User Guide

FireAvert helps protect your home from the leading cause of home fires in the United States—unattended cooking—by automatically disconnecting power to your appliance or stovein the event that fire or smoke are detected. FireAvert activates in response to the audible signal of an existing smoke detector—a patented pairing feature- syncs to the sound signature on your smoke alarm. FireAvert can be installed in 20 minutes or less with basic plumbing tools. {All gas fittings and the solenoid must be installed in accordance to local and national codes.}–Please contact a professional plumber if you are in need of plumbing assistance.

The FireAvert is not intended to replace the user’s own responsibility and good judgment in preventing fires. The FireAvert aids in preventing accidental unattended cooking fires in the home kitchen. FireAvert does NOT prevent rapidly combusting fires such as grease and oil fires, rather it is most effective at preventing cooking fires where smoke is present for several minutes before a fire ignites.

FireAvert, LLC only provides warranties as stated on the limited warranty claim found in this package.

RECOMMENDED INSTALLATION SETUP
(diagram for gas stove setups only)

Install FireAvert with basic plumbing tools in 20 minutes or less.

1. Plug the FireAvert into the wall and then plug the stove into the FireAvert plug-in.
2. Sync your FireAvert with your home fire alarm.
3. Test your FireAvert auto appliance  shutoff with your home fire alarm.

General Warnings & Safety Instructions

• Read ALL instructions BEFORE attempting to install FireAvert. Failure to follow all instructions and warnings may result in damage to the FireAvert or your appliance, and may cause loss of property, bodily injury or death.
• NEVER attempt to install a FireAvert that appears damaged or broken.
• NEVER attempt to force the FireAvert plug or receptacle connections.
• Never attempt to modify, alter, or adapt any part of the FireAvert for use other than outlined in this User Guide. This model of FireAvert is designed for use with NEMA 5-15 outlets and plugs ONLY.
• DO NOT attempt to open the FireAvert, it contains no user-serviceable components. Attempting to open or disassemble the FireAvert voids the warranty and may render the FireAvert inoperable.
• DANGER! HIGH VOLTAGE When working with electrical devices, basic precautions should always be followed to prevent fire, injury, or death.
• FireAvert devices are intended to be installed and used in environments with temperatures between 40°F-100°F (4.4°C-37.8°C), humidity less than 80% and not excessively dusty. Dust build-up, excessive heat, or humidity may cause malfunction. [NFPA 72 29.8.3.4(2)]
• DO NOT attempt to install or remove the FireAvert unit while the outlet is powered ON. You must switch OFF the circuit breaker that powers the outlet before installing or removing the unit.
• DO NOT pinch or squeeze the FireAvert unit between the appliance and wall outlet after installation is complete. Consider adding an extension cord to the fireavert from an alternate outlet if there is insufficient space behind stove.
• DO NOT use the FireAvert without successfully pairing it to the smoke alarm.

Maintenance

The FireAvert should be checked for proper function monthly. Follow the same instructions to check the FireAvert as used in the initial verification test. Please see Steps 15-16 in the installation guide.

If the FireAvert device enters protection mode (in event of a fire/smoke) and disconnects power to the appliance, follow the instructions for rebooting the device found in this manual. Do NOT attempt to reboot it any other way.

If at any time the device becomes un-paired with the smoke alarm, as indicated by a flashing RED LED Indicator and a chirping noise, you must re- pair the unit as described in this manual before further use. If this problem persists, discontinue use and contact customer service.

In the event that a new smoke alarm OR heating appliance is installed in the home, the FireAvert must be reset and paired to the new smoke alarm. See “New Smoke Alarms” in the Operating Instructions for details.

Approved Smoke Alarms

The FireAvert is designed to work with any modern RESIDENTIAL smoke detector typically found in retail stores that has a frequency around 3.2kHz.

{Disclaimer: FireAvert has not been fully evaluated to work with all low frequency (520Hz) alarms}. If for any reason the FireAvert device does not pair with your smoke alarm, please consider purchasing a new smoke alarm.

The fire-warning equipment listed herein, known generally by industry designation as a “smoke” alarm accessory”, has been evaluated and found to be compliant for performance and operation when installed in accordance with the installation requirements for smoke alarms at a radial distance of 20ft (6.1m) along a horizontal flow path from a stationary or fixed cooking appliance. [NFPA 72 §29]

Installation & Instructions

1. Switch OFF circuit breaker to the appliance.
Note: Test your appliance for power to verify that the correct breaker has been switched off.

2. Move appliance away from the wall to provide access to the power outlet and unplug the appliance by gently rocking the plug up and down and from side to side while withdrawing the plug.

3. Insert the stove (or appliance) plug into the receptacle on the FireAvert. Line up the plug blades on the back of the FireAvert with the power outlet on the wall and use both hands to insert the FireAvert firmly into the outlet until the FireAvert sits completely flush against the outlet face.

Some stoves require a pilot light to be re-ignited after the main gas line has been shut off. Please refer to the stove manufacturer user guide for instructions on re-igniting pilot lights.

