the four corners of the speaker. Make sure to turn the logo so it is
horizontal.
Attaching the Speaker to the Wall
If you prefer to hang the speaker on the wall, follow these steps:
- Attach the rubber feet to the four corners of the speaker.
- Use screws (not included) that are at least 35 mm (1-3/8 inches) long to attach the metal wall mounts (included) to the wall.
- Hang the speaker on the metal wall mounts.
- Note: The placement of the speaker on the wall can affect the bass output.
Speaker Connection
Refer to the illustration below for examples of speaker connection:
Location and Placement
When deciding on the location and placement of the speakers, consider the
following:
- Place the speakers away from the edges and corners to avoid injury if knocked or if the speaker falls over.

- We recommend using it as a center or surround speaker.
Attach the rubber feet to the speaker SB-AFC500
The speaker can be set-up either standing or lying down. Attach these rubber
feet to prevent vibration causing the speaker to move or fall over.
(See below if you would prefer to hang the speaker on the wall.)
One sheet of 4 rubber feet is included.
- Rubber feet (4 per speaker, included)
- Cloth (not included)
- Turn the logo so it is horizontal.

- Do not attach horizontally.
- As this speaker has a bass reflex port on the rear, attaching it to a wall can affect bass output.
Speaker set-up
The illustration shows examples of connection.
- Front speaker (Left)
- Center speaker SB-AFC500
- Receiver or amplifier (not included)
- Front speaker (Right) SB-AFC500
- Surround speaker (Right) SB-AFC500
- Surround speaker (Left) SB-AFC500
- Speaker cables (not included) SB-PF500
Location
The front, center, and surround speakers should be placed at approximately the
same distance from the listening position. The angles in the diagram are
approximate.
Positioning for best effect How you set up your speakers can affect the bass
and the sound field. Note the following points.
- Place speakers on flat, secure bases.
- Placing speakers too close to floors, walls, and corners can result in excessive bass.
- Cover walls and windows with thick curtain.
- Place the surround speakers on the side of or slightly behind the seating position, about one meter higher than ear level.
- Vibration may cause distortion in the picture if the center speaker is placed directly on the television. Place it on a rack or shelf.
- Place the speakers at least 5 cm (2w) from the wall as they have bass reflex ports in the rear.
Caution
Do not attempt to attach these speakers to walls using methods other than
those described in this manual.
Connections
Confirm the colors of the cords to ensure correct connection. Incorrect connection can damage the unit.
- Before making the connections, switch OFF the power to the amplifier.
- Use with an amplifier having 6 Ω impedance for these speakers.
- Be sure to connect only positive (+) wires to positive (+) terminals, and negative (–) wires to negative (–) terminals.
Connecting the cables
Before connection
Strip the outer covering from the end of the cable to a length of
approximately 15 mm (19/32w) and twist the center wire.
If using a commercially available 4-mm plug cable
Fully tighten the speaker terminal knob, and then insert the end of the plug
cable into the top of the knob.
Caution
To prevent damage to circuitry, never short-circuit positive (+) and
negative (–) speaker wires.
Notes
Speaker impedance and allowed input
Impedance | 6 W |
---|---|
Input power | 100 W (DIN) |
Caution
The only receivers or amplifiers you should connect to these speakers are
those whose rated output does not exceed the above figures.
Using a receiver or amplifier with higher ratings than listed above can cause
abnormal sounds to occur because of excessive input, damage to the receiver or
speakers, and fire. If equipment is damaged in any way or unexpected trouble
occurs during playback, unplug the system from its outlet and call a
servicenter for assistance.
Protection circuitry
These units incorporate protection circuitry to protect them from damage caused by excessive input or abnormal signals; when excess input is detected, input is automatically interrupted.
If sound is interrupted.
- Reduce the volume of the receiver (or amplifier).
- Check the sound source and connections for any problems. If there is no problem, the protection circuitry will reset in a few minutes.
After the protection circuit is reset…
Take care not to increase the receiver’s volume too high.
Excessive input
You can damage your speakers and shorten their useful life if you play sound
at high levels over extended periods.
Reduce the volume in the following cases to avoid damage :
- When playing distorted sound.
- When the speakers are receiving howling from a microphone or record player, noise from FM broadcasts, or continuous signals from an oscillator, test disc, or electronic instrument.
- When adjusting the sound quality.
- When turning the amplifier on or off.
Other notes
- If irregular coloring occurs on your television
- These speakers are designed to be used close to a television, but the picture may be affected with some televisions and set-up combinations.
- If this occurs, turn the television off for about 30 minutes. The television’s demagnetizing function should correct the problem. If it persists, move the speakers further away from the television.
- Do not touch the diaphragms.
- Doing so might cause distortion.
- Keep magnetized items away.
- Magnetized cards, bank cards, commuter passes, etc., can be damaged if allowed too near speaker magnets. Clocks may also be affected.
Avoid locations such as described below :
- In direct sunlight
- Near heating appliances or other sources of heat
- Where the humidity is high
Maintenance
Clean these units with a soft, clean, dry cloth.
Clean regularly to maintain the polished surface.
- Never use alcohol, paint thinner, or benzene to clean these units.
- Before using chemically treated cloth, read the instructions that came with the cloth carefully.
