MSA 360 2002 Latchways Sealed Self-Retracting Lifeline
PRODUCT WARNING

  • The Latchways Sealed SRL shall only be used for its intended purpose and within its limitations. Further clarification may be obtained from MSA.
  • Users of Latchways Sealed SRLs shall be medically fit and suitably trained. Latchways Sealed SRLs shall not be used by pregnant women, minors or those under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
  • Instructions shall be retained and provided to all Users of Latchways Sealed SRLs in the language of the destination country, even when resold. Latchways Sealed SRLs shall be used in accordance with these instructions.
  • Ensure both Latchways Sealed SRL connectors are compatible with the attachments to which they are connected (to prevent roll-out), and are fully closed and locked before use.
  • For use in overhead applications, with a maximum deviation angle of 30° from the vertical. Do not use over an edge or in a situation where a fall could result in contact with an edge.
  • For a single User only, with a maximum weight of 140 kg (310 lb) (including tools).
  • The Latchways Sealed SRL shall be connected to a suitable anchor point (Table 1).
  • To reduce the risk of a swing fall, where striking objects can cause serious injury, it is preferable to anchor directly above the User.
  • The Latchways Sealed SRL shall be protected from sharp edges, abrasive surfaces, fire, acids, caustic solutions, or temperatures outside the range -40°C to 54°C (-40°F to 130°F).
  • The lifeline shall not come into contact with hot surfaces (such as hot pipes); become entangled with moving machinery; or contact with electrical hazards (such as power lines).
  • Unsuitable for use on unstable surfaces, fine grain materials or particulate surfaces such as sand or coal.
  • Additional lanyard connectors shall not be connected, as this would serve to lengthen the lifeline and increase freefall.
  • For use within a cage only when a risk assessment has considered the risk of striking the cage during a fall.
  • The Latchways Sealed SRL shall not be altered or added to and shall be repaired in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions. Repairs shall be completed by a Technician2 in accordance with MSA’s instructions.
  • Latchways Sealed SRLs that have arrested a fall or are unable to pass an inspection shall be tagged “unusable” and disposed of.

Failure to follow these warnings can result in serious personal injury or death.

General information

The Latchways Sealed SRL is intended to be used as a connecting element within a Personal Fall Arrest System. It shall be used vertically in situations where User mobility is required and fall protection is needed.

Intended use and product limitations

The Latchways Sealed SRL is suitable for use in areas in which explosive atmospheres caused by mixtures of air and gases, vapours or mists or by air/dusts mixtures are likely to occur, as per BS EN 13463-1:2001 equipment group II, category 2.
If required, Latchways Sealed SRL can be supplied with a secondary tether line facility—for more details contact MSA

Installation and use

  • A written rescue plan and the means to implement it shall be in place to deal promptly with emergencies that may arise during use.
  • The connector shall be connected to a designated fall arrest attachment of a full body harness.
  • A fully body harness is the only acceptable body holding device.

System Requirements.

Component EN USA Canada
Anchorage connector standard EN 795* or TS 16415 ANSI Z359.18 CSA Z259.15
Harness standard EN 361* ANSI Z359.11 CSA Z259.10 -12

  • Ensure the Latchways Sealed SRL is attached to a compatible anchor – flexible anchors, such as anchor lines or cantilever structures can affect the ability of the Latchways Sealed SRL to lock-on in the case of a fall. For further clarification, contact MSA.
  • In use, the Latchways Sealed SRL lifeline will extract and retract without hesitation. Do not allow the lifeline to pass through legs or under arms, or wrap around structure.
  • If the lifeline does not retract in use, fully extract the lifeline and slowly allow it to retract. If the lifeline continues to hesitate in retraction, contact MSA.
  • When not in use, store with the lifeline fully retracted as prolonged periods of full extraction may weaken the retraction spring. If the lifeline is released it will retract at high speed potentially damaging internal parts, causing kinks in the lifeline and/or deploying the load indicator. If the Latchways Sealed SRL is positioned high above the Users head, the use of a secondary tether line is acceptable to allow the Latchways SRL to fully retract and yet enable retrieval of the connector. It is recommended that secondary tether lines are removed from the device before use.

Fall clearance

  • Ensure sufficient clearance exists to prevent striking an obstacle or leading edge (e.g., crossbeams and girders) during a fall. Insufficient clearance, obstructions and leading edges can prevent the function of the Latchways Sealed SRL.
  • A minimum of 3 m (10 ft) (including a safety factor of 1 m) from the working level to the nearest obstruction, lower level or ground underneath a hazard shall be maintained.
  • When a User is kneeling or bending down, an additional 0.9 m (3 ft) of clearance may be required.
  • If the Latchways Sealed SRL is attached to an anchor that may deflect or deploy in a fall, such as a deadweight anchor or anchor line, the additional deployment of that device shall be added to the minimum clearances.
  • To reduce the potential for injury in a fall, the fall distance shall be minimised.

Cleaning maintenance and storage

If required, the Latchways Sealed SRL exterior and lifeline may be cleaned using a damp cloth and warm water (max 40°C), and allowed to dry naturally before use. Excessive build-up of dirt, paint etc. may compromise both retraction and strength
of the lifeline.
Store or transport the Latchways Sealed SRL in a cool, dry, clean environment, away from dust, oil and direct sunlight. During transportation, the device shall be protected to prevent damage or contamination. Examine the Latchways Sealed SRL after long periods of storage prior to returning it to service.

General condition| Examine for signs of excessive damage, wear, corrosion or contamination. Check the entire length of the cable for any signs of corrosion, damage or contamination. Ensure correct operation of connectors.
Extraction / retraction| Inspect line extraction and retraction by pulling out the entire length of line and letting it retract back into the housing in a controlled manner. The line operation shall be smooth and unhesitant (maintain a light tension on the lifeline whilst it retracts).
Repeat three times.
Lock-on| Pull sharply on the lifeline and ensure device locks. Repeat three times.

The safety of the User relies upon the continued efficiency and durability of the equipment therefore pre-use checks shall be completed before each use. Periodic examinations shall be completed by a person, other than the User, competent1 in the examination of Latchways Sealed SRLs, in accordance with these instructions. The interval will be dictated by the usage local regulations or environmental conditions and will be at least annually. Record shall be kept of the results of the examination. An example periodic examination log can be downloaded from this product’s page on MSAsafety.com by clicking on the Literature tab.

Usage shall be determined by a competent person.
Maximum product life:
The Latchways Sealed SRL has no fixed service life. Factors such as (but not limited to) environmental conditions (e.g., exposure to temperatures >54°C (>130°F) or contact with chemicals), incorrect storage, frequency of use and local regulations may reduce service life. Continued use is dependent upon passing pre-use checks and periodic examinations.
If an issue is identified, the Latchways Sealed SRL has been subject to a fall or any doubt exists as to the suitability of the Latchways Sealed SRL it shall be tagged “unusable” and withdrawn from service. Prior to return to service MSA or Technician shall confirm, in writing, that the Latchways Sealed SRL has passed examination.
*Date of first use shall be administratively provable. Where the date of first use is unknown, then the next previous administratively provable date shall be used, e.g., date of purchase or date of manufacture.

  1. Competent person: A person, other than the User, competent in the examination of PPE in accordance with MSA instructions.
  2. Technician: A person, other than the User, trained by MSA in the examination, recertification and repair of SRLs, in accordance with MSA instructions.