4. Turn the main gas line valve to the OFF position and disconnect the oven gas line from the main gas line.
5. Take both 1/2” to 1/2 (or 3/4)” fitting reducers and insert both 1/2” non-beveled ends to either side of the solenoid.
NOTE: Apply pipe thread sealant to the male pipe threads that are inserted into the solenoid. DO NOT USE PIPE THREAD SEALANT ON ANY BEVELED ENDS, BECAUSE IT WILL NOT OBTAIN A LEAK-FREE SEAL.

6. Take the 6” gas hose and attach it to the 1/2” (or 3/4“) end of the reducer fitting, making sure it screws in on the side where the arrow is located on the solenoid.

The arrow on the solenoid indicates the direction the gas should flow (See figure above).

7. Attach the other end of the 6” gas hose to the main gas line.
8. Connect the gas line from the stove to the 1/2” (or 3/4”) opposite reducer fitting on the solenoid.

9. Connect the power adaptor to the solenoid, then insert the solenoid power adaptor into the open receptacle on the FireAvert device.

10. Turn the main gas line valve back to the ON position, to allow gas to flow back into the system.

DO NOT TURN ON APPLIANCE until all connections have been leak tested properly.

DO NOT use lighters, matches, candles, open flames or other sources of ignition to leak test connections!

NOTE: Test all connections with non-corrosive gas leak test solution; bubbles will indicate a leak. If a leak is detected, turn off gas supply before further tightening connections. Water rinse and towel dry connection once test is complete.

VERIFY- Wait at least 10 min or more to be certain that all vapors have dissipated. If the leak test confirms connections do not leak gas and you do not smell any gas, THEN light pilot(s) if necessary and turn on appliance again. – If you smell gas, turn off the gas at main shutoff valve and call a licensed plumber to check for leaks and fix any other problems.

11. Push the appliance back against the wall.
NOTE: YOU MUST PUSH THE APPLIANCE BACK AGAINST THE WALL AND SECURE THE ANTI- TIP BRACKET BEFORE TURNING ON THE CIRCUIT BREAKER. Pairing the FireAvert with the appliance out from the wall will cause the FireAvert to not properly function with your smoke alarm. Make sure that you do not pinch or squeeze the FireAvert between the appliance and the wall; consider adding an extension cord.

12. Switch ON circuit breaker to the appliance. After installation, the FireAvert automatically enters Pairing Mode as indicated by a solid GREEN LED Indicator with an intermittent RED flash and chirping noise.

13. Prepare the appliance for pairing by ensuring that ALL knobs/dials/buttons are switched OFF.

14. Pair the FireAvert to the nearest smoke alarm by pressing and holding the “Test” button on the smoke alarm until the alarm sounds for approximately 30 seconds. When successfully paired, the LED indicator on the FireAvert will remain solid GREEN, and the RED flashing LED with intermittent chirping will stop. Smoke alarms are loud and can damage hearing. PLEASE USE EAR PROTECTION!

15. Test by turning the appliance ON so it is drawing full power, then press and hold the test button on the smoke alarm for approximately 1 minute. If the alarm pairing was successful, the FireAvert will cut power to the appliance within 10-40 seconds.

NOTE: FireAvert for Gas stoves will cut power to the stove and turn OFF the gas solenoid every time a smoke alarm activates. FireAvert for Appliances requires a full power draw from the appliance before it will activate.

16. Reboot the FireAvert. In the event that the FireAvert enters Protection Mode and cuts power to your appliance, you must reboot the FireAvert before it can be further used. To reboot the device, switch OFF the circuit breaker to the appliance for 10 seconds, then switch it back ON again. The reboot is successful when power and(or) gas has been restored to the range (or appliance) after the circuit breaker has been turned ON.

WARNING! Risk of fire or explosion if FireAvert is rebooted AND the oven and burner knobs have not been turned off.

ALWAYS TURN OFF OVEN and BURNER knobs prior to rebooting/resetting the FireAvert device.

INSTALLTION IS NOW COMPLETE!

*NOTE: FireAvert’s ability to recognize a smoke alarm may be compromised by loud music, background noise such as fans or vacuums, or if the paired smoke alarm is too far away.

Test
Perform a user test for your FireAvert device(s) monthly with smoke alarm tests. See steps 15-16.

Operating Instructions

FireAvert Protection Mode- After pairing the FireAvert to the smoke alarm, the device constantly monitors for the sound of a smoke alarm. The FireAvert has a 20 second delay from the time the smoke alarm sounds until it enters Protection Mode and disconnects power to the appliance. When FireAvert activates and enters Protection Mode, it automatically disconnects power to the appliance, closes the gas solenoid (if FireAvert for Gas stoves is installed), and the LED indicator on the FireAvert will change to solid RED.

New Smoke Alarms- If a new smoke alarm or range/ appliance is installed in the home or building where the FireAvert is located, the FireAvert will need to be restored to Paring mode and then paired with the new smoke alarm. With the FireAvert plugged in, push the FireAvert “Reset Button” (see orientation diagram to locate). The FireAvert LED will begin flashing RED and GREEN, with intermittent chirping and the appliance will lose power. The FireAvert is now in pairing mode, proceed to steps 13-16 in the installation instructions.
