PERFECT ESPRESSO

TIPS FOR BREWING THE PERFECT ESPRESSO

  • Keep the filter clean.
    • Before dosing coffee into your filter, ensure that it is clean and free of any residual moisture or grounds. These can negatively affect the taste of your espresso, making it over-extracted and bitter.
  • Always preheat your equipment.
    • Before pressing the power button to start preheating, make sure the knob is in the “COFFEE” position. Espresso is a small volume of liquid and quickly loses heat, particularly when it comes into contact with a cold surface.
    • Preheat the filter anddemitasse cups using hot water to avoid this.
  • Suggest using pure or distilled water.
    • The quality of water you use affects the taste of your espresso. Always use filtered or bottled distilled water to improve the flavour and keep the espresso machine’s plumbing clean.
  • Buy freshly roasted beans.
    • For the best taste, buy beans roasted within the past two weeks. Coffee becomes less flavorful and harder to achieve a dense crema layer after two weeks.
    • Use 100% Arabica beans for optimal results. Robusta is strong but of poorer quality and harsher flavour.
    • If buying pre-ground coffee, avoid purchasing more than what you can drink in a week. Invest in a good coffee storage container and store it in a cool, dark place.
  • Grind size matters.
    • Dial in your grind size for great shots. A coarse grind leads to watery and astringent espresso, while a fine grind results in an intensely bitter brew.
  • Use gram scales to weigh your dose.
    • Measuring coffee by weight ensures that you use the same amount every time. For a single shot, use 7 to 9 grams, and for a double shot, use 13 to 15 grams.
  • Extraction time should be 25-30 seconds.
    • Espresso is made by forcing hot water (not boiling water) under pressure through a “puck” of finely ground coffee.
    • Finer grinds lead to denser pucks and more pressure to force water through.
    • The pressure used should push the water through in 25-30 seconds; if it takes longer, the espresso will be bitter.
  • Tamp the coffee grind evenly.
    • Use the tamping tool to tamp the coffee evenly in the filter, using an even motion.
    • Ensure that the tamped coffee is level and compacted, and brush off any loose grounds.
    • For consistent tamping, invest in a calibrated tamper if your budget allows.
