RJC-50-PREM/RJC-75-PREM Convertible Jet Pump
This pump is designed to be used with shallow wells down to 25 feet (7.6 m) and deep wells down to 90 feet (27.4 m), lower depths at high altitudes. The pump includes an injector kit, which consists of a cast iron injector assembly that has a nozzle and venturi threaded into it. This injector assembly is set up for shallow good use. Additional ventures are included for deep well applications. Some models also include a deep well nozzle. The venturi and nozzle are designed specifically for certain depths to optimize performance. The injector assembly should always be replaced at the same time the pump is replaced.

SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS

This equipment should be installed and serviced by technically qualified personnel who are familiar with the correct selection and use of appropriate tools, equipment, and procedures. Failure to comply with national and local electrical and plumbing codes and within Red Lion recommendations may result in elec-trical shock or fire hazard, unsatisfactory performance, or equipment failure. Failure to follow installation or operation procedures and all applicable codes may result in the following hazards:

DANGER
Risk of death, personal injury, or property damage due to explosion, fire, or electric shock.

  • Do not use in explosive atmospheres or hazardous locations as classified by the NEC, ANSI/NFPA70.
  • Do not handle a pump or pump motor with wet hands or when standing on a wet surface or in water until the unit is unplugged or electrically disconnected.
  • Do not use to pump flammable, combustible, or explosive fluids such as gasoline, fuel oil, kerosene, etc.
  • When a pump is in its application, do not touch the motor, pipes, or water until the unit is unplugged or electrically disconnected.
  • If the power disconnect is out of sight, lock it in the open position and tag it to prevent unexpected application of power.
  • If the disconnect panel is not accessible in an emergency, contact the power company to stop service.

WARNING
High voltages and system pressure capable of causing severe injury or death are present in this unit.

  • To reduce the risk of electrical shock, disconnect the power before working on or around the system. More than one disconnect switch may be required to de-energize the equipment before servicing.
  • Release all system pressure before installation, service, relocation, or maintenance.
  • Be certain that this pump is connected to a circuit equipped with a ground fault circuit interrupter (GFCI) device if required by code.
  • Wire pump system for correct voltages. This pump has a dual voltage motor (115/230 V). The voltage on the pump must match the voltage from the power source. Incorrect wiring may cause a fire.
  • Check local electrical and building codes before installation. The installation must be by their regulations as well as the most recent National Electrical Code (NEC), Occupational Safety and Health Act (OSHA), and Canadian Elec-trical Code (CEC).
  • The motor must be grounded and the terminal cover in place to reduce shock hazards.
  • Do not remove the priming plug, casing, or suction or discharge fittings when the pump is hot. Hot water or vapour inside could be pressurized and could cause severe burns.
  • Do not use this pump for pumping sea water, beverages, acids, chemical solutions, or any other liquid that promotes corrosion as this can result in damage to the pump.
  • This pump has not been investigated for use in swimming pools or marine areas.
  • Always use a properly selected and installed pressure relief valve to prevent damage and injury from over-pressurization of the system when required by local codes.

CAUTION
Risk of bodily injury, electric shock, or equipment damage.

  • This equipment must not be used by children or persons with reduced physical, sensory or mental abilities, or lacking in experience and expertise unless supervised or instructed. Children may not use the equipment, nor may they play with the unit or in the immediate vicinity.
  • Equipment can start automatically. Always unplug the pump power cord and disconnect the electrical power before servicing the pump or control.
  • Do not run the pump dry. If runs dry, the surface temperature of the pump will rise to a high temperature that could cause skin burns if touched and will cause serious damage to the pump.
  • Operation of this equipment requires detailed installation and operation instructions provided in this manual for use with this product. Read the entire manual before starting installation and operation. The end User should receive and retain the manual for future use.
  • Do not wear loose clothing, jewellery, or anything that may be caught in the rotating parts. Tie up long hair and remove jewellery.
  • Wear safety glasses while installing or performing maintenance on the pump.
  • Keep safety labels clean and in good condition.
  • This pump has been evaluated for use with water only.
  • The pump should only be used with liquids compatible with pump component materials. If the pump is used with liquids incompatible with the pump components, the liquid can cause failure to the electrical insulation system resulting in elec-trical shock.
  • The pump motor is equipped with an automatic resetting thermal protector and may restart unexpectedly. Thermal Protector tripping indicates motor overloading or overheating.

