Risk for users/warnings

  • Contraindication (EU): There are no known contraindications.
  • Safety regulations: Only use the pumpset if it is clean (Section 5). Check the pumpset for damage after cleaning. This device must not be used during pregnancy because expressing can trigger contractions.
  • According to Regulation (EU) on medical devices, any serious incidents that occur in connection with the product must be reported to the manufacturer and the competent authorities of the Member State in which the user resides.

Assembling the pumpset

Important: Before using for the fi rst time and after every expressing process, wash parts a–f and i with water and washing-up liquid in accordance with point 5.1 Cleaning. Only use the pumpset if it is dry.

  1. Wash hands thoroughly with soap.

  2. Insert the membrane (a) into the valve base (b) and press in fi rmly.

  3. Put the valve (c) over the valve base (b). The arrows must line up.ardo-Alyssa-Hands-Free-Double-Pumpset-fig-10

  4. Insert the valve base (b) into the outer shell (d). When doing so, fi t the semicircular tabs of the funnel into the semicircular slots on the outer shell and fi rmly put the membrane (a) over the edge of the round opening of the outer shell. Now the valve is parallel to the lines on the outer shell and the valve lips are closed.ardo-Alyssa-Hands-Free-Double-Pumpset-fig-11

  5. Insert the breast shell (e), ensuring that the slot on the edge of the breast shell comes to rest on the slot of the outer shell (d). (This forms a spout opening for the breast milk.) Put the edge of the breast shell over the edge of the outer shell and press down fi rmly.ardo-Alyssa-Hands-Free-Double-Pumpset-fig-12

  6. Firmly press the membrane cap (f) onto the outer shell (d) as shown.ardo-Alyssa-Hands-Free-Double-Pumpset-fig-13
Important: To avoid accidental kinking of the tubes, which might diminish suction, the mem-brane caps may be turned such that the tube entries are oriented towards each other.

  7. Connect one side of the tube (g) – the one without a tube connector – to the membrane cap (f).ardo-Alyssa-Hands-Free-Double-Pumpset-fig-14

  8. Connect the other side of the tube (g) to the breastpump using the tube connector (h).

  9. Assemble and connect the second collection cup in the same way.ardo-Alyssa-Hands-Free-Double-Pumpset-fig-16

Cleaning and disinfection

Manual cleaning

  • Before using for the fi rst time and after every subsequent use, dismantle the pumpset into its individual parts and rinse for at least 1 minute with cold tap water. Then clean using standard washing-up liquid and warm water (not over +40 °C / 104 °F). Rinse using lots of clean water. Ensure that all washing-up liquid residue is removed. Be careful when cleaning the valve and the membrane. If they are damaged, there will be no vacuum or only a weak vacuum. Clean the valve between your thumb and index fi nger using washing-up liquid and warm water (do not use any brushes). Check the valve for cracks and fraying. Replace the valve regularly and if the vacuum is weak.
  • Leave all parts to air dry on a clean surface and in a clean location.
  • The following parts must not be washed or rinsed: tubes (g), tube connector (h), carrying solution.

Manual disinfection

  • 1× daily after manual cleaning
    • Make sure there is enough water in the pot in order to prevent damage/deformation.
    • Boil the parts a–e and i in their dismantled state for 5 minutes.
    • Allow the parts to cool down and dry on a clean surface.
  • Check the individual parts for cracks and changes to the surface according to the cleaning and disinfection process. If you discover any changes, dispose of the part affected and replace with a new one.
  • The following parts must not be boiled: membrane cap (f), tubes (g), tube connector (h), carrying solution.

Application

Washing hands
Wash hands thoroughly with soap.

Placing the collection cup in the bra

  • Fasten the bra, but do not put the cups of the bra over the breast yet. Now place an assembled collection cup on the breast. When doing so, position the nipple in the centre of the funnel. Then pull the bra cup over the collection cup. Now do the same on the other side.

  • If necessary, adjust the size of the funnel using a breast shell insert or a different size of breast shell (see also section 7).

  • The collection cup should not be too snug in the bra. Loosen the bra straps or use a bra strap extension to ensure that the collection cup is positioned comfortably and effectively. If the fit is too snug, there is a risk that the breast will not be able to be fully drained or that the collection cup will tilt towards the body and the milk will not be able to flow through, which would result in a leak.ardo-Alyssa-Hands-Free-Double-Pumpset-fig-19

  • Bra tips
Choose a bra made of a stretchy material. The collection cups will usually fit into a breastfeeding bra better than into a normal bra. Some women who are breastfeeding find that a bustier is better than a bra.

  • On the size of the collection cups
The amount of milk expressed varies from woman to woman. Our collection cups collect even larger amounts of up to 6 oz (180 ml) breast milk.

Expressing
Switch the breastpump on. (For using the breastpump, please read the instructions for use provided.)

Finishing expressing

  • When you have finished expressing, lean slightly forward while the pump is still running. This will ensure that all of the milk runs out of the funnel and into the collection cup.
  • Switch the breast pump off.

Removing collection cups from the bra
Carefully remove the collection cups from the bra and put them down level. Then carefully disconnect the tubes from the collection cups by holding the membrane cap (f) fi rmly.

Decanting the breast milk
Do not keep the expressed breast milk in the collection cups, instead decant the milk through the opening in the collection cup into a provided milk bottle (e.g. Ardo Bottle Set) or a milk bag (e.g. Ardo Easy Store). Information on correct storage of expressed breast milk can be found in section 8.

Cleaning
Clean the fully dismantled collection cups after every use and disinfect them once per day in accordance with section 5.

The right size of breast shell

  • You will be able to express successfully if you have the right breast shell. If the breast shell is too big or too small, this may cause sore nipples and may be painful. You should therefore use the right breast shell size for you or an appropriate insert.
  • The size is right if:
    • there is around 2 mm space free around the nipple.
    • the nipple moves freely in the funnel during expressing and can follow the rhythmic movements of the pump.
    • there is no areolar tissue in the funnel.
    • the milk flows and the breast feels soft all over after expressing.
  • If your nipple rubs uncomfortably on the inside of the funnel, use a larger breast shell. If the areola is also sucked into the funnel, use a smaller breast shell insert.ardo-Alyssa-Hands-Free-Double-Pumpset-fig-24
  • Breast shells in size 24 mm and breast shell inserts in size 19 mm are included with the pumpset. Breast shells in size 27 mm and breast shell inserts in size 17 mm are also available for this pumpset (we reserve the right to change this).

Storing breast milk

Keep the breast milk in a suitable container, for example a milk bottle (including the Ardo Bottle Set) or a milk bag (including the Ardo Easy Store). Recommended storage time:

  • at room temperature: 3–4 hours at 16–29°C (60–85°F);
  • in the refrigerator: 3 days at ≤4°C (39°F);
  • in the freezer compartment: 6 months to 1 year at <-17°C (0°F)

Possible problems and troubleshooting

  • Weak or no vacuum:
    • Ensure that the collection cups are put together correctly, in particular that the valves are inserted in the correct orientation (arrows must match up) and that the lips of the valves close.
    • Check if the valves are cracked or stuck together.
    • Ensure that the individual parts of the collection cups are not damaged.
    • Ensure that the tube connector forms a tight seal.
  • Pain when pumping:
    • Ensure that the nipple is in the middle of the funnel.
    • Check that the breast shell size is right for your nipples.
    • Check that the vacuum intensity is not set too high.
    • Contact a professional for help.
If you have problems with breastfeeding, please contact your midwife, lactation consultant or a medical specialist.
