INTRODUCTION

Congratulations on choosing the SH101 spare wheel holder. This has been produced according to very high standards and has undergone careful quality control procedures.
No place among the caravan for the standard spare wheel holder because of a mounted manoeuvring system? The SH101 spare wheel holder is the ideal solution! The flexible spare wheel holder can easily be mounted under the chassis. This way the manoeuvring system and the spare wheel holder both can be fitted on the chassis. The spare wheel holder is very light and very easy to install without drilling.
Using the telescopic arm you can take the spare wheel safely and easily at the edge of the roadside from the holder. You can pull out the holder until the spare tire is easily accessible.

Before proceeding with installation and starting to use the spare wheel holder, please read this manual very carefully and be aware of all the safety instructions! The owner of the caravan will always be responsible for correct use. Keep this manual inside your caravan for future reference.

INTENDED USE

The SH101 spare wheel holder is suitable for single axle and twin axle caravans.
Suitable only for L-profiled and U-profiled chassis with a chassis thickness between min.
2.8mm and max. 3.5mm.

SPECIFICATIONS

  • Designation SH101
  • Weight Ca. 6kg (excl. spare wheel)
  • Maximum load 23kg
  • Minimum distance between chassis members 1300mm (if needed shorten thin tube)
  • Maximum distance between chassis members 1850mm

SAFETY GUIDELINES

Read this user manual carefully before installation and use. Failure to comply with these rules could result in serious injury or damage to property.

These symbols identify important safety precautions. They mean CAUTION! WARNING! SAFETY FIRST! IMPORTANT INFORMATION!

Before starting the installation of the spare wheel holder under the caravan:

Check the towing load of your vehicle and the gross weight of your caravan in order to establish whether they are designed for the additional weight. The spare wheel holder itself has a weight of about 6kg and a traditional spare wheel has a weight of about 15- 20kg.
Only use adapters and accessories that are supplied or recommended by the manufacturer.
Make sure the chassis is in good condition without any damage and is free from rust, dirt etc.
Determine the location of the spare wheel holder so that it is easily accessible in case of a flat tire.
Do not remove, change or alter any parts of the chassis, axle, suspension or brake mechanism. Any drilling of holes in the chassis is not allowed.
Stop work immediately if you are in doubt about the assembly or any procedures and consult one of our engineers (Please refer to contact information on the last page of this manual).
Do not install the unit if you are under the influence of drugs, alcohol or medication that could impair your ability to use the equipment safely.

INSTALLATION

FOR PROFESSIONAL INSTALLATION ONLY! These instructions are for general guidance. Installation procedures may vary depending on caravan type.
Working under a vehicle without appropriate support is extremely dangerous!

Place the caravan on a hard, level surface. The use of a lifting ramp or an assembly pit is ideal for access and personal safety.
Unpack all the components and check for the presence of all parts (see package contents list).

The spare wheel holder is flexible to assemble under the caravan. Find a suitable location for the spare wheel holder including spare wheel:

  • The spare wheel should be mounted as tight as possible against the bottom of the caravan. Before installing, make sure that major components such as drains, gas Lines, are not in the way.
  • Check a proper weight distribution (in front of or behind the axle, and also depending on the position of the manoeuvring system).
  • For the best possible driving behaviour, the spare wheel should be placed as close as possible near the axle of the caravan.
  • In the determination of the position, it is important that the spare wheel can be taken from the holder safely and easily at the edge of the roadside.

Clean the area around the chassis and the caravan bottom thoroughly so that all components can be properly mounted.

First assemble the chassis clamp plates on the left chassis side (driver’s side). Use the M10x60 bolt, 2 M10 washers, M10 locking nut and fix it “by hand”, so much so that the chassis mounting clamp can be just shifted.

Installation

Mount the chassis clamp plates on the right chassis side (passenger side). Use again the M10x60 bolt, 2 M10 washers, M10 locking nut and fix it “by hand”, so much so that the chassis mounting clamp can be just shifted.

Installation

Slide the transverse bracket (C), with the welded-on nut upwards, over the thicker tube (B) of the Telescopic bracket and then slide thinner tube (A) in the thicker tube (B).