  • Periodically inspect pump and system components. Regularly check piping for weakness or wear, making certain that all connections are secure.

Electrical Connections

WARNING
Risk of severe injury or death by electrical shock, or damage to system.

  • Always disconnect the electrical power before touching the pump.
  • A ground fault circuit interrupter (GFCI) is required.
  • If the power cord is damaged, it must only be replaced by qualified personnel.
  • Use copper conductors only.

Changing the Voltage
This pump comes with a dual voltage motor (115/230 V) and is factory set for 230 V. Ensure the voltage indicator matches the voltage at the power source. Do not connect to a voltage other than that shown.

IMPORTANT:
Ensure the motor is grounded and the motor terminal cover is in place.

  1. Disconnect the power supply to the pump.

  2. Remove the cover from the motor terminal box.

  3. Press the black voltage change device onto both terminals with the white arrow directly aligned with the correct voltage on the terminal board.
    IMPORTANT: Do not move the white lead wires on L1 and L2.

  4. Reassemble the terminal box cover.

Wiring the Pump

  1. Employ an electrician to do the wiring.

  2. Use a separate circuit from the distribution panel with properly sized protection to power the pump.

  3. Install a properly fused disconnect switch in the line.

    • Use the correct gauge of cable to carry the load.
      IMPORTANT: Undersized wire between the motor and the power source will adversely limit the starting and load-carrying abilities of the motor.
  4. Wire the connections.

    • Connect the power lines to the pressure switch terminals marked L1 and L2.
    • Very long leads will require a larger cable.
    • For added safety, ensure the pump and motor are grounded to the ground in the distribution panel or to the well casing, if metal.
  5. For driven wells, water levels may be too low to pump at times. Employ an electrician to replace the pressure switch with a low-pressure cut-off switch to prevent pump damage.

Physical Installation

Well Installation
For pumping depths less than 25 feet, follow a shallow well set-up. For pumping depths of 20-90 feet, implement a deep well set-up. Refer to “Typical Installations”.

Shallow Well

  1. Place the red rubber gasket over the venturi.
    • Make sure the hole sizes match.
  2. Attach the injector assembly to the front of the pump casing, using the provided washers and bolts.
    • Be sure the “bottom” label is at the bottom of the pump.

NOTE: Any extra venturis and nozzles in the injector kit are not needed for this application.

Driven Wells
Refer to “Typical Installations”.

  1. Drive the well point into the ground.
    • Refer to the well-point manufacturer’s instructions.
    • Ensure the well point is deep enough to bore through the water-bearing formation below the water table but does not exceed 25 feet (7.6 m) of depth.
    • If an individual wellpoint does not supply enough water, consider a multi-point installation.
  2. Install enough piping to reach the water source and leave 1 foot (30 cm) of protruding pipe.
    • The rise pipe should be galvanized in approximately 5 feet (1.5 m) sections.
  3. Attach a 1¼-inch 90° elbow to the end of each pipe.
  4. Attach a 1¼-inch check valve to the 1¼-inch galvanized nipple.
  5. Attach a 1¼-inch male PVC adapter to the 1¼-inch check valve.

Drilled Wells

  1. Find the total length needed for 1¼-inch PVC pipe and coupling(s).

    • Measure the distance from the top to the bottom of the well and subtract 5 feet.
  2. Assemble the foot valve, 1¼-inch male PVC adapter, and well piping.
    IMPORTANT: Ensure any burrs or shavings from cutting the pipes are completely removed to prevent damage to the pump.

