Caring for your Hammock

Storage

  • Keep your hammock indoors when not in use and store it in a cool, dry place.
  • Direct sunlight and rain will deteriorate and reduce the lifespan of your hammock in time and the colors may run or change. Salt spray from the sea will also damage your hammock, so it is important to rinse your hammock regularly.

Folding your Hammock

  • Tie a loose knot in the end of the strings as seen in the figure to prevent tangles. Take the edge of the fabric at the middle of the hammock fold it in half, and then half again.
  • Roll-up vour hammock starting with the end strings.

Washing Instructions

  • Hammocks without a spreader bar

Hand Washing

  • Place the hammock into a sink or bathtub by holding both of the end loops. Immerse the hammock in warm water and slowly add a mild detergent, but keep the end loops out of the water.

DO NOT USE BLEACH.

  • Using your hands, massage the hammock as well as the end strings until the hammock is clean. After washing, rinse the hammock with clean water. Finally, wring the water from the hammock and hang it in a place to dry. Make sure the hammock spread out thoroughly to dry.

Machine Washing

  • Bring both end loops together by folding the hammock in half. Tie the end strings together with a piece of string just below the loops and 3/4 of the way towards the bed of the hammock. This will prevent the strings from getting tangled from the agitation and spinning in a washing machine. Once the end strings are tied place the hammock in a pillow case and tie the pillow case closed. Use mild detergent with your wash cycle and use cold water for your rinse and spin cycle.
  • DO NOT USE BLEACH.
  • After the rinse cycle, carefully remove the hammock from the pillow case and untie the strings. Hang up your hammock to dry, and make sure the hammock spread out thoroughly to dry
  • DO NOT machine wash a hammock with a spreader bar.

Where to Hang Your Hammock

  • You will need to find two fixed points from which to hang your hammock. Try trees, beams, or posts on your veranda. Never hang your hammock from a free-standing brick wall. A Brazilian Hammock will hang in any space of 3 meters or greater (2.7 m for a single) this should leave the center of the hammock about 20-30cm off the ground when you sit in it. (see Fig. 1)
  • Often the distance will be greater and you will need some rope. It is important to attach one or both ends to a higher point to give the hammock some shape, roughly 90cm higher for each extra meter of span (see Fig. 2).
  • Stretching the hammock flat like Fig. 3 is not comfortable and may cause it to break.
  • The easiest way to determine where to hang your hammock is by holding the hammock in place before you attach any fixings.

How to Hang Your Hammock

Trees

  • Wrap the strap around the tree, pass the end of the strap through the metal ring, then rotate it one or two turns and pull it tightly. Pass the end of the strap through the eye of the hammock. Attach the carabiner to the end of the strap.
  • Hook the carabiner onto the metal ring- (see Fig. 4)

Posts and Beams

  • You can fix a large screw eye into a post or beam. The screw eye can be attached directly to your hammock with a Shook (Fig. 5) or using a length of rope.
  • Never attach to brick or concrete pillars unless you are certain they are safe.

Masonry Walls

  • For sturdy masonry walls (not free-standing ones like garden walls nor single brick), use a 10mm bolt (Fig. 6) with a large washer at the end from which you can attach a rope.
