SPECIFIC INFORMATION
INSTRUCTIONS FOR USE
Summary
C.A.M.P. Enigma is a device designed to connect two elements between each
other, which need freedom of movement. Enigma (tab.A) is a device certified
according to the PPE-R/11.135 V2 methodology and the relevant points of EN
795:2012 and EN 354:2010. Enigma is also tested according to the American
ANSI/ASSP Z359.12-2019 standard. ENIGMA 3 LOCK and ENIGMA 3 LOCK Double (Tab.
A) are connectors certified according standards EN 362:2004 and EN 12275:2013,
and method PPE-R/11.135 V2. Class A corresponds to the anchor connectors
intended to be linked directly to an anchor. Class T corresponds to the
termination connectors intended to allow a direction of load predetermined
along the major axis. By way of non-exhaustive example, some applications are:
creation of anchorages with self-orientable points, insertion in work-at-
height and rescue systems for increased freedom of movements and preventing of
twisting ropes and lanyards. This product is intended for use to protect and
prevent against the risk of falling from a height in rescue operations, in
work at a height, in the practice of mountaineering, rock-climbing and other
vertical sports that use similar techniques.
Use
- Connect the device to the other system components following one of the methods below.
- CONNECTION TO THE ATTACHMENT WITH CONNECTORS (fig.1): insert the connector into the attachment ring [1]. Use EN 362 class B or ANSI Z359.12 connectors for industrial use or EN 12275 for mountaineering use; in the case of permanent connections, select by preference quick links (Class Q). Avoid transverse stresses on the connectors (fig.1b).
- DIRECT CONNECTION TO THE ATTACHMENT RING (fig.t2): compatible equipment can be connected directly to the attachment rings [1] without using connectors. Examples of connectable equipment are: descenders, ascenders, pulleys, metal rings, webbing loops, stitched ropes, lanyards, harnesses’ attachment points, anchors. The connected equipment must be free of burrs and/or sharp edges. Check that the connected equipment can rotate freely into the attachment ring [1]. For installation, follow the instructions reported in fig.2 (scan the QR code for video instructions). The nut [4] can be opened and closed by means of either the key [5] or any compatible tool (screwdriver, coin). Always check the nut [5] is completely closed before use, no specific torque is required.
- CONNECTION TO THE ATTACHMENT RING WITH HITCHES (fig.3): rope, webbing, loops can be knotted directly into the attachment rings [1]. Check that hitches are allowed on the equipment to be connected.
- CONNECTION WITH 3 LOCK CONNECTORS (Fig. 4): The correct connection to the connector is shown in Fig. 4. Notice: some situations can reduce the connector’s strength (fig. 7). Any positioning that stresses the connector lever is hazardous (Fig. 8).
- Before loading the system, always check that all components are correctly assembled and positioned in the right direction. For the preferential use (fig.5a), the working load limit (WLL) is 500 kg (~5 kN) and the breaking load (MBL) is 23 kN. In the event the load is applied on an attachment ring [1] within 120°, the tensile strength is 21 kN (Fig. 5b). Breaking load when loaded transversely (minor axis) is 19 kN (MBL) with 2.5 kN of working load limit (WLL)(fig.5c). Prevent Enigma from hitting uneven surfaces or sharp edges that could compromise its strength. (fig.6). If used in a fall arrest system, the system must limit the peak force below 6 kN. This force is transmitted to the structure; therefore, the minimum strength of the supporting surface must be checked (12 kN for metal anchors or 18 kN for fabric anchors) in addition to the direction of application of the force. Do not stay above the anchor point: risk of failure/injuries in case of fall. Take measures to avoid pendulum. Enigma should not be used alone as a fall arrest component. Enigma can be used in a fall-arrest system if combined with an EN 335 energy absorber, an EN 354 lanyard and EN 362 connectors. In this case the maximum length of the string- Enigma-absorber-connector system must never exceed 2 m and must be connected to the attachment element (A) of a EN 361 full body harness. The length of the device should be taken into account when used in any fall arrest system, as it will influence the length of a fall. Use adequate rescue equipment and provide adequate training for the work crew so that they can quickly rescue the injured person to minimise the suspension trauma effects.
CHECKING AND MAINTENANCE
Check the correct rotation of the swivel balls [2] at each use in case of dirt, clean with a blast of compressed air and/or immerse in fresh water and subsequently dry in a ventilated environment. After cleaning, the mechanism can be lubricated. A carabiner loses half of its resistance when the gate is open (tab.A). It is recommended to check that the gate is properly working before use; do not use the carabiner in case it occurs: MARKING
- if the gate does not come back properly when closing. During the inspection, the gate should be released slowly in order to nullify the spring action.
- wrong or incomplete functioning of the gate closing system. For manually closing of the Locking device, it has to be screwed and unscrewed completely. Never use a carabiner if it is just partially blocked. The automatic closing must be carried out completely, without any external aid. In certain environments, contaminants (mud, sand, paint, ice, dirty water, etc.) can prevent the automatic locking system from working.
After cleaning, lubricate the mechanism with a silicone-based lubricant. It is recommended that the equipment be cleaned and lubricated after each use in marine environments. If the defect is still present after lubricating, the device must be removed from service.
PERIODIC INSPECTION
The safety of users depends upon the continued efficiency and durability of the
equipment. In addition to normal visual inspection prior to, during, and after
use, this product must be inspected by a competent person at least once every
12 months. This frequency should be increased if the equipment is used by
multiple individuals or if subject to particularly harsh wear. The date of
first use and of all inspections must be recorded on the product’s lifesheet.
Keep all inspection and reference documentation for the entire life of the
product. Do not remove or tamper with the product labeling. Remove the product
from service
if its entire history is unknown and/or if the records are illegible. In case
of one of the following defects are present, the product should be withdrawn
from service immediately:
- excessive wear with a depth estimated to be greater than 1 mm;
- creation of space between the pivoting pins [1a] and the swivelling body [2];
- damage of the thread of the rotation axis [2c] which does not allow to screw the nut [4];
- presence of cracks;
- corrosion that seriously alters the surface state of the metal (it does not disappear after a slight rubbing with sandpaper);
- presence of permanent deformations;
- total locking of the rotation function, which cannot be solved through cleaning and lubrication.
- play or exit of the rivet from the gate
- incorrect placement of the gate on the carabiner body
- play or exit of the rotation axis of the gate
If the component or one of its parts shows signs of wear or defects, it must be replaced, even before the end of its expected lifetime. Attention: colors change can indicate chemical contamination. It must be replaced if there is any doubt about its condition. Each product in the safety system can be damaged during a fall and must be always inspected before use it again. Do not continue to use a product after a major fall because a damage may have occurred, even no external signs are visible.
LIFETIME
The lifetime of the product is unlimited, unless any defect appears and
provided that periodic inspections are made at least once every 12 months from
the date the product is first used and the results are recorded in the life
sheet of the product. The following factors can reduce the lifetime of the
product: intense use, damage to components of the product, contact with
chemical substances, high temperatures, tears and abrasions, violent impacts,
failure to maintain as recommended. When suspect that the product is no more
safety and reliable, please contact C.A.M.P. SpA or the distributor.
DISPOSAL
When the product reaches its end-of-life, it is important that it be disposed
of correctly. We recommend separating it into its basic materials (metal
parts, fabric and plastic) with the assistance of suitable instruments (if
necessary). The waste management procedure may vary based on your location. To
manage the product (and its packaging) in the most suitable manner at end-of-
life, check current regulations and instructions from the responsible local
authorities.