  3. Firmly clamp the unfinished pipe end with a pipe clamp 1 foot (30 cm) from the top of the pipe.

  4. Lower the foot valve end of the piping assembly into the well.

  5. Install the well seal and a well vent tube.

    • Ensure the foot valve is suspended 4 feet (1.2 m) from the well bottom.
    • The 1¼-inch pipe should extend 1 foot (30 cm) above the seal.
    • The 1-inch pipe should extend 10 inches (25 cm) above the seal.
  6. Attach a 1¼-inch 90° elbow to the end of each pipe.

Deep Well

  1. Install a 1¼-inch foot valve to a 1¼-inch close nipple, then attach the nipple to the bottom of the injector assembly.

    • The bottom of the injector assembly is the end with a single hole.
  2. Thread a 1-inch x 6-inch NPT into the smaller hole of the injector assembly.

  3. Thread a 1¼-inch male PVC adapter over the venturi tube and into the larger hole of the injector assembly.

  4. Find the total length needed for 1 ¼- and 1-inch PVC pipe and couplings.

    • Measure the distance from the top to the bottom of the well and subtract 5 feet.
  5. Assemble the 1 ¼- and 1-inch PVC pipes and couplings.

    • The 1-inch PVC pipe should be cut two inches shorter than the 1¼-inch pipe.
      IMPORTANT: Ensure any burrs or shavings from cutting the pipes are completely removed to prevent damage to the pump.
  6. Firmly clamp the unfinished pipe end with a pipe clamp 1 foot (30 cm) from the top of the pipe.

  7. Lower the foot valve end of the piping assembly into the well.

  8. Install the well seal and a well vent tube.

    • Ensure the foot valve is suspended 4 feet (1.2 m) from the well bottom.
    • The 1 ¼- inch pipe should extend 1 foot (30 cm) above the seal.
    • The 1-inch pipe should extend 10 inches (25 cm) above the seal.
  9. Attach a 90° elbow to the end of each pipe.

Pump Location

  • Install the pump indoors in a clean, dry, and ventilated location shielded from direct sun and precipitation.
  • Provide adequate room for future servicing, protection from freezing temperatures, flooding, and equipment drainage.
  • Bolt unit down evenly on a good foundation, preferably concrete, to prevent unnecessary stresses from pump movement.
  • Install as close as possible to the water source to minimize suction piping length.
  • Keep the operating area as dry as possible.
Piping Connections

Well Piping to Pump

  1. Install a pressure gauge into the ½-inch NPT hole on the front of the casing, opposite the pressure switch.
    IMPORTANT: For driven wells, have an electrician replace the pressure switch with a low-pressure cut-off.

    • A pressure gauge is not necessary for all applications. Install if included or desired.
  2. Attach a 1¼-inch male PVC adapter to the top hole in the pump casing.

    • IMPORTANT: Do not over-tighten.
  3. Install piping between the pump and the well piping.

Pump to Tank and Service Line

WARNING
Risk of bodily injury, property damage, or damage to the system by pressurized fluids.

  • Do not install this product if the incoming water pressure is greater than 75 psi. Serious damage to plumbing can occur.
  • A pressure relief valve (not included) rated to handle full pump flow at 75 psi should be installed in the system to prevent personal injury or property damage.

NOTICE
Risk of damage to pump or other equipment.

  • Do not apply power to the system until the pump is primed. Do not run the pump dry, which can cause overheating and damage the impeller and seals. This will void the warranty.
  • Do not use open-style wrenches to loosen plugs. Plugs may become damaged and difficult to remove.
  • Red Lion is not responsible for personal injury or property damage due to improper installation.
  1. Turn off the main water supply and the power at the main breaker.

  2. Open a nearby faucet to release the water pressure in the system. Once all water and pressure is released, turn off the faucet.

  3. Modify the existing plumbing as required to allow for installation of the pump system. IMPORTANT: Never install a check valve between the pump and the tank.