Installation

Place the assembled telescopic bracket under the caravan and attach the thinner tube (L -shape) to the left chassis bracket by the M10x60 bolt, 2 M10 washers and M10 locking nut (torque 5Nm). Because there are various spare wheel widths and chassis heights, three different heights are available. Make sure the spare wheel will finally be firmly fixes (caught) between the bracket and the caravan bottom. Possibly try first.

Installation

Determine the final position of the spare wheel and secure thereafter the transverse bracket with the M10x85 threaded pin (turn into the welded nut). Lock the threaded pin then with the M10 nut so it will not come loose.

Installation

A good and balanced weight is essential for proper handling of the caravan!

Mount the M10x190 T-bolt on the right chassis bracket (3 heights available) by the M10x60 bolt, 2 M10 washers and M10 locking nut (torque 5Nm).

Installation

For optimum and safe functioning (properly clamp securing the spare wheel), it is important that there is 10mm space (A) between the chassis mounting clamp bolt and the bracket. If necessary, fill the space between the wheel and the caravan bottom with a wooden bar.

Installation

Make sure the whole system is in the right position, the wheel does not touch any vital parts and is well caught between the bottom and the bracket. Finally tighten the chassis mounting clamp bolts (torque 25Nm).
Place the spare wheel on the bracket and push the bracket to the bottom so that the spare wheel is well caught between the bottom and the bracket. Attach the spare wheel with the M10 wing nut and big M10 washer on the threaded pin of the transverse bracket.

Secure the bracket with the M10 wing nut and big M10 washer on the T-bolt of the right chassis mounting clamp and tighten it tightly.
For extra security, you must drill a 3mm hole through the wing nut and T-bolt in order to put through the cotter pin so that the nut cannot come loose.
Saw off any excessive length of the T-bolt, however, retain at least about 60mm.
The spare wheel holder is now ready for use.

Installation

OPERATION

Placing spare wheel:

Before placing the spare wheel, you should first ensure that the caravan is in a safe place and is stable (steadies down).

  • Remove the cotter pin from the wing nut.
  • Loosen the wing nut and carefully bring down the bracket.
  • Pull the bracket towards you (do not pull too far) so you can easily put the spare wheel in place.
  • Place the spare wheel on the bracket at the height of the transverse bracket and secure it with the wing nut.
  • Slide the bracket and put the bracket back to the bottom and secure it with the wing nut on the T-bolt.
  • Finally place the cotter pin in the appropriate hole from the wing nut.

Using spare wheel:

To use the spare wheel, you should first ensure that the caravan is in a safe place and is stable (steadies down).

  • Remove the cotter pin from the wing nut.
  • Loosen the wing nut and carefully bring down the bracket.
  • Pull the bracket towards you (do not pull too far) so you can easily take off the spare wheel.

After removing the spare wheel, at least replace the bracket back under the caravan:

  • Slide the bracket and put the bracket back to the bottom and secure it with the wing nut on the T-bolt.
  • Finally place the cotter pin in the appropriate hole from the wing nut.

Caution! When standard alloy wheels are used on the caravan and the spare wheel has a steel rim, make sure that you have adequate bolts to fix the steel rim; there is a difference in the fixing bolts!

MAINTENANCE

Regularly clean the spare wheel bracket and spare wheel with a water hose to dissolve mud etc. Do not use any cleaning agents that contain solvent or oil, it will harm the rubber.
Once a year have your spare wheel bracket maintained and visually inspected. This inspection must include all the bolt/nut connections and lubrication of movable parts/joints.

Maintenance tires

Studies have shown that increasing age of a tire, the strength slightly decreases, which means that the chance of a blowout increases with older tires. Tires which are mounted under a caravan can last for years, because they do not make so many kilometres as a car. Caravan tires therefore often have sufficient profile, but show, because of age, sidewall cracks and because of the age, the risk of a blowout increases. As rubber ages, the VACO association (Dutch tire industry) advises after 6 years to check the tires yearly by a tire specialist and after 10 years preventively replace them. The production date of the tire can be read on the sidewall of the tire. The manufacturers code or the DOT code can give you information of the age of the tire. Since the year 2000 there will be a four digit number on the tire; for example 4501. The number 45 stands for week 45 and the number 01 stands for the year 2001.

In case of any failure or problem, please contact your supplier.
