Users of 05, 0810-series, Df. 0750,07200,07100, or 05200cameras should note that if the standby timer is allowed to expire, the focus position will change when the timer is restarted. Refocus before shooting. longer standby times are recommended for manual focus and in other situations in which you may not release the shutter immediately after focusing.

Autofocus

Focus is adjusted automatically when the camera is in autofocus mode. The focus ring can also be used to focus the camera if the shutter-release but to riskept pressed half way (or if the AF-ON button is kept pressed);this is known as ·autofocus with manual override” (MIA). Autofocus will resume when the shutter-release button is pressed halfway (or the AF-ON button is pressed) a second time. Note that touching the focus ring while auto focus is in effect will change the focus position.

Manual Focus

When the camera is in manual focus mode. focus can be adjusted by rotating the lens focusring.

A Note on Wide- and Super Wide-Angle Lenses

Autofocus may not provide  the desired results in situations like those shown below. In these cases. use manual focus. or use focus lock to focus on another subject at the same distance and then recompose the photograph

Objects in the baground occupy more of the focus point than the main subject:
If the focus point contains both foreground and background objects, the camera may focus on the background and the subject may be out of focus.

The subject contains many fine details:
The camera may have difficulty focusing on subjects that lack contrast or appear smaller than objects in the background.

For more information, see “Getting Good Results with Autofocus· in the camera manual.

Zoom

Before focusing, rotate the zoom ring to adJUSt the focal length and frame the photograph

Depth of Field

  • Thefocal lengths at which built-in flash units can be used vary with the camera; see the camera manual. Peripheral illumination may drop if builtin flash units are used at shorter focal lengths.
  • Using Built-in Flash Units Without Vignetting Vignetting’ may occur with the built-in flash unitsfor the following cameras when the lens is attached. The minimum focus distances at which the flash can be used without vignetting are given below.

Using Built-in Flash Units Without Vignetting

1 “Vignetting” refers to shadows caused by the end of the lens blocking the light from the flash.

2 Lens hood not attached
For the latest information on vignetting with this lens, see the camera manual.

Vibration Reduction (VR)

Vibration reduction (VR) is available when the lens is mounted on the camera and the shutter-release button is pressed halfway. Vibration reduction can be turned on and off using the Optical VR option in the camera menus; when on, intreduces blur caused by camera shake, allowing shutter speeds up to 3.S stops slower than would otherwise be the case, increasing the range of shutter speeds available. The effectsofVR on shutter speed are measured according to camera and Imaging Products Association (CIPA) standards; FX-format lenses are measured using FX-format digital cameras, DX-format lenses using DX-format cameras. Zoom lenses are measured at maximum zoom.

Using Vibration Reduction: Notes

  • When using vibration reduaion, press the shuner-release button halfway and wait for the image in the viewfinder to stabilize before pressing the shutter-release button the rest of the way down.
  • When vibration reduction is aaive, the image in the viewfinder may be blurred after the shutter is released. This does not indicate malfunction.
  • When the camera is panned, vibration reduction applies only to motion that is not part of the pan (if the camera is panned horizontally, for example, vibration reduction will be applied only to vertical shake), making it much easier to pan the camera smoothly in a wide arc.
  • If the camera is equipped with a built-in flash, vibration reduction will be disabled while the flash charges.
  • Vibration reduction is generally recommended when the camera is mounted on a tripod, although you may prefer to turn it off depending on shooting conditions and the type of tripod.

The Lens Hood

The lens hoods protect the lens and block stray light that would otherwise cause flare or ghosting.

Attaching the Head

Align the lens hood mounting mark ( ) with the lens hood alignment mark and rhen rorate the hood (❷) until the  mark is aligned with the lens hood lockmark (—O).

When attaching or removing the hood, hold it near the symbol on its base and avoid gripping it too tightly. Vignetting may occur if the hood is not correctly attached. The hood can be reversed and mounted on the lens when not in use.

Lens Care

  • Do not pick up or hold the lens or camera using only the lens hood.
  • Keep the CPU contacts clean.
  • Use a blower to remove dust and lint from the lens surfaces. To remove smudges and fingerprints, apply a small amount of ethanol or lens cleaner to a soft, clean cotton cloth or lens-cleaning tissue and clean from the center outwards using a circular motion, taking care not to leave smears or touch the glass with your fingers.
  • Never use organic solvents such as paint thinner or benzene to clean the lens.
  • The lens hood or Neutral Color (NO filters can be used to protect the front lens element.
  • Attach the front and rear caps before placing the lens in its lens case.
  • If the lens will not be used for an extended perio.d, store it in a cool, dry location to prevent mold and rust. Do not store in direct sunlight or with naphtha or camphor moth balls.
  • Keep the lens dry. Rusting of the internal mechanism can cause irreparable damage.
  • Leaving the lens in extremely hot locations could damage or warp parts made from reinforced plastic.
  • Rapid changes in temperature may cause damaging condensation inside and outside the lens. Before taking the lens from a warm to a cold environment or vice versa, place it in its case or a plastic bag to slow the change in temperature.