    • The pump suction is 1¼ inch FNPT and the discharge is 1 inch FNPT fittings. Depending on the size of the piping, adapters may need to be installed.
    • Seal and tighten the threads of the suction and discharge openings on the pump with PTFE tape or thread compound. Do not over-tighten the connections as this could crack the fittings.
    • Make sure all joints are airtight as even a pinhole can prevent proper operation of the pump.
    • Ensure the piping is as short and direct as possible.
    • Refer to “Typical Installations” for suggested routings.
      IMPORTANT: Ensure any burrs or shavings from cutting the pipes are completely removed to prevent damage to the pump.
  4. Install a pressure relief valve near the discharge rated to handle pump flow at 75 psi.

    • Locate the relief valve near the discharge of the pump and in an area with adequate drainage.
    • Orient the relief valve so that the valve will not spray toward the pump or other electrical devices.
      IMPORTANT: For well-point installations, also attach a restrictive valve before the tank.
  5. Add piping and coupling to join up to the service line.
    IMPORTANT: Ensure the friction loss will never exceed 20 feet (6 m) of head.

  6. For systems with a tank, make sure the pre-charge pressure of the tank is 28 psi, as this pump’s pre-charge pressure (or the pressure at which the pump will start) is 30 psi.

  7. Add unions and valves to allow system service without disabling the complete water supply.

OPERATION

NOTICE
Risk of damage to pump or other equipment.

  • Pumping sand or other abrasives can damage the pump and void the warranty.
  • If the pump is run dry, it may damage the MP and void the warranty.
Priming with an In-line Check Valve
  1. Open the discharge valve on the service line and nearby tap to monitor the water flow.
  2. Remove the vent and priming plugs with a wrench.
  3. Fully open the control valve.
  4. Pour approximately 1 quart (1 litre) of clean water for every 3 feet (1 m) of the suction line through the priming plug opening until water flows out of the vent hole.
  5. Insert and hand-tighten the vent plug.
  6. Fill the pump until water flows out of the priming hole.
  7. Insert and hand-tighten the priming plug.
  8. Start the pump.
    • If a tap is visible, you may see a short discharge of water for about 5 to 10 seconds.
  9. Run the pump for 2 minutes. Shut off.
  10. Repeat steps 2 – 9 for every 5 feet (1.5 m) of the suction line until the water is pumping continuously.
    • Priming will be repeated about 2 – 6 times.
    • If the pump does not draw water within 8 tries, shut it off and check the suction line for leaks.
  11. Close the control valve slowly until the pump delivers maximum capacity as observed from an open tap nearest the pump.
  12. Firmly tighten the vent and priming plugs with a wrench.
Priming with a Foot Valve
  1. Open the discharge valve on the service line and nearby tap to monitor the water flow.

  2. Remove the vent and priming plugs with a wrench.

  3. Pour approximately 1 quart (1 litlitref clean water for every 3 feet (1 m) of such tion line through the priming plug opening until water flows out of the vent hole.
    NOTE: If the suction line does not fill, follow the directions for an in- line check valve.

  4. Insert and hand-tighten the vent plug.

  5. Fill the pump until water flows out of the priming hole.

  6. Insert and hand-tighten the priming plug.

  7. Start the pump and ensure it pumps continuously.

    • If the pump is primed correctly, it should start pumping water immediately.
    • If water does not continuously pump within 2 minutes, repeat steps 3 – 7.
    • If a second priming does not give a continuous flow, stop the pump and check the suction line for leaks.
  8. Close the control valve slowly until the pump delivers maximum capacity as observed from an open tap nearest the pump.

  9. Firmly tighten the vent and priming plugs with a wrench.

Priming for a Double Pipe Installation
  1. Open the discharge valve on the service line and nearby tap to monitor the water flow.
  2. Remove the vent and priming plugs with a wrench.
  3. Pour approximately 2 quarts (2 litres) of clean water for every 3 feet (1 m) of the suction line through the priming plug opening until water flows out of the vent hole.
  4. Insert and hand-tighten the vent plug.
  5. Fill the pump until water flows out of the priming hole.
  6. Insert and hand-tighten the priming plug.
  7. Close the control valve.
  8. Start the pump.
    • If the pump is primed correctly, it should start pumping water immediately.
  9. Slowly open the control valve until the pump delivers maximum capacity.
    • Observe the water flow from the nearest open tap.
  10. Observe the pressure gauge on the pump case and adjust the control valve until flow and pressure are stabilized and the gauge reads approximately 25 psi.
    • Water should be pumping continuously.
  11. Firmly tighten the vent and priming plugs with a wrench.

