jug will not fit properly under the filter holder.

  4. Place the glass jug on the hot plate by sliding it under the filter holder with drip stop, making sure the spout of the jug is in the centre, facing the coffee machine.

  5. Add coffee beans in the coffee bean holder on top of the coffee machine. The holder is able to hold maximum 120 grammes of coffee beans, which is sufficient for 2 full jugs of coffee (20 cups of 6 grammes of coffee).
Warning: Make sure that no foreign objects can end up in the coffee bean holder. These might damage the appliance.

  6. Insert the plug of the coffee machine in an earthed wall socket. If the plug is already in the socket, but the coffee machine is switched off, briefly press the [START/STOP] button to activate the operating panel of the coffee machine.

  7. Select the number of cups of coffee for which coffee beans should be ground by means of the rotary knob on the operating panel at the front of the coffee machine (2 10 cups). Adjust this number to the amount of water poured in the water reservoir.

  8. Use the rotary knob on top of the coffee machine to select coarse or fine ground coffee. Turn the stripe to the large coffee bean for coarse grind, or to the small coffee bean for fine grind.

  9. Select the required coffee strength by pressing the [LIGHT] or [STRONG] button. This determines how quickly the water passes through the coffee. At a low flow rate, the coffee has more time to acquire taste and this has an effect on the strength of the coffee. If you wish, press the [STRONG] button for extra strong coffee. The indicator led at the chosen setting [LIGHT] or [STRONG] lights up

  10. Start the coffee machine by pressing the [START/STOP] button. This button and the ring-shaped indicator led start to flash, the coffee beans are being ground and after that coffee is made.

  11. Once the filtering process has been completed, a beep will sound and the ring-shaped indicator led lights up continuously. Take the glass jug from the hot plate and pour the coffee. Tilt the glass jug by no more than 45 degrees to avoid spillage. The hot plate under the glass jug is switched on automatically when making coffee and is switched off again after 35 minutes (three beeps will sound and the ring-shaped indicator led goes out).

  12. Coffee tastes best immediately after it has been made, so do not wait too long before serving. The glass jug can immediately be placed back on the hot plate or you can pour the coffee into a thermos jug.

MAKING WITH SHOP BOUGHT EXTRA-FINE GRIND COFFEE

When making coffee with shop bought extra-fine grind coffee, you must add extra-fine grind coffee in the filter and press the [GRIND OFF] button so that the accompanying indicator led lights up before you start the coffee machine. In that case, no beans will be ground.

  3. Scoop the required amount of coffee (extra-fine grind) into the filter bag or permanent filter and gently shake the filter to even out the coffee. According to your taste, use 1 level measuring spoon per cup of coffee. This is approximately 5-7 grammes of coffee per cup. For 10 cups you will use 10 level measuring cups of extra-fine grind coffee.
  4. Place the ring-shaped cover back on the filter holder and fully swing back the filter holder, otherwise the glass jug will not fit properly under the filter holder.
  5. Place the glass jug on the hot plate by sliding it under the filter holder with drip stop, making sure the spout of the jug is in the centre, facing the coffee machine.
  6. Insert the plug of the coffee machine in an earthed wall socket. If the plug is already in the socket, but the coffee machine is switched off, briefly press the [START/STOP] button to activate the operating panel of the coffee machine
  7. Press the [GRIND OFF] button to switch off the grinding function. When the indicator led [GRIND OFF] lights up, coffee will be made without first grinding beans.
  8. The indicator led at the chosen setting [LIGHT] or [STRONG] lights up.
  9. Start the coffee machine by pressing the [START/STOP] button. This button and the ring-shaped indicator led light up and coffee will be made.
  11. Coffee tastes best immediately after it has been made, so do not wait too long before serving. The glass jug can immediately be placed back on the hot plate or you can pour the coffee into a thermos jug.

INTERRUPTING THE COFFEE MAKING PROCESS

If you want to interrupt the coffee making process, in order to pour a few cups for example, you must press the [START/STOP] button to switch off the coffee machine temporarily. The ring-shaped indicator led no longer flashes and the [START/STOP] indicator led lights up continuously. The drip stop prevents the appliance from dripping when you remove the glass jug from the coffee machine.
You can resume the coffee making process by placing the glass jug back under the filter holder and pressing the [START/STOP] button.
Caution: If you are making coffee with shop bought extra-fine grind coffee, press the [GRIND OFF] button after the interruption to switch off the grinding function. In that case the [GRIND OFF] indicator led lights up. If this led is extinguished, new coffee beans will be ground after the interruption, which is not what you want.

