THANK YOU!
We are pleased that you have chosen to buy our product and thank you for placing your trust in our company! You have made a good decision. This household smoke alarm has been developed and manufactured with the utmost care, so that you can be made aware of a fire risk in your home in due time. To achieve optimum unit performance, please read through and observe these operating instructions in full.
COMMISSIONING
First of all, remove any activation safeguards (e.g. a cotter pin) and make sure that the activation safeguard does not get into the device! Then press the device’s activation button (Fig. 1, I.) which is shown in the picture on page 15. After the button has been pushed in, it must be flush with the unit’s housing. If the smoke alarm has been activated successfully, a brief test tone sounds to confirm activation. This test tone will also sound when you press the test and stop button (Fig. 1, IV) to verify that the unit is operating correctly.
FUNCTION
The heat alarm function is activated under the following conditions:
- When the temperature is over 40°C and rises by more than 4°C in 80 seconds
- If the temperature exceeds 60°C for more than 8 seconds
- Heat alarm tone: single beep, once a second
- Smoke alarm tone: double beep, once a second
CHOOSING A LOCATION
As a minimum requirement RM), smoke alarms should be installed in all bedrooms, children’s rooms and corridors that function as escape routes, only in the middle of the ceiling (no wall mounting). Choose the highest point to install the unit, ensuring that it is positioned at least 50 cm away from surrounding walls, furniture and lamps. To provide optimum protection RM for your home, install units in all the other rooms and in the stairwells. The unit is also suitable for use in the kitchen (the most com-mon location for household fires). In most cases, there is no need to install a smoke alarm in washrooms (bathrooms, toilets, etc.) such rooms represent a low fire risk. Please observe the diagrams included in these instructions. The unit can detect a fire early on on the basis of the rising smoke and the connected temperature increase in the temperature in the room. In the event of fire, a loud alarm tone sounds as a warning. If you are sure that there is no genuine need to evac- use the building, you can temporarily deactivate the alarm tone (for roughly 10 minutes) or disable the tone before it is activated by gently pressing the unit’s test and stop button (IV). In such a case, it is advisable to venti- late the affected rooms well to prevent the alarm from being activated a second time.
BATTERY FAULT WARNING
If a single brief signalling tone (“beep”) sounds roughly every 90 seconds, the battery capacity is low. If a double brief signalling tone (“beep-beep”) sounds roughly every 90 seconds, the unit is no longer able to filter out imperfections in the detection optics. Both signalling tones can be temporarily deactivated (for 24 hours) by pressing the test and stop button (IV). If the smoke alarm is emitting either of the above-described signalling tones, the unit will continue to function for a maximum of 60 days and needs to be replaced before this 60-day period has expired!
INSTALLATION
The RM 20 is hold in place by a
magnetic mount. This mount can
be fastened to the ceiling in two
different ways, as described below.
Please note that only one side of the
magnet can attract the unit
magnetically.
ADHESIVE MOUNTING
To mount the device using adhesion, only the adhesive included with the product may be used! The assembly site must be fixed, dry and free of grease, dust and loose paintwork etc. As shown in (Fig. 3), remove the information sticker and the protective film from the applied adhesive and press the magnet carrying frame to the assembly position firmly for approx. 10 seconds. Then you can place the device on the magnet carrying frame (Fig. 1, III.). The adhesive bond will reach its ultimate strength after approx. 72 hours.
DRILLING
Drill a hole into the installation surface with a 6 mm drill bit and insert the supplied 6 mm wall plug into the hole. Guide the supplied 5 mm countersunk head screw through the underside of the magnetic mount (Fig. 4) pictured below so that the screw with be flush with the magnetic mount when it has been screwed into the wall plug. Push the screw through the drilled hole. The screw must be fully screwed into the recess provided on the magnetic mount to ensure that the unit is held securely. Take care not to fasten the screw too tightly as this could deform/distort the magnetic mount.
GENERAL SAFETY INFORMATION
Although smoke alarms can help you to detect a fire early on, they cannot extinguish a fire, prevent a fire from occurring or alarm the fire brigade. In the event of fire fume-related risk, smoke alarms emit a loud alarm tone to warn you of this risk. Although the utmost care is taken during the manufacture of the smoke alarm, a malfunction may occur and a unit may not be able to warn you of a fire in due time, or may not be able to provide a warning at all. The standard precautions for dealing with fire, flammable materials and technical devices must be observed at all times. The unit is a closed system. Any form of tampering with the unit’s interior will result in the loss of any existing warranty and make it impossible for the unit to be implemented in accordance with its intended use. Never open the unit as this can place you at risk of injury. Replacing the battery is not necessary and is not technically possible. Please protect the unit from the following, particularly during renovation work (but also in general): moisture, cold, heat, fine dust, grease vapours, nicotine and paint fumes, adhesives, dirt and coating materials such as wall paint. In the event of renovation, construction or grinding work, detach the smoke alarm from the magnetic mount by gently pulling it in a downwards direction and keep it in a protected place. After the work has been completed, remember to replace the smoke alarm (by clicking into place the magnetic mount.
IMPORTANT NOTE:
The smoke alarm is only able to provide a warning, and potentially save lives, if it is located in its intend- ed installation position, is free from dirt and damage and is activated.
TESTING AND MAINTENANCE
The smoke detector automatically checks that it is operating correctly once a minute. It also automatically readjusts the sensitivity of its detection optics to suit its environmental conditions.
The unit gives an early warning if its energy capacity is low or if the detection optics have become so full of imperfections that readjustment is no longer possible. This gives you sufficient time to replace the smoke alarm with a new unit. Please ensure that the air inlets located around the edge of the smoke alarm are never blocked by dust, dirt, paint of adhesive tape. You should check that the unit is functional on a regular basis, at least once a month, by pressing the test and stop button (Fig. 5) to activate a test alarm. Check that the unit is free from damage, that it is held tightly in
place and that the smoke inlet ribs (Il) are completely free from any foreign bodies. Useful information on regularmaintenanceandchoosinganopti- mum location for installation can be found in the application standard for smoke alarms, DIN 14676.
EQUIPMENT LIFE
At least every 12 years replace the smoke detector.
POSSIBLE CAUSES FOR A FALSE ALARM
- Very intense cooking, water and/or roasting vapours, air freshener, perfume or insecticide sprays, pollen, fine dust, dust from con- struction or grinding work have entered the unit.
- The smoke alarm is being affected by extreme temperature fluctuate- tions or very strong electromag netic radiation in immediate proxi- mity to the unit.
- An alarm can only be activated by cigarette smoke if the smoke enters the unit directly or in very high concentrations. The unit should be protected from the above-mentioned environmental conditions to prevent a false alarm.
- One or more very small insects or other small organisms have broken through the unit’s insect barriers. This can be rectified by carefully cleaning the unit with a vacuum cleaner.
Always ensure that rooms are well ventilated when you are cooking food or when large amounts of water vapour are being produced. A false alarm can be stopped or prevented bygently pressing the test and stop button (IV) and thoroughly ventilating the affected rooms. Please notify your neighbours in the event of a false alarm, as they might otherwise mistakenly alarm the fire brigade!