MAINTENANCE

WARNING
Risk of severe injury or death by electrical shock or pressurized fluids.

  • Always unplug the power cord in addition to removing the fuse or shutting off the circuit breaker before working on the pump or control.
  • Relieve system pressure before service.
  • This product should be serviced by qualified electrical or plumbing personnel only.
  • PuThe pumpay become hot during operation. Allow the MP to cool before servicing.

Periodic Maintenance
Inspect the pump monthly.

  1. Make sure the pump is still securely bolted to the foundation.
    NOTE: The pump can be maintained and inspected without removing the flow control device.

  2. Ensure that there is adequate clearance from combustible materials, shelving, cabinets, leaves, debris, etc.

  3. Ensure the motor is securely wired into a proper GFCI-protected circuit.

    • The pump should shut off when the test switch is pressed during operation.
    • Reset the GFCI by pressing the reset switch.
  4. Periodically inspect the system for leaks and performance.

    • Replace seals or impeller as required. Refer to “Replacing Mechanical Seals”.
    • When replacing the pump, always replace the injector assembly.
  5. Clean the exterior of the pump with a solution of vinegar and water, if needed.

Draining
Drain the system if it will be subjected to temperatures below 32 °F (0 °C) or if maintenance is to be performed.

  1. Disconnect power from the system.
  2. Open a tap in the water system to release the pressure.
  3. Remove the drain and priming plugs from the pump casing.
  4. Remove the pressure tank drain plug (if applicable).
  5. Allow ample time for the system to drain before reinstalling the plugs.

Replacing Mechanical Seals

NOTICE
Risk of damage to pump or other property.

  • Only qualified persons should perform maintenance on electrical or mechanical devices.
  • Care must be taken not to damage the motor fan or cover.
  • Do not use petroleum-based cleaners or lubricants.
  • Care must be taken not to contaminate the seal faces.
Disassembly
  1. Disconnect the pump from the power source.
  2. Open a tap in the water system to release the pressure.
  3. Remove the drain (9) and prime plugs to allow the pump to drain.
  4. Disconnect the tubing leading to the pressure switch.
  5. Remove the bolts (1) and casing (2).
  6. Pry the diffuser (3) out of the casing, using two slotted screwdrivers for leverage.
  7. Remove the cap (4) and insert a screwdriver to prevent the shaft from turning.
  8. Unscrew the impeller (5).
    • The impeller has a right-hand thread.
    • If the impeller cannot be turned by hand, insert a flat object into the impeller vane.
  9. Slip the rotating seal (6) of the shaft.
  10. Remove the seal plate (7).
  11. Remove the ceramic seal seat (8) from the seal plate.
  12. Inspect all parts and replace any that are worn or damaged.

Reassembly

  1. Clean all parts thoroughly with dish soap and water before assembling, including the rubber cap on the ceramic seal (8).
    NOTE: If the pump remains out of service longer than one week, the components must be installed dry and without lubrication.

  2. Push the ceramic seal into the adapter with the smooth surface of the seal facing outwards.

    • Wear gloves to avoid contaminating the seal face.
  3. Install the seal plate (7) on the motor.

  4. Lubricate the rotating seal (6) with soapy water and slip it onto the shaft with the carbon ring towards the ceramic seal.

  5. Replace the impeller (5) and the diffuser (3).

  6. Replace the casing (2), making sure that the gasket is not damaged and is in place.

  7. Reconnect the tubes to the casing and pressure switch.

  8. Replace the drain and fill the plugs.

  9. Refer to “Operation” 8 to start the pump.

Troubleshooting