SWITCHING OFF THE COFFEE MACHINE

Press the [START/STOP] button for two seconds to switch off the coffee machine. The indicator leds switch off, as well as the hot plate.
Attention: The hot plate cools down slowly after switching off and could remain hot for some time.

Do not forget to remove the paper filter bag and throw it away or to remove the permanent filter and rinse it clean. Swing open the filter holder and remove the filter. Throw away the filter bag. When using the permanent filter, empty it, clean it and use it again. Allow the appliance to cool down properly first, before removing the filter.

CLEANING AND MAINTENANCE

Regularly clean the coffee machine. This is not only beneficial for the life span of the appliance, it also ensures optimum use of the appliance and, of course, good tasting coffee.

Cleaning should involve the following:

  • Prior to cleaning, always check that the coffee machine is switched off, cooled down and that the plug has been removed from the socket.
  • Remove all separate components from the appliance.
  • After each use, clean all separate components in hot water and a mild washing-up liquid. Then rinse thoroughly with hot water and wipe dry.
  • Press the drip stop at the filter outlet upwards a few times to make sure the filter outlet is dry.
  • Regularly clean the outside of the appliance and the hot plate with a slightly damp cloth and then wipe it dry with a dry cloth
  • Place back all components correctly in the appliance.

Warning:

  • Never use aggressive and/or abrasive cleaning agents when cleaning.
  • Never submerge the appliance, cord or plug in water.
  • The grinding system in the coffee bean holder is very sharp. Avoid touching it.

DE-SCALING

Regularly de-scale your coffee machine. The de-scaling intervals depend on the hardness of the mains water and the frequency at which the coffee machine is being used. Due to scaling, the heating element can become obstructed. This causes overheating, as a result of which the coffee machine is switched off automatically as a safety precaution and will no longer function. The coffee machine will have to be repaired.

We recommend de-scaling the appliance after making coffee 60 times. You can de-scale the coffee machine with a special de-scaling agent for coffee machines or with kitchen grade vinegar. If you use a special descaling agent for coffee machines , you must observe the instructions on the packaging of this agent.

When using kitchen grade vinegar , proceed as follows:

  1. Place the permanent filter or empty filter bag in the filter holder and make sure all loose parts are placed in the appliance correctly. Fill the water reservoir with clean, cold water and cold kitchen grade vinegar up to the MAX 10 mark. The water and kitchen grade vinegar ratio should be 4 : 1.
  2. Insert the plug into the socket. Press the [GRIND OFF] button and start the appliance by pressing the [START/STOP] button.
  3. Press the [START/STOP] button once more to pause the appliance when 2 to 4 cups of water with de-scaling agent have ended up in the glass jug.
  4. Leave the appliance for 15 minutes to allow the de-scaling agent to do its work. Then press the [START/STOP] to allow the remaining water to pass.
  5. The de-scaling process has been completed when the water reservoir and coffee filter are empty. Empty the glass jug and remove the permanent filter or filter bag from the filter holder.
  6. After de-scaling, allow a full reservoir of cold water to flow through the appliance at least 3 times, to remove all de-scaling liquid and vinegar residues and thus prevent a sour taste in the coffee.

Caution! If the coffee machine has not been used for some time, e.g. due to vacation, it is recommended to remove and clean all separate components. Then place the cleaned separate components back on their place and allow the coffee machine to make one run with clean water. In this way you will prevent a possible foreign taste.

TIPS FOR MAKING GOOD TASTING COFFEE

  1. A clean coffee machine is essential for making delicious coffee. Regularly clean and de-scale the coffee machine, as described in CLEANING AND MAINTENANCE and DE-SCALING.
  2. Use cold and clean drinking water for making coffee.
  3. Store coffee beans and extra-fine grind coffee on a cool and dry place. Close opened packages air-tight and store them in the fridge.
  4. The optimum coffee taste can be achieved by grinding fresh coffee beans just before you start making coffee.
